#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

Being a Trader without the 3rd party tools is like being an explorer without the System Map.

Being a trader the 3rd party apps are OK to a limited degree but by no means will they chart the rare profitable routes. That takes in-game analysis. Want a 2.5M two system jump in a 704 cargo Cutter? No problem. Want that elusive 4-6M mill run? These sites do not provide it. While a 3rd party trading app might be faster starting out an experienced trader doesn't need them. Don't believe me...search the Forum threads for advanced trading.

Regards

I want to say Thank You to all the 3rd party devs for all the hard work, donation of their time, and the great and wonderful tools made available to us at no cost. You folks Rock, and are second to none.

Also, a big Thank You to Ed Lewis, and the Frontier Development Team for responding to this very quickly. How you folks are able to endure all the negative comments made by the very loud minority is beyond me. Keep up the good work.

I am glad to see that the parties involved have met and are moving in a positive direction. I hope the best for the support3rdparty groups and Frontier as the players will certainly benefit. But make no mistake, the support3rdparty groups took actions which many will never forgive or forget. They have lost the confidence and worse the respect of many. No argument in response will ever justify their actions in this regard for those who feel used by these events. I hope that the cost was worth the effort. I suggest a much more positive approach in the future enlisting the aid of the players without taking away site access at a crucial moment in the game's progress and events. Doing it in a more positive manner might have received 99 percent support in this thread. Getting one's way by what many consider very inappropriate means is not the best solution.

You're shooting sparrows with a canon.
A handful will waste time being bitter.
Most of the people will enjoy the fact that all went down really well.
And the latter is, of course, the only sensible thing. [yesnod]

It's probably time for this thread to be locked now.

The issues have been raised and the OP and FD have opened lines of communication.

No further good can come of this thread being open anymore.

We will see how they work together in the future as a true test to the validity of the agreed outcome.

Because the 'Ends do not justify the means'. The group just assumed they would get no support so they opted, for the nuclear option. Because they could, and they wanted FD to know it. They used the dependency of the players, against FD. "Give us what we want, or suffer for it".

They showed complete disdain for the people that use their sites, to poke FD in the nose. What they did was no different than the tactics used to create drama, by that group bringing the Heat Mechanics to what they thought was FD attention. In that case the demonstration was derided. Killing noobs to get FD's attention was widely panned. But, because Data makes people happy, the strong arm tactics are accepted. So we applaud one group for strong arming FD, because we need their output, but doing the same by another group puts them in the ranks of griefers. We are a bunch of hypocrites, aren't we?

Oh?
Who are these "the people" they showed "disdain" towards?

I certainly felt no such thing. :)

So they let the terrorists win. [mad]

I am astonished! [yesnod]

Just wanted to pop by and say thank you to all those 3rd party devs out there that makes these great tools! Sad to see it had to come to a post like this to get some traction on your concerns though.

On the topic though, I would LOVE to see a basic browser/control panel window in ED that could integrate these sites more tightly with ED. Would save those tabbing to other screens or using Steam overlays etc and add to the immersion and ease of use.

On the contrary!

Its been a great resource for adding to my IGNORE list. ;)

People jump to their Ignore list pretty easily. I'm guessing these players also spend more time spamming their Block feature ingame than playing. Personally, I disagree with the overwhelming sentiment contained within this thread but would never ignore anyone. For that matter, I've never put a single person ever on my ignore list. #thickskinisgood

Looking at all the salt and vitriol aimed at the 3rd party developers, you almost have to wonder how many of those 'outraged' posters show up at protest rallies throwing rocks and bottles, or trash cars and local businesses when their team loses the soccer match.

Clearly none of them have ever held a union job in their life. LOL

Hipster hypocrisy is hip!

Sorry friend, but the bottle throwing outrage is coming from your side of the mob on this issue. In fact, that has been my biggest problem all along with this thread; all the supporters of the third party dev's who actually became hysterical over...what? A lack of communication? The fact that Fdev didn't bow and scrape to a handful of people who had a passion project? Until they decided to blackmail Fdev that is. I do enjoy these various sites and agree that they enrich the game, but today's activity was embarrassing. Far better ways to handle this situation.

Cannot rep you yet any more than I already have... please accept this post as rep for your spot on comments

Sadly the lesson here is FD should have nipped it in the bud, avoiding all this drama. Reverse engineering their apps was against TOS so banning people doing it outright was the way to go. As soon as any donation buttons appeared on those 'fan sites doing it for free' cease and desist letter would prevent them growing into position from which they could strongarm them using the community (not to mention dropping reddit altogether, the top mod there 'officially' supporting this, wth is unofficial forum supporting officially idk, but they shouldn't count on any amas in the future if they go for drama queening, not to mention they were happy to remove all SDC posts for brigading/vote manipulation, yet here dozen of sites linked to the reddit thread, officially supported lol). At least they know what they can expect and can hopefully plan ahead to avoid this happening again

No, I think we're a bunch of people who don't try to apply some peculiar notion of standardised rules to behaviour and instead analyse each situation on its own merits, including a full appreciation of the circumstances. I was under the impression that was normal.

Just got a mail from someone to tell me Inara was back online... That didn't take long.

Good call on both sides. Glad that they saw eye to eye and I'm looking forward to the further and deeper collaboration that this will bring.

Bravo.

However, I just found this gem that I couldn't ignore:

I am glad to see that the parties involved have met and are moving in a positive direction. I hope the best for the support3rdparty groups and Frontier as the players will certainly benefit. It's like Hyperbole is this guy's second name. Talk about overreaction..

But make no mistake, the support3rdparty groups took actions which many will never forgive or forget.

Did someone plant a bomb on a school bus?

Maybe he should apply to drama college. He'd do well on a stage.
I wonder if he is commensurately active at political rallies. If so he probably goes with bricks and a couple of Molotovs.

Let's take another look at the actions that were actually taken:

On Thursday, several third party sites connected to an indy studio space flight game were taken off line for a day in protest over the developers' apparent lack of communication.

Some people clearly need some perspective.

The profoundly negative (or outright insane - 'terrorist' really?) responses to this apparently justified and well explained decision make me sadder than anything I've ever seen on these forums.

AND THAT IS SAYING A LOT.

Thank you third party devs for your blood and sweat. Thank you FDEV for responding - please keep the promise and not just words.

Except he's right, SDC keeping noob players hostage to force FD to do what they wanted is exactly the same type of behaviour, ends justifying means
