#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

Thread Closed: Not open for further replies.
After speaking in private with the OP and other involved community developers, we have all agreed that it was best for the community to bring the websites back up as soon possible. This will be happening simultaneously at 19:00 UTC (where possible) for all the sites.

We have made a commitment to work more closely with the third party developer community to address concerns and support these features which the community use and value on a daily basis.

These ongoing communications will include developers from other third party websites who may be interested, not just those listed in the OP. If you are an active and established third party Elite Dangerous developer, get in touch with community@frontier.co.uk

We all hope that clears things up!

Thanks everyone,

Ed

You're too nice. I would have pulled the APIs and blocked their numbers

Thank you, ED. I think these 3rd party sites really do provide major game enrichment to Elite.

Now about that in-game web browser ... :p

That's a nice response Ed, but seriously you might as well just pull the API. It will never be good enough for them. How long before we're back here again? Or have they also made a commitment to respect the views and stance of FD and not take it to the forums again?

Seconded.

Everyone who didn't get their way today should go ahead and make a separate thread insulting the perceived generation/age group at fault and an insulting list of which games they should be playing instead.
Also don't forget to be smug about it as possible.

Instigator - non-productive input - abort loop

We worked closely with them to come to a decision together that benefits everyone... most importantly, it benefits the community and Elite Dangerous. Getting those sites back up was important to us, but also making sure the community developers trust that we want to help. We don't see it as extortion, but we made it very clear that we thought it could have been handled differently.

The important thing is that lines of communication have been opened up.

I'm not a big user of 3rd party stuff myself, besides Coriolis. That said, I've played with enough folks to realize how important some of these sites are, such as INARA when it comes to community events and the like. I'm glad Frontier and the 3rd Party Devs have been able to reach an agreement that benefits not just the game, but the community as well. Bottom line is, we're all in this together. Anything that makes the game more enjoyable (whether you use it or not), is a plus in my opinion, and deserves some respect.

There's a high degree of passion for Elite Dangerous, as evidenced within this thread. That's a good thing, even if it puts people at odds at times.

(As an answer to Jpfan01 )
Well, you do get to play with all the tools FDEV thinks you need to have a good time, now that the 3rd party sites are offline for you.

Well, the game actively pushes for 3rd party sites with features like private groups and having player groups become/adopt minor factions. Given how much Frontier pushes for 3rd party sites to exist, I would hope that they take into consideration the challenges that arise from their updates. 3rd party developers are essentially supporting the game for free.... at least you can make it as easy as possible for folks to do so.

Could you perhaps let ED and the 3rd party folks figure out for themselves what will or will not be good enough? They have come to an agreement to discuss this in a constructive manner. Perhaps you could follow suit instead of trying to light a fire?

I have been here and watched the other times things were figured out, wait long enough until things stop moving as fast as some people want them to and we'll be back here again. I'm not trying to light any fires, the OP did that perfectly, apart from anything else it's raining here.

Hey mate! Honestly... we had a really good chat, it lasted nearly five hours! They're well aware of how we feel about the initial post... I think we both learned valuable lessons today. We should try to be positive... hey those websites are back up now!

Are you going to be working on making some of those tools first-party game features to make sure this doesn't happen again? Because I sincerely hope the only action to come of this isn't just go back to relying on the same sites with demonstrably hostile developers and just throwing them some early patch notes every now and then. You gotta remember most of us don't want to use these things, but there's simply been no alternative for such a long time that many have gotten far too used to their existence, to the point of being able to overlook their absence in the game itself. I don't want to go back to the old status quo, and I hope this little event will be the wakeup call you guys need to act on it, and not in the way the OP is demanding either.

its always made my mind boggle that a game like ED in this day and age has such shocking in game tools or there the lack off.

Had my support I use most of the 3rd party tools, playing the game without EDDB is just a no go for me among others, here's hoping they get the help they need to keep on providing a top class product.

Thanks for this comment Ed.
