#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

Like someone said I hope biting the hand that fed them is worth it, because if FD decides at some point to bite back I am sure they have big enough teeth

I see its still going.

Hosting is expensive, so you need some mechanism to compensate for it. Some sites have non intrusive ads to help support the hosting fees. Just like the rest of the internet.

A lot of the tools are open source (such as ours) so you can see and build and change the code as you see fit, or use the binaries.

As regards to Donations, for us at EDDiscovery, we have been asked many times by people to allow us to donate to us. But we don't accept any money. We do it because we like playing ED, like coding for it, like interacting with the many people who come to our discord server and giving us help and suggestions. Its a real fun thing to do, its very positive for both us and the ED community.

But that's what you do when you are striking. You tell people what you want, otherwise no action can be taken.

Which could have just as easily been done on their sites close down pages when you tried to access them.. Instead they decided to come here and cause the backlash when they know FD is dealing with the 2.3 issues as well as the 29th event in a clear attempt to whip up the backlash to strongarm FD into kowtowing to them.

And more power to you and kudos, however with millions of views on pages which are only text (they don't serve images/animations/music) the hosting isn't that costly as you claim it to be, the whole clickbait industry would disagree even with images all over like buzzfeeds etc

I personally wish F.D would respond in a classy way, such as by implementing some type of equivelant resource in game, essentially making these guys uneeded.

It not so much biting the hand that feeds you as it is complaining that the hand is not letting you know when it wants to wipe its own .

Maybe Frontier don't want these resources in game and flying to different stations looking for commodities is actually part of the intended gameplay.

You do have a point, but they have a point as well. Ignoring them wasn't a good thing and going on strike without giving FDEV a chance to respond wasn't a good thing either. But in the end they talked to each other, I think this is a good thing. I don't know what this thread about anymore, and maybe it just should get closed, it's over after all.

I suggest many more than a handful got hurt if it makes one feel good but that is another story. There is no rational in life. Kick a dog and many will hate you for it. Murder someone on the Forum that you detest and they will probably show up at your trial as a character witness! We as humans have a long way to go. Kill one person and we can relate. Kill thousands and it is just the nightly news.

Anyway you started this with "reacting like thousands of children were murdered " so let's bet back to the game.

Regards

I suggest not more than a handful got "hurt".
Nobody kicked any dogs, thank God.
Nobody got killed either, thank God.

Somebody made a move that will benefit all those using the 3rd party tools.
And it ended up lasting only a few hours.
It should be a win for everyone. [yesnod]

If they had come to the forums and asked for the support without the threat of shutting down and gotten people behind them FD would have noticed that as well, I and others wouldnt have had a problem with that.. But they know FD is having trouble with 2.3 and are also tying to help Drew have his event so they used this strongarm tactic during the weekend of the event. If I was in charge at FD I would have told them where they could put the tools with pictures if they needed itjust for that tactic and timing

As always there are both sites to it. What some 3rd party tools can do is too powerful IMO and the equivalent of cheating. Finding the best trade routes just by providing your current position is definitely NOT in the spirit of the game. But what about gathering the prices of the stations you already visited? Let's say for 24 hours? Why does it need to be so painfully difficult to compare the commodities of two markets you already know? Also the engineers, why don't we have an in game encyclopædia where you can read some stuff about the different blueprints and materials? Other games like the Witcher do that as well, it wouldn't dumb down the game in my opinion.

I don't see it as a win for anyone except those that will use these type of tactics to get what they want in the future because they see FD will cave to them

Yes, what if another group supplies players with useful services for free for THREE years and even FDev starts to rely on them while at the same time getting the cold shoulder on updates and questions?
Then they might also pull a few-hours-stunt and WE CANT HAVE THAT!

It wouldn't, noone disagrees with that, hell, even module/ship search would be fine most likely with most. Everyone agrees more development is needed in-game, however the whole point of this thread is pushing FD to develop things for out of game tools and prioritising it to avoid another explosion that might lead some emotional people to start review bombing them again on steam, only some want that

Actually, that would be ok if it just recorded (saved) your history so you would still need to fly to different stations to gather the information and allowed you to access that within the game.

Sorry but that just sounds too much like "never negotiate with terrorists" in my opinion and the topic just isn't important enough to justify this comparison. Again, just in my humble opinion ;)

Hosting isn't that expensive. A quick google search found me a site host for $7-11(US) a month, with unlimited storage and bandwidth. Maybe we should all call for the third party sites to open up about their financials (IE revenues from donations and ads, versus their hosting expenses)? They wanted FDev to be more open with them, why not demand that they be more open with the people that use their sites?

BTW, Liqua, I'm still waiting on an explanation about or apology for accusing me of lying because I said I play with one tool on occasion for fun and not in game benefit, and that means I should admit that third party tools are stopgaps for areas that are lacking? I won't deny that there are areas that are lacking, but your response to me made no sense, and was far too hostile and accusatory IMO (plus did a terrible job of actually explaining why I was lying as you put it). BTW, if you don't respond, then I guess it's safe for people to think that you were wrong in your accusation

Yes, when I started playing the game I used pen and paper, then switched to making screenshots of the commodities market and alt tanning all the time to compare prices. And that's something you must do if you don't want to use 3rd party tools or don't have a photographic memory.

PS
After that I stopped trading because it just wasn't any fun that way ;)

Fair enough, though seen enough reddit tantrums where people start posting screenshots of their latest review and advise others to follow suit (the glorious 1k+ hours played, not recommended)
