Eh, if Salome's death was planned that way (a popular theory, but as of yet still only speculation) then more power to Drew. Some people are claiming it was scripted, but if she had lived they'd be claiming she was unkillable and it was scripted as well. Regardless of the outcome, people would cry conspiracy and see what they want to see.
The problem is, the way this was handled made me want to play Elite LESS. Much less.
The griefer issue and the legacy of SDC and Harry Potter has always been a sore point for a lot people. I don't mind PvP, I personally think it adds spice to the galaxy. I like piracy (though I never do it) and have been priated a few times (once blown up, once disabled, once submitted and gave up loot, twice run away, other interdiction escapes), but encouraging the kind of shenanigans we've seen here to me is just not cool. It doesn't foster community at all (well, other than united hate on one side and united snorts and garfuffles on another).
It's not about Salome dying. Dying was a fine option - but the idea of SDC convincing everyone to fly unarmed and then laughing in our faces after the fact for doing it is poor taste.
From a story point of view, I'm sure Drew will write a fine ending, but watching from the sidelines it hurts. SDC are patting themselves on the back and being the heroes of their story, but I ask you, from a narrative point of view, what is this encouraging?
As I said, it doesn't foster a sense of community, but it DOES foster a sense of ery. To me it sends the message that a-holes are rewarded, get the spotlight, get the girls, and you better get with the program or get left behind. The fact the message got out is irrelevant. The fact 3 out of 4 survived is irrelevant. The fact people are upset is all that matters - and you could kill them a thousand times in return and they won't care.
I don't want the ED community to be full of a-holes, but isn't that the message being sent?
I've been sick all day and wouldn't have been able to take part regardless. I spent my time searching for listening outposts (hoping to find a generation ship) while hearing and reading events unfold. And when it was over I just wanted to turn off my computer and not turn it back on again.
If that's the future of ED, I want no part of it.
Personally I think the REAL surprise was the fact that someone here actually found the big reveal half an hour before the event started. I was here for that as it unfolded (and subsequent attempt to quiet down) and couldn't help but have a smile on my face.
Explorers got there first.
At least there's that. That gives me hope
