THE FORMIDINE RIFT MYSTERY (Part 4)

I just had a horrible thought. Salome discovers that while trying to protect the galaxy against murderous thugs, her protectors turn out to be murderous thugs who will kill anyone on sight for no reason.

In frustration and anger, she commits suicide.

Salome is, officially, a murderous thug.
Her private militia are terrorists.

I don't think you need to worry about her getting remorseful about anything.

You forgot to mention that her protectors work on the principle: shoot first, never ask questions

I really think that a lot of independents will just get shot without knowing why. And on top of it, as i mentioned earlier, what if FD decides to drop a few Battlecruisers in, once the VIPs did what they want to do? Serious lack of firepower in that case.

There is no perfect strategy. A wing who wants to kill her can just as easily come unarmed and try to ram her to death [see Orca stats]. I completely get enforcing a defensive bubble. I'd do the same, but asking people to die real easy like instead of encouraging them to have a fun pvp experience just takes this game too far. This strategy will probably turn away more independent pilots who want to see her live or at least have no intent of trying to kill VIPs. That means less instance saturation by independent and friendly pilots and a higher chance of unfriendly instance saturation. It's not just inconsiderate to the experience of independents , it's unconsidered and brash (the defining characteristics of a cowardly response, imagine that!).

I actually, at several points, really wanted to play a part in the story here - as a 1984'er, I was addicted to this game, wrote my own "fan-fiction" in those years, and lived/breathed Elite, so the opportunity to play a part in the development of the story of my first game-addiction was of great appeal...

However... the way it's been done has completely turned me away from participating at all. I figured the 29th would be a good event, something to get people into open, play out Salome's story, and the ending would be written, one way or the other. I went off, bought and A-rated an FDL, figured it would be useful, as the 29th would likely be a sharkfest, one way or the other, in one system or the next.

And where are we now... I joined discord, and discovered the whole thing was a little more than a VIP-only activity. Follow our directives... ICourier or iEagle, no weapons, be the cannon fodder or try to interdict (unless you're a PvP god), while those "in charge", in their clique, dictate to everyone else how to participate. Blaze OUR trail... or die. Turn up in a ship with weapons, and if we don't know you, you die, no questions asked. What if Salome's trail leads you to jump into a system with players who aren't participating in the event? You'll kill them too?

When news of this event came out, I was rooting for Salome's survival, then I figured the story would come out anyway, one way or the other, so her survival is immaterial, really.

Again I warn of what lurks beyond -

"We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.”

Other Cmndrs may not be the threat, do not go unarmed and plan your escape route.
oh and on a cheerier note -

“I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I'll go to it laughing.”

I would hope that they would have ships going ahead with warnings being issued on comms - this system is out of bounds due to an ongoing operation" or suchlike.

They've already said there will be no warnings, no comms.

Folks - you might want to check your in-game multicrew options. Just saying. ;)

Cheers,

Drew.

Suggests... other actors will be present, and open to multicrew? Capital ships?

.... in the systems where the people they want to get through are actually located. They might also have decoy systems operational with comms traffic - even what is discussed on that discord might not be the full plan.

In all of this, it's important to remember that it's the players who are the reason that the event is becoming increasingly unappealing to some of us.
Drew and FDev have done what they can, within the constraints of the game mechanics, to allow us players to influence both the future direction of the game and the novel that goes alongside it.
This is something that hasn't ever been attempted before [citation needed], so I think they deserve credit for taking a risk and making the attempt.
Either the event will go well, and people will have fun, or it won't - either way, FDev will learn something from it and the next event will be (even) better.

I've already thanked Drew and FDev in a previous post, but in addition, I'd like to thank my fellow Rift explorers and theorycrafters.
Remember, FDev had dropped the Rift storyline and I doubt very much that they would have resurrected it if there hadn't been 3 huge, multipage threads showing that there was still player interest in the mystery.
So, success or disaster, exciting or boring, WE made this happen, and we should be proud of that..

Highly probable. It would be foolish to announce tactics on an open channel, lest the attackers formulate a strategy to negate it. Having loads of unarmed ships simply renders those present more or less toothless, irrespective of the genuine strategy.

I think Drew might be referring to the Mining and Exploration roles that I don't think were there before...

EDIT: or perhaps not. Those other options were not showing on my screen until after this post.

Well said Drew!
I am sure Drew will take heart from this!

Appreciated... and apologies if I didn't make the cause of my ire more apparent. I enjoyed Drew's Reclamation, and I will buy Premonition as well, and the next after that.

It is player-caused, and I understand that

@Drew... You have brought life to Elite, and emotion (lots of it, I think!) - and thank you for that. If we didn't care about Elite, about this universe that some of us, you included, have spent decades in, one way or the other, then we wouldn't be as emotional about it as we are. We don't just play Elite. We are Elite.
