Tuff one, at the end ofthe day these sites are a labour of love by the authors, clearly valued by some or many in the community.
On the other hand, other than the journal API, the other APIs are FDs to break whenever they want. The journal API is a little different as the specification for it is published.

Fortunately I do not rely on the sites, so it is not the end of the world for me, occassionaly use eddb to find out what other systems a faction is in, but that is, model ships on coriollis, and lookup recipes for engineers on inara, but that is about it.

Without the valuable resources of Coriolis EDCD Edition, Elite: Dangerous Database (EDDB), and INARA, Elite Dangerous feels like a primitive game, and players lack basic knowledge that should be at their fingertips. Yet these tools also let you delve deeper into the game through customization that even experienced players can enjoy and still find useful to this day.

The developers of these third-party tools for Elite: Dangerous have done outstanding work, and deserve the highest commendation. Thank you for donating your time and effort to make Elite: Dangerous better. I support your strike.

I also believe these websites along with EDC in Facebook play a significant role to improve the Elite Dangerous community and game. I use them on a weekly basis.

I don't think the hostage/terrorist analogy that people keep digging up applies to this. First you don't resolve hostage situations by wagging your finger at the miscreant saying "Now, now this is the wrong way to go about this because then everyone else will do it. Go away and find a less destructive way to make your point". You try to avoid creating circumstances that cause things to come to a head like this in the first place.

If you want to drag a real life analogy into it then the "exasperated spouse finally walks out on unsatisfying marriage" one seems more appropriate.

To me, I would say the game would become unplayable for new players and all the current players would scarsely try soemthing new

Again, take a deep breath, and reread this. This is not a battle and it is not a game where you can win or lose... This is a conflict, and if we do not settle it by discussing it, we take another approach, like a strike. That way, we make a statement and after that we discuss it again and hopefully, the others side will be more coöperative.

You have seen to many movies or you are overreacting: this is just a conflict and has nothing to do with blackmail, terrorists or things of that nature; please do not make this bigger than it is... You're escalating this out of proportions

Absoloutely right on the latter part. They are welcome to make their sites paid for if they want, or shut down their sites, or lock them to just their friends only.

They do it all free of charge, without contracts they can do as they like (as long as it doesn't break and FD TOS).

But they are holding FD to ransom here. They are saying "Give us what we want, or else". Ok, technically speaking ransom usually means demands for money and that's not what is going on here. Extortion fits better, but that's a really nasty word and I don't want to use it to describe what the guys are doing, but it is technically correct.

Big user (and proponent) of INARA. Also use ED-TD, EDDB, Coriolis, Roguey and ED Board on a regular basis. It would be great for them to be lent some official support (or adopted) by FD to keep them up to date and relevant.

The game experience is enhanced through these sites, not least because they provide interaction with the elite universe away from my Xbox, something which is not possible with official FD supported tools (no app).

Would welcome / actively support the development of an official app that incorporates these 3rd party tools or alternative official collaboration.

You can't deny that this was deliberately timed to cause as much damage to this event as possible. Like Airport workers striking just as the holiday season is about to start. Obviously not the trade tools would be used but EDDB and the Galaxy map tools would have made it a lot easier to co-ordinate people within the event.

The demands aren't that outrageous, but I think they would have had more support if they hadn't timed it during the 29th Event and when 2.3 was stable.

Wouldn't that entail a formal agreement between the two parties? Which I don't _think_ is the case here.

Dear 3rd party tool developers

Your tools are practically essential to enjoy ED.

They fill a gaping hole in elite dangerous. All of the info your sites provide should be available in game. But since FD has neglected to do so , your sites are now basically an essential part of the game.

I fully support you and your shutdown.

In fact, until you actually get cooperation from FD (good luck with that)....you should collectively shut your sites down for at least 5 days every month

Let FD see just how much the community depends on your external tools. But more importantly, let FD see how upset the community gets when your tools arent available.

3rd party support

I use 3rd party tools on a daily basis, calculate closest stations that sell what I'm looking for, best trade data, ship/ outfitting discounts and locations, best outfitting guides for what I feel like doing on that given day, as I rarely stay doing the same thing in the same system for long. The tools make that possible and get me exploring the beauty of the game I otherwise wouldnt. While they are offline I will attempt to get around to finally doing naval missions that I've blown off for far to long. Love and luck 3rd party's
