Salomé has been killed.

Because this was a community event where we all got to decide how a piece of lore was going to end. Which is amazingly cool. Unless it turns out someone else influenced the story in a way we didnt want. Then we start throwing turds. Its part of the 'not everyone is a hero' thing that is central to ED, SC and many other games. Most people love the fantasy of other people being insignificant (see the 'other people should load my transport ship' debates in SC circles for example), but cannot stand the idea that someone else got the spotlight.

"Influence a story"

"A well known griefer want's to defend a lore based NPC? Oh ok, what could possibly go wrong"
"Whaaaat? He killed her? Who could have ever predicted that??"

I vote Frontier give up with Elite Dangerous, start again, and write a properly working game that can cope with the demands being asked of it. Call it Elite: Deadly perhaps.

That would be amazing. Some actual good mechanics, solid server structure, proper mmo tools and, most of all, a completely new and a refreshed game design team in step with the times.

Will never do one of these again. Big waste of time because of instancing and the event being only for insider groups pretty much.(and killed by an insider obviously).

Does make for an decent storyline though that drew can end his book with a betrayal from her entourage.

And sorry to the defenseless eagle I took it out on before calling it a day. You where the only thing I could masslock in the area. Next time don't listen to these "insider" player groups saying to come unarmed. With a fast ship you can always escape in the worst case.

Sorry, wait just a minute here. I'm a PS4 guy. I'm waiting for the game. Never even played it. You're telling me that Harry Potter said he was going to defend Salome and people believed this? You cannot be serious. Seriously, you cannot be serious. That's the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard.

Surely there was whole posse of people who were dedicated from stopping him getting anywhere near her? I mean it's quite understandable if the people tasked with this failed, because clearly he's very capable. But if you're telling me that he said he was going to defend her and everyone just went along with that I need to look at what I have been drinking today...

Yup, time to look at that drink. o.0
It literally turned out exactly as I expected, instancing issues (watched 3 cmdr's try to instance with her and fail many times in a row), lot's of jump...scoop.. only to never see her, and then SDC take their own natural course. Event's can only work on a central server, never P2P.

What a stupid event... built up for a while only to be ended almost immediately by someone that went against orders and completely disregarded the event standards... picked to defend but destroyed... ruined it for everyone else, really... I was excited to go in and start defending, fighting other players and actually doing something in this game that had meaning, but hearing that not only was there griefing done, but also massive groups taking control and forcing players to join and have their ship inspected and approved by them is just beyond dumb...

this game is going to die just from these groups alone... I mean so many players already leave because of the fact that this game is only exploration and bounty hunting grinding... these events that actually do something now being controlled by PLAYERS and ruining it for others that want to play just makes it worse...

Wait, what? SDC and harry potter killed her because the defenders believed them when SDC said "trust us, we wont kill nobody!"? Really? That happened? Some prince in Nigeria desperately wants the email of these defenders. [haha]

Is that going to fit narratively? I haven't read the book/books, so don't know if she's the self-sacrificing type. But I'm interested in how she had a combat rank of Harmless. If she was really that inexperienced behind the commander's seat, then under the circumstances it would have made a lot of sense for her to switch ships with one of her other associates... I'm assuming at least one of the four is better than Harmless? Put the one with the most combat skill in Salomé's ship, knowing it will attract the most attention.

She's been through a lot so who knows, and it was a good while since I read the first book. She did seem to have a talent for combat in one incident in the book but didn't have hardly any kills.

It was stated before the event by the defenders that if any of the 4 got through that would be considered a victory. Salomés death will be a tragedy in Drew's book but it gives him a great ending for the book with a (probably not entirely unexpected) betrayal.

It will also provide a very poignant like with the first chapter of the first book.

Betrayal by the person you trusted always makes a good story - Judas, Obi Wan etc.

This post on reddit sums it up nicely:

"Sorry if I'm a bit out of the loop here, but am I right in thinking that people grouped together and decided that Harry Potter should be the one to protect Salomé? And that everyone else should leave their weapons behind? And that this same group of people bullied and berated people who genuinely wanted to help? And isn't Harry Potter the most famous ganker out there?
If I understand all of this correctly, then it is laughably idiotic."

If Drew actually put Harry Potter in the book as it unfolded, he can write "... based upon true events" with a good conscience.

And it would sell.... oh by God it would SELL!

Well I've got say had a blast, one disconnect at the beginning then no issues all the way, followed with salomé all the way (wanted her alive) but just couldn't keep up eventually. Sad ending but it's an ending... Well done Drew and everyone involved, people seem to forget just how much planning probably went into this event and are (as always) happy to point out the negatives.

Lol yes than a dozen commanders in very expensive ships shot him outside the station and died immediately. That'll teach him!

I had fun following her around as best I could via the friend marker. I was directing two wing mates as well. I hope the story starts moving again now though.

Wanna bet the story starts moving Big Time when some media attention is useful? Say, a release on a new platform? :p

Yeah, I'm sure everyone will be delighted to wait three or four years for that to happen.

No thanks. I like what I've currently got. If you don't, then go play something else.

But this is like Luke Skywalker being 'betrayed' by Darth Vader.

"Hey Luke, I have a surprise for you. Why not close your eyes and put your head on these railroad tracks for, errr, about four minutes?"

You missed my point by A LONG SHOT, mate...

And at the same time, the self-proclaimed defence "leadership" was pushing away players that earnestly wanted to help, because they weren't part of their clique.

Everything went better than i expected.

This. And congrats to Harry potter and SDC, constantly providing content in a game that needs it.

And no, I'm not SDC, just a bloke trying to make money in a bad galaxy.

And the grand price of incompetence goes to... PAC.

Over zealous defense to the point of wanting to kill any armed ships because they "can't be identified", alienating most of the community who wanted to protect Salome, and turning a lot of people against her for this very reason, yet for all their paranoia they themselves opened the door for the biggest known trolls on the community to have direct access to Salome.

I'm not sure if I should dedicate a big applause to SDC for their sneakyness, or to PAC for their incompetence. What is certain, is that I wouldn't want to be in shoes of the people responsible at PAC right now. It wasn't HP who killed Salome, it was you. SDC would most likely miss her completely if they weren't "inside". So you guys basically provided them with the only path in which Salome could have actually be killed.

There is just too much irony here. Anyway, grats magic boy, I'm kinda sad for Salome, but PAC certainly deserved this slap.

As soon as I saw that 'defense force' acting like tools and proclaiming themselves in charge I knew this was going to happen. I would have liked to join in and see her live, but you know how it is...Elite be serious bidness. Buttmonkeys like these are why I stopped playing EvE years ago. I just carried on blowing my own...I mean blazing my own trail.

You might be missing the point - SDC made it their goal to kill Salomé - they didn't realize that wasn't the goal of the operation. Salomé gave her life to give the others a chance to get through...." - others may disagree but that's one way to make it a nice story.

Not only that, but you have an arrogant guy trying to lead Salomés defence not realising that the biggest threat came from within - this is all a gift for any author - once the dust has settled Drew will actually be quite happy about it.
