#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

I 100% agree with you. While I understand and sympathise with 3rd party developers, I also know that Fdev have a lot on their plates already. All these 3rd party tools are amazing and I use them on a daily basis but Fdev are under no obligation to devote resources to supporting them. I also hope that the outcome is positive for everyone.

Without these tools, my activity in the game will most likely be affected. I'll find out this weekend to what extent the lack of these tools impacts my ability to complete goals. Being on XBone, I'm mostly affected by the tools that don't integrate with the game's files - EDDB, Inara, and Coriolis specifically.

To the 3rd party devs, thank you for your time and efforts. I think your tools are great and are what have kept me playing. Without them, the effort to locate things in-game (ships, modules, materials, stations, engineers), might take so much of my free time, there would be no time left to play.

I've always argued for a good third party interface into the game. But the priority seems to be on pizzazz, flash, and all that jazz.

I think Frontier does have an obligation to state whether they encourage/support third party addins. If so, then give the devs what they ask. If not, then devs will just have to make do.

But the ambiguity from Frontier is not helpful.

I disagree.

I still support 3rd party, but I disagree with your statement, the only main difference is that in game tools require you to search and find on your own, something that aligned with my expectations, if I want to find something, I have to search for it.
However clearly many see 'search for it' as 'get told where it is', which yeah, is a mentality within gaming culture.

You are generalizing. Not all tools can be found in game. The entire galactic mapping project, for example. Which, as you may remember from recent newsletter, FDev values.

you're a dev. You create a tool, people start using your tool. then when a lot of peeps are using your tool you withdraw it from them and you set demands.

maybe its not literally blackmail, but it smells of powerplay.

If you want to debate, you better git gud

Look guys, I don't understand why we don't have the 3rd party tools implemented into the game in the first place. They are a huge part of the game and help immensely. People who are "hardcore" and only support the state of the game offering more and more broken content are the worst and don't even see how their actions might kill the game completely if this goes on. What the game needs is exactly what those 3rd party tools offer, lots AND LOTS of people wouldn't even be playing this game without the existence of Inara, me included.

Please Frontier, I know you have your roadmap and are willing to do everything to complete the delivery of content on time. You have shown us that you indeed can and will listen to the games community. What the game needs right now is not more and more content which is bugged and rushed and dries out pretty quickly...we need exactly what those 3rd party tools offer us, why else would they be so immensely popular? I'm not the one who likes bashing the developers, they are a great bunch and I love them ^^ But please, focus on fleshing out your game by including those 3rd party tools right into the game. I know you can do it. Withdrawing the data on game mechanics from players isn't the way to go.

With kind regards,
CMDR Cheapmilk :)

I'm a multi billionaire who's only ever used Inara for working with engineers; the game can be played without thirdparty tools just fine, even though they do enhance the experience for many.

Haven't used most of these as i wasn't aware that they existed, I have however spent a lot of time using E:D Shipyard (experimenting with ship configurations and the like) and i would be / am lost without EDDB. So some support from FDEVs would be greatly appreciated, that being said its not something we can really expect from them. Look forward to seeing what comes of this.

I personally wouldn't have put more than 15-20 hours into this game witbout eddb, and I'm currently at 850. The first time I wanted a module and couldn't get it from the station I was at, or any station within a jump or two without scouring every g one of them for a 100ly radius would have been the end for me. I have better things to do with my time. If the developers don't want to include this option in-game, and there are those willing to do it for them outside the game, this seems like a win for everyone to me.

It's not really that hard to find modules, just look for a high tech with a large population, chances are you are likely to find what you need quickly.

If though you can provide a compelling reason why people should work for free

That's the nature of developing third-party mods. The company/entity/community/product you're making them for are not obligated to give you anything in return. That's like doing 3 years of charity work and then complaining that you weren't thanked enough.

If you're developing third-party mods and you use "but I'm working for free" as an argument for not getting your own way then there's something wrong - you are not entitled to anything by default.

Inara and EDDB are super tools I use regularly.

It's a shame when communication breaks down, however I fully support this action. Especially as I'm about to work my backside off for the next three days, so won't be playing much. hah. Power!

Mapping project is not really the same thing though, i'm referring to trading, modules, whatnot, anything you want to find in the game.

Mapping, writing down what is where, is generally not something you could do ingame because 'how' you'd want it done really depends on the people part of it.

I'm not angry. I don't actually care. Apart from EDCD, which is working properly. I doubt FD can add anything to that brilliant site.

Frankly anyone who can't play without these tools needs to GIT GUD. The game is playable. And I'm sure that jumping from system to system to find that thruster upgrade was intended gameplay.

But could someone PLEASE, enlighten plebs like me what "support" actually means?

As already said, this could not come at a worse time. Though I think it is obvious that's deliberate.

Honestly? I think these 3PD's are being incredibly selfish. I'd rather they just delete the tools altogether. Because simply making them offline feels like blackmail. Even if that isn't their intention, I imagine a lot of non-forum-going players feel cheated.

I get it. These tools aren't free to make and publish. However if the 3PD's can't handle the demand their brilliant creations generate? They shouldn't have published them in the first place.

I've taken my site (Thrudd's Elite Dangerous Tools elitetradingtool.co.uk) down in support as well.

The lack of 3rd party support over the years has been really disappointing. When I put my site up in ALPHA there was talk of an API and we still haven't got it. Instead we got a journal that didn't include the data I needed and now with the companion API no longer officially supported we're in a pretty bad place.
I've put 1000's of hours in to working on my site for the good of the community but am seriously considering just taking the site down as I don't feel there's any future in it.
For the last 6 months or so I can't even use it myself due to a API bug meaning I don't get any data from the companion API any more.

The new journal gave me nothing to work with regarding trade data or even simple things like station distance from jump in so I cant even convert my site to use that.

perhaps there is something wrong with either the game or the way people play it? If the developers of the game feel that third-party tools add value to the game by allowing them to focus on developing other things instead of duplicating those tools, then they should seek to maintain a better relationship with third-party developers who are effectively working for them for free. Or if the developers feel that the tools are not the intended way to play the game, then it should be up to the community to either accept that view and stop using the tools, or convince the developers otherwise.

I fell this is very close to the truth. The problem is, as we have seen in many other aspects of the game, that other games have set a precedent on how players feel they should be able to do whatever they want to "make the game better" EvE, WOW, Skyrim, Fallout (now granted with Bethseda they actively under develop some parts of their games knowing that modders will take it up) and people feel that Elite should be like all the other games and have no care that it is trying to do things differently. Elite isn't about Cr/h or min/maxing, despite how often people try to imply that it is.
