CQC Have FD given up on CQC?

The more I play CQC, the more obvious it is that FD have only themselves to blame for its lack of success. The match maker simply does not work. It is clear that even when I know there are other people waiting for a game, I am still sitting watching the spinning roulette hexagon of searching. No lobby starts, no nothing. This improved with 2.1 but reverted in 2.2. I can be chatting with several players on discord who are all waiting for a game that doesn't start. When a game does start there are usually a few new people around. How many players just gave up while waiting? FD presumably have stats on how many people play but I suspect if the match maker can't even match people who want to play then their stats may not be be accurate.

Often, when a game ends, you find yourself in a broken lobby. It has enough players for another game but insists that it needs even more. Sometimes there are nine people in a lobby which is one more than the maximum per game of eight and yet it still tells you it needs more players. During this time, you'll see new players come in, wait and then leave. The experienced players know you need to all leave the lobby and then come back. Leaving even one player in there keeps the lobby in its broken state. There is no way to explain this to the new players whose first impression is that the game doesn't have enough players.

For 2.3, FD have balanced the distributor on the Imperial Imp and performed some network changes. Personally I think this balance will not be a positive for the game but even if it is, I think everyone would have preferred the time spent on the match maker and lobby instead.

The perception that CQC is dead is not true but that the match maker is dead is. There's the problem right there.

Ever since i got the game I was never able to get in a match. Not happy.

At the time you made this post, there were several people playing CQC/Arena Death Match games. Drop in on the discord channel (link in my sig) and you can see if people are playing or ask people to come and join a game.

Make it work with NPC pilots and it will be a winner.

This would certainly help as you would be guaranteed of a match in a short time. I think they should start with putting NPC pilots in there to fill the gaps and restart development on it when they can see more players are coming back to it.

Didn't FD address this with multi crew where they basically said: 'Yeah, if you don't play it, we're not going to improve it or work on it?' That's what they did with CQC and that's what they did with Powerplay.

CQC was nothing more than their attempt to cash in on the COD market. The fact they removed it from sale as a stand alone game should have told everyone they had given up on it.

I'd still love an AI 'dogfight module' in CQC, where I could pick what ships/loadouts I wanted on each side, then pick a side, the just go have some fun, a la TAW, Falcon 4, Bridge Commander etc.

Yeah there's so much that could be worked on. But the content is just as deep as the first Quake. It had so much potential....

It is DEAD! I loaded up Arena in the forelorn hope I could change my status from the crap one I have and after the loading screens had finished the three game options were unclickable.

This tells me Frontier have abandoned the activity.

There's a bug in 2.3 where they can't be clicked with the mouse - joystick and keyboard work fine.

This bug is (finally!) fixed in 2.4

I think we may get updates in the near future. Especially to draw in the console customers for Xbox and now PS4. Fingers crossed. Fly safe

FDev could have easily integrated Arena into the mission system since SLFs were released in 2.2 (I think). Since they have already integrated some of the CQC structure assets in the game, all they would need to do to add a new mission type that offers special rewards for CQC combat, like elimination of X ships or other metrics similar to Massacre missions do.

Ship requirements would mandate a Fighter Bay equipped ship, similar to surface missions require SRVs.

One key reason I hadn't bothered with Arena is that it incurred minimal or no in-game benefits, ranking or influence as far as the main game progress goes. I would go out on a limb here and wager a lot of players felt the same way and simply ignored it.

It would offer a nice variety to expand a much maligned mission system. This seems like a low-hanging fruit that has been there for the taking. It could even be integrated as a chain mission to an Assassination mission, like kill Pirate Leader in CQC combat at XYZ facility within, etc., etc.

I still like my idea of having it as an equivalent of prison following repeat offences, where inmates fight to regain their freedom - which may even involve doing shady backroom deals to throw matches or stuff like that.

Don't mind that at all...

Oh, you don't wan't to be punished for your crimes by being forced into CQC? Well, then... Be good, or good at it.

Z...

Should have launched as FTP, would have had a decent chance in promoting the full game to people that have never considered buying ED.

I said it when it launched and even said this to the devs on a live stream only to be told that CQC was busy & popular...

A missed opportunity.
