#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

Thread Closed: Not open for further replies.
You're supposed to inconvenience the people you're against, not the ones you seem to think are going to support you.

1. Sites go down
2. People go crazy on the forums
3. More drama over last 2 weeks than last 2 years combined
4. FDev feels inconvenience as even the last four white knights have problems defending them

I'd say that this is working great so far, all we're missing at this point is Braben coming here and saying "maybe, it's on the list, soon, nothing to announce yet", while 20 new tattoo packs release on the store

What do you think brings a player the most excitement? Finding a 3k cr/ton route, or actually running that route for the Nth time? And considering how much Frontier likes to obfuscate information and how simplistic the gameplay loops are, what do you think they believe is the most important aspect of their game?

And remember this is very much a zero-sum game, so I'm certainly not going to start asking Frontier to divert their obviously limited resources towards more API support when so many mechanics are hopelessly shallow, when there is so much content missing or making no sense at all. How come so many people complain that we didn't need Powerplay or CQC, but apparently we need 3rd party tools? No, in the current state of the game, we don't. At least no 3rd party tool that requires more than we already have really.

Finding a 3k/hr route isn't exciting. It may be to you, but I dunno why that is - you found it by using pot luck? That's not very engaging gameplay and most people find trading boring.

As for FDev's "limited resources" they have 300 staff so no, they don't have limited resources, they're just not choosing to allocate them to ED most likely. Who knows but the snails pace of development would indicate there's not many people working on it.

If:
You have an avatar,
or a graphical pilots licence signature,
or are a member of any faction or player group,
or chat with other players on discord or teamspeak,
or do anything other than sit in a closet with your game,
you use third party dev. tools.

These entities have been giving us these essential aspects for free, hmm...since FD is used to being paid for things and work they ought to be doing themselves or at least offered freely (paid beta -just eww) maybe they are
just sitting back and thinking...how dare they ride our skirts offering all this without paying us!

Yet another ball dropped on the 1 yard line FD?

I support 3rd party apps

Frontier, don't be jackasses and support 3rd party development. I am paying player and I think the 3rd party apps greatly improve the experience of your game.

If you don't use those sites, what is stopping you from just playing the game then?

I do play the game and I am playing the game. I have used those sites in the past. While somewhat useful, I dont seem them as being integral to the game itself.
I never said I stopped playing so you may have me confused with another poster.

If I do ever feel the need to make a tool for the game, the last thing I would ever do is share it.

If you carefully read OP's post, this is a last ditch effort after 3 years of unannounced API changes, no documentation, no communication, being ignored, etc.etc.
It seems to me FDev is behaving like unprofessionals in this case; launching an API, then not documenting it, then change it unannounced, while saying

which is clearly not the case!
After 3 years of this, losing patience and going on strike is a fair option :D

#support3rdparty!

No!

A last ditch effort at what, trying to change FD's stance? Once again FD have always said they have no intention of creating and supporting a full API. They did not originally like the idea of an API at all because of the level of support it would require from them.

So what happened?

People created 3rd party apps anyway, sometimes even when they had expressly been told to stop development, and now because FD's stance has not changed they are encouraging people to show their dissent to FD to demonstrate how much leverage they believe they have over FD.

I helped Thrudd out a reasonable amount during Beta and after the game had been released. I occasionally use EDDiscovey for old FGE times. I, however, do not agree at all with this. Yes I can imagine they're frustrated that things have not changed, but to be fair, I'm not sure why any of them expected anything else. And using the community as leverage to try and change that does not sit well with me.

I am also still waiting for anyone to answer this.

Just a question to all those supporting this action. Where exactly would you like this to sit in the priority. You know all the complaining that's been done about the development of Elite recently, you now all suddenly want that to be put on the back burner so that resources can be diverted to talking to some 3rd party developers? I would be interested to hear from the said developers (especially the OP) to see how high a priority they think this should take, over the development of the game?

I think that if you have ever contributed to any of these third party sites financially you would be quite within your rights to demand your money back. It is their choice to deny you a service that you have paid for , perhaps an issue of contract ? Just a thought ;)

Thanks to the thread, I updated my ignore list and now the forum is less toxic. Surprisingly the supporters of FD behavior are most toxic participants in this forum…

The removal of these tools at any time would be inconvenient enough. Doing it with no notice, no prior demands and over a weekend where Frontier have an event planned is cynical, and is not endearing. While a lot of the community *will* be on-side with this action, it could have been done with more tact if the OP had been exactly the same, but instead of an immediate take-down, giving Frontier a week or so to respond. There is bound to be negativity to this action simply because of the way it was done.
Quoted For Truth.

The way I see it, if the strikers actually wanted to see their stated intents and suggestions met, then this was done poorly. By using sabotage tactics intended to deliver maximum harm right away, with no prior warning nor notice given, they have considerably hurt their chances of FDev meeting them. Plus now their only way of escalating things further if they want is to permanently take their sites offline.

If you don't use the 3rd party tools, why would you care anything about this?

If you think this is "child like" behavior (on a holiday weekend), then that sounds like you're a little miffed at losing this "extra" functionality.

If you are miffed at these tools going offline, then its likely cause you're using them.

If you are using them, you might consider that cooperation from the Devs might be beneficial.

All this talk about PITA'S is making me hungry

First I would like to thank all of the third party sites for their help and dedication. I do see where yall are coming from though and it must be utterly frustrating. Secondly ED give these guys/gals a hand with the API. They are helping the whole community out and not asking for a dime from yall. Third I hate this dad gum "i'm not a robot" verification system. Most of the "mountains" are hills and plateaus thereby making this verification system crap.

It's both hilarious and tragic that these guys, who are such hardcore fans of the game that they've spent untold hours of their lives and a great amount of effort creating tools to cover the basic feature gaps Frontier has left, have had to take drastic action to try and provoke just some kind of rational response from Frontier.

Meanwhile half the occupants of these forums call them 'entitled' or something. Yeah, because providing a free service to tens of thousands of players is 'entitled'??

...

"...only way to make Frontier clearly understand the huge disconnect"... Love the wording! Good for you guys!

Fully behind you! :D

ONLY 20!!!??!!! I DEMANDE NEW HAIRCUTS!

I agree with that Monk, I really do but this is attention grabbing, throwing the baby out with the bath water arrogant and disruptive as possible nonsense.

True, but look at all the response it as garnered. Is there a more appropriate approach that would have been as effective?
