#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

I might create my own tools so I don't have to rely on these 3rd party developers. :)

Actually the only tool I find really useful is the Shipyard tool.

Mixed feelings.

Heavy user of EDDB & EDSM, not so much sites like Coriolis (although I have used them to ponder what my new ship will look like). There is simply nothing like EDSM. even if you discount the trilation aspect, for tracking and sharing fleet/travels. EDDB is clearly optional, but the traders and those searching for stations who aren't religiously RP then, again, there's no substitute.

Timing strikes as opportunistic. Guess that in real life the train drivers don't strike when no-one would notice, but as a set of sites specifically created to enrich the experience of us the player, removing them this weekend is a bit off TBH.

Frontier - please put together a statement of intent with some cast-iron guarantees to engage with the developer community within a fixed timeframe.

Developers - once you have this, get these sites back up before the weekend.

I've probably spent almost as many hours using some of your 3rd party tools as I have playing ED (sad, I know). Anyway, thank you guys and gals for all that you do. You have my full support in your petition.

I was at the ED launch event in Duxford in 2014, and around 22:30 I think there was a Q&A session which had a few people asking about access to APIs for their tools.

Frontier (via Michael Brookes I believe at the time) said it was too much for them to support on-going access to any APIs Frontier might make available, which due to updates would likely change often enough to potentially breaking 3rd party tools.

So I suspect that it still their position, in that they cannot afford the resources to support it, as opposed to actually making something fit for purpose available. It is a shame however, as clearly we'd all benefit if they changed their minds.

For those who play the game on 'hard mode' without 3rd party tools, I applaud you.

But for the rest of us schmucks who do depend on 3rd party tools to make the game a tad less frustrating and/or more enjoyable, FDEV's neglect of the 3rd party community is disappointing, at best.

FWIW, I agree with the assertion that 3rd party tools are 50% of the game.

I stand with the developers.

Dear 3rd party developers.

I don't care about your tools, don't use them,

Dear Knowles 2

Thanks for leading with the part where your opinion doesn't matter at all. It's very kind of you to let us all know that your opinions are useless garbage and nobody should bother reading your dumb words up front, instead of making people slog through completely irrelevant information.

Cheers,
Paramemetic

Just a question to all those supporting this action. Where exactly would you like this to sit in the priority. You know all the complaining that's been done about the development of Elite recently, you now all suddenly want that to be put on the back burner so that resources can be diverted to talking to some 3rd party developers? I would be interested to hear from the said developers (especially the OP) to see how high a priority they think this should take, over the development of the game?

If the site's uneeded why are you complaining about it?

If you don't play the game, then why are you still here?

Putting in my nod of support.

I remember using Thrudd's site as soon as it went up and was using EliteOCR to help get the data in there. Was an avid user of Slopey's tool for as long as he supported it. Been using EDMC, religiously, and tap EDDB whenever I'm having trouble with the in-game tools or want to build an epic trade run.

These tools and their development are ESSENTIAL to the vibrancy and longevity of this community and Frontier needs to not only recognize it but actively put resources into supporting it.

Also, the rebooted coriolis site is my guilty pleasure when I'm at work...I've built hundreds of ships there, just for the heck of it.

Out of concern for the wider game. I may not need it.

But apparently, lots of players do. And the game needs those players to keep going.

it's not sabotage/ransom/extortion if the tools are not considered important. If they are considered important (either by Frontier or by the community), i.e., adding value to the game, then it's time for Frontier to wake up and realise they need to give something in return for 3rd party developers' time and effort.

Ah, so, you are saying it is sabotage/ransom/extortion! But its ok, because FD need to wake up?

Well, that's balls up my ED session I had planned for tomorrow.

Come on Frontier, please make this situation right again, so normal play can resume.

Elite Dangerous is very much a community game, & this does include the third party tool developers.

You really should give it a whirl without tools.

You analogy totally does not match the situation. FD never asked for any help and since the 3rd party devs can't work directly on ED, you can't dig rocks out of their garden.

Let me try.

There is a company who are making a game. The game is lacking some features that some people would like to see in that game. Some people decide to make those features available out of game, and the devs do actually provide a way for those people to get access to certain bits of information from in game, which is rather nice. The devs didn't really make any promises about making things easier or better for the other people, although they talked about it from time to time. They said they would like to... maybe... soon... possibly. But it never really happened. Still, the other people still had their third party stuff and stuff worked. But those people still wanted more help from the devs, and they asked and asked and asked, but never got what they wanted. So, in the end, they pulled down their sites in protest, hoping that it would convince the developers to do what they wanted, knowing full well it would cause an uproar in the community, that pressure from the community would get the developers to do what they wanted.

Well... that's part 1 over. Let's see how part 2 goes eh?

But seems to fit with "Do as we say, or else"... you decide which dictionary word best fits that description.

Unless my little analogy doesn't quite fit in some way.
All they're saying is 'help us to help you'.
Or let's have some reciprocity.

Cmon FDev, sometimes you should consider the amazing effort that other people are making towards your game. I see lots of stuff about "in game groups" come up regularly on your newsletter (rescues, racing, exploring), yet almost nothing about the immense work that others do outside of game play that many of us could not do without at this stage because of the invaluable resources that they provide, without which would almost seriously reduce the play-ability of your game. So please support these guys and give them the credit they deserve and the time (and resources) that they use to make it a better game. Time/Resources/Credit.... any of those words sound familiar? Yes they are all part of your game!

Hi everyone. Just letting you know we've seen the thread. Please be patient while we bring this to the attention of the developers.

Just quickly want to mention that we always try to communicate as openly and effectively with our community as possible, and we appreciate all the hard work that goes in to the maintenance of these useful sites and tools.

I have also sent a PM to the OP, too :)

Thanks for your patience everyone!

A more generic "we're sorry" could not possibly have been written. Oil -> Fire

FDev please support the EDCD in a proper way, it's for your own good. Most ingame 'tools' are very basic and awkward, to put it mildly. In some cases, they don't even exist at all, and you seem to kick those guys in the teeth that try to make a difference with the game you created.

So SAD! :x
