#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

A fair point.

Pick a time when the dev's are busy sorting out update issues, and with a well-publicised event in the immediate future, and then make demands which they must know there is no likelihood of anybody being free to respond to in a timely manner.

Real classy. [sour]

See, that's how it works when you need something to get done or changed. Disrupt and bring the spotlight to the issue so it can't be easily ignored by the powers that be.

If their previous efforts haven't fallen on deaf ears this wouldn't have been necessary, hopefully FD will follow thru' so that this doesn't have to happen again in the future.

Looking for landmines, grind, grind, grind, without this site the game would be almost unplayable. Trade routes on galaxy map are a waste of time never find the goods.

'Kind of' .. I don't use them at all (or a pen and paper) and get on just fine in the game.

You've got to enjoy a good revolution now and then though.

Have you gleaned information from the forums here, or Reddit? I'm not suggesting this about you specifically, but it is largely applicable to most people who ask questions or just browse picking up tips and suggestions and stuff...an awful lot of the information passed along while yes, at some point did have to come from the game, but what is passed readily and quickly is not often recalled from memory, or rediscovered over and over in the game...it comes from these third party sites and tools...

114 pages as I write this, so am assuming itll be higher by the time I finish a few lines, so its just fitting give FD their slow clap. That wasnt too hard now was it? A different policy on actual communication with those 3rd party supporters would have prevented that bad day at the office, but thats hinsight for ye...a harsh mistress sometimes.

Now finally theres something else ye guys have in common with eves CCP after they caved over something similar back in the day. Coincidentally, those were communication issues too which goes some way to explaining that old saying about history repeating itself. Food fer thought...? Patterns emerging maybe?

Respect to those who took this action...as fans yerselves, this wouldnt have been an easy decision to make against FD. Probably best to just let things wind down as opposed to discussing something many of us know very little about. It wont stay a discussion fer long knowing this shining example of a community :x

So I just looked at Inara's recently updated engineers page, Inara's engineering page being the only third party tool mentioned in the OP that I use with any regularity, and could not help but notice that the various upgrades included in 2.3 which have been absent from the page are now updated. My understanding of this whole storm in a teacup that blew in today was over sites such as Inara not being able to readily obtain the relevant information to add to their sites. Correct? So the conclusion I'm drawing right now is that Inara purposefully withheld such data from their site in order to help build the case against Fdev and to help stoke the flames of the mob scene which developed this morning.

This site is needed as the trade options on galaxy map are useless. Landmines were indicated exported in a system where they are illegal???? Need this site to actually find commodities.

What the bloody hell's been going on here?!?!

I go away from the internet for a day and when I get back there's a new thread with over seventeen hundred posts on it. So I read the OP, can anyone summarise what the other 1737 posts are about?

This thread just goes to show how dependent FDEV is on a 3rd party developer who isn't on their payroll. How long is FDEV going to exploit this free labor before they fix their own game so these outside tools aren't necessary?

This is proof that FDEV has been using these 3rd party devs as a crutch and now it's finally biting them in the behind.
What was the alternative? Close the APIs, the community will be . Don't say anything, the community would be . So really, what was the alternative?

Well, I'm glad Maggier Thatcher isn't the community manager. Withdrawing labour sometimes is the only thing you feel you have left and it works, as long as the Police aren't used as a tool of the state against you! It takes funbags. WD. Now let's get off our high horses and kill stuff, just like John Lennon said, erm .. did he? Uhm.. well he might have. I dunno.

Happy to be corrected on this one, but...

It's more to do with engineer data not being updated via the API, which doesn't apply to Inara. You used to be able to automatically apply engineer mod stats changes to EDShipyard and Coriolis. This functionality was removed.

I am only putting this to highlight it for you

I take back what I said, they did ask folks to do something - to tell Frontier how important the tools are to them, presumably in the hope that Frontier would actually listen to them.

Looks like it worked.

I hope the ship outfitting one gets fixed, that's actually something that I would use, and is a feature I always felt should be in the game.

Of course, if FDev provided usable official means to this information then the 3pd leverage would be minimal at best...That said, honestly, I do not want to see these things integrated into the game if it means they will not be available from third parties. I like having the choice of sites and apps and being able to pick and choose rather than being locked into something.

Doesn't mean that they weren't holding players base as hostages.

If you see it that way then why describe it as extortion?

They also weren't taking anyone hostage, both literally or figuratively. They aren't bound to develop or maintain these tools forever, despite their significance. They are free people, like you and I. And they can decide for themselves what to do with their own creations that the community voluntarily decides to engage with. Certainly you wouldn't problem if they shut down tomorrow because they've lost interest or simply don't have the time?

It should have been clear in the OP that the problems they have are wearing them a bit thin. And instead of waiting for the day they decide to pull the plug permanent they decide to show us what the pull of the plug looks like temporarily.

It's not like they ever came to the community asking for help?

They are the community. And we can't solve the problems they have any better than they can.

Nope. At the core, I support the out of game developers. I call it extortion because that's how I see their actions, not their demands. I can separate the two. To reiterate: The ends never justify the means.

I'm not saying your wrong for feeling that way. I only take issue with the characterization of the situation. You can have this viewpoint without throwing the word extortion around.

Its not necessary the same jurisdiction across a whole system, whats illegal in space can be legal on a planetary port not owned by the system controlling faction (same for station, but landmines are planetside).

Not that galmap is perfect but I honestly think many people have got no clue how things actually work ^^
