I fully support this endeavor as well.

Countless times Frontier has been asked to do something with the massive amount of Information the Clients and Server Databases already hold.
And countless times it's been met with "no need", "[no response]" or irrelevant tangents like "we don't want to single anyone out" based on complete non-factors and pseudo-arguments.

Brilliant suggestions have been made in the past, concerning that wealth of Information.
And deafening silence was the response to most of it.

If those 3rd Party Tools (incl. Forums, Databasing, Crowdsourcing, Information exchange/collection etc.) didn't exist, we'd still be entirely stuck deep in the middle ages of Information... all while supposedly operating FTL-capable Space Ships in 3303 a.d.

While I don't expect Frontier to immediately react (fully acknowledging their limited Dev Resources and planned deadlines), would be nice if they'd finally "get it" and realize what easy, yet brilliant things one could do with that wealth of Information.
All while having just-about zero downsides at all. Doesn't get better than this really, although arguably it's dirt easy anyway to improve things from where ELITE currently stands in terms of Information handling ;)

Looking back on this thread so far since it began its obvious that the huge majority of players agree with the 3rd party developers and the reasons they are taking action. A smaller minority do not support it...who knows why, but I leave that to them. Its clear that the community vote is in favour. FD should take note as with a dwindling community their game dies eventually. Its happened before, but Devs usually have their heads up somewhere dark and warm and stinky thinking they are above everything. Pitty.

To Frontier

As a former PC developer I understand the rigors on maintaining so much code. However the solution both you and these 3rd party developers needs are simple. A team of 4 people, they develop and maintain a API you give all the 3rd party developers access to.

This should contain a list of all active game ports, both space stations and planetary bases as well as those bases status as you have decided UA bombing is to be a thing for trolls in game to do. The Current Market Prices for Commodities, Real Time Power Play status of all systems, As well as current game ships, and modules and where in real time they can be purchased as once again you have deemed it necessary that modules will sometimes not appear in the stations they have been found at in the past.

Now I understand this sounds on its face like a large undertaking for a 4 person team. However much of this data already exists in the server side game files. Generating a API which can pull that data correlate it and distribute it to the 3rd party developer community should be a quite easy task given experienced coders are placed on the API project.

This team should work with the main developer team on a regular basis, and as requested in the top post, the API should be Beta Tested as well with each new version. This way the 3rd party developers can assist in identifying bugs and help for smooth "Go Live" versions after beta is over.

I don't know if anyone will read this but I thank you for your time and wish you a pleasant day.

A great loss

I've just connected to the game and saw that the third party tools are closed.
Without them, the game loose half of his interest.
Imagine, the economy and time of dev this community apports to Elite.
They just merit some consideration because they are part of the succes and of the future of the game.
Thx

You're joking right?!
Sorry, but no, just because you might not be satisfied with the answer, doesn't mean they are doing it wrong, there are many things that we could wish differently, but all depending on what plans are and such, even with your example, it really wouldn't do much, then if they went over time, people would just complain about that, or say it was 'excuses', as seen so many other places.

Frontier's approach is fairly solid, they do not state anything before they are sure of it, I prefer that to stating 'something' and then not keeping up with it.

Look at other games, again, i'm not saying frontier is perfect or anything, but maybe just maybe, we players are acting entitled in many situations, where the best thing we could do, state opinion calmly, ask a question, sit down, play and enjoy the game, or any game, and simply wait until there is a response to that question, everyone demanding their answer replied to, or answered in a specific way, 'now' quickly becomes a roar with as many players as there are, it simply isn't possible for a smallish team like frontier has, to stay on top of everything the community wants, and even then, they are at least in my eyes, listening, doing their best and doing a heck of a lot better then many other games.

So maybe if we in turn, just...tried to organise our questions and such a bit more, rather then as a whole shout them out everywhere, it might be easier for them to catch them?

Personally I think a 'question' system, where people can up/downvote a question accordingly, see all questions asked, it has been used before for live streams, but this time instead, give it categories, let people ask questions related, let people vote, that way let frontier significantly easier see what questions the community has.

Several thoughts occur: third party sites are pretty fun and helpful; I wish Fdev actually found a way to include many/most of these "3rd party" databases into their core game as I'd take their inclusion over multi-crew or ship launched fighters any day; I'll get by just fine without them in the event they don't come back. The only one I ever use anyway is the Inara page for engineers.

Good luck third party devs:)

If you have read the OP you will have seen that they have tried to communicate with Frontier with no joy.

While I think you have every reason to voice your opinion, your post itself seems to come across as hostile and maybe it's just me but it also came across as a personal attack on the OP with name calling...

You should report him to a mod and maybe add him to your ignore list ;)

Trusted with the responsiblity?

They created these tools! The tools are their children!

You're being ridiculous, they're perfectly within their right to pull down their websites.

Please explain how this is BLACKMAIL?

you're a dev. You create a tool, people start using your tool. then when a lot of peeps are using your tool you withdraw it from them and you set demands.

maybe its not literally blackmail, but it smells of powerplay.

It's been a while since I've logged in to these forums, but I'll throw in my support. I certainly don't want to lose my 3d party tools. I've also considered writing my own scripts to help play ED, but since I don't have a whole lot of development experience, a better API would be appreciated.

Please elaborate, how are the tools 'half' the interest?
