Legs are boring. We can add them but it will be boring.

Legs are boring coz...You think they are boring.. Ok im sold!

See if you can spot the common denominator...the one thing most of the Devs actually DO want....It seems the person who least wants Legs are Braben himself, so.

It was a long time ago. After that, they said many times that adding a walk would be boring. In the games above walk not boring.

Short version:
I agree with Braben on the sequential order of how this is going to unfold. Planetary landings on atmospheric astronomical bodies should be prio 1.

Long version:
Space legs is however the one immersive thing that binds the immersion together with imagination. Why you ask?

If you can see your fellow crewmembers as you have your VR on, interact with them as a real person from both your real eyes, the immensity, immersion and imagination ( III ) forms a complex illusion that forces your brain to accept it as fully real. Ponder the situation as you see Han Solo and Luke Skywalker chatting in the cockpit. Now that could be reality for Elite Dangerous in the near future. Full immersion. No difference between reality and the simulation. ( except the VR helmets ). Most importantly, the scale and the scope of that reality, it will, not only blow your mind, but blow your dreams away.

Now that is perhaps not the point with a little space shooter game, but it is a dream for experiences. And I mean that literally. You can use such an environment for far much more than just swooshing through space with your friends. You can do actual work in reality with such technology. And that is not a small thing at all.

FD is on the virge of doing just that. A fully immersive VR enhanced 3D representation in space and time. What would not a surgeon do to get a set of VR vision goggles and practice performing surgery on a body that resembles a whole universe in its entirety, with all the bloodvessels and systems that interact and communicate in real time. Or an engineer, building new constructs with his associates all over the world, in real time, in the same time and space.

So, spacelegs is important, for the future.

I looks like all play and fun to most of you, but this technology is hardcore stuff for real. There is no end to the possibilities.

I remember that same discussion in EVE years ago and the players were pretty divided on how important or unimportant space legs are.
Even the tone of the discussion is the same, I could just hop over there and copy paste.

As said, I think meaningful content should be attached to them legs. And personally I think the ability to meet 'in person' in a game is cool.
Still, if it was the only thing you could do, I'd not prioritize it.

Well, look at what they did to them in Eve. Completely meaningless and unfulfilling. I certainly don't want it to end up the same here. I want actual things to do while walking around, not scenery or imagined things. I want the feature to be implemented when those things are there, especially when they base their development on usage. Imagine if they implemented the feature as simply as many people wanted them to (walking around their ship), then imagine it never gets more added to it because the novelty wore off and people stopped getting up to walk around their ship. Their approach to developing features dictates that if we want to see a fully implemented feature, we need them to at least mostly implement it in order for it to be a feature worth using and finishing. Being bar buddies isn't going to be enough, I can almost promise you that.

Its time to STOP! We had this very same discussion over and over and over again - pros space legs, and against space legs types writing in circles same old stuff.... when was that? Last week I think! Time to STOP!

This is the song that never ends
It just goes on and on my friends
Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was
And they'll continue singing it forever just because
This is the song that never ends...

Same here. I brought up the same doubts you did, I'm just ultimately more positive about space legs.

The discussion in EVE started after the first part - that you currently still see - was implemented with people worried this would distract from space game play although it was clear that a different team was working on the avatar game play.

Aside from Goons & Co of also being against it... As it currently is it certainly is dissatisfying to say the least.

I don't think that the "if this underdeveloped feature will be liked, we might develop it more" is their actual development strategy, rather just a marketing excuse to bury multicrew (a feature they probably regretted to have announced).

OP, to be more constructive - its coming, just not right away:

During a Q&A at PAX East 2017, lead designer Sandro Sammarco:

"Just to set the record straight, Space Legs and EVA gameplay, that's way off in the future. That's a goal. I've talked to David and it's always been part of his core vision for what Elite really is, even from way back in the day, it's always been about you're a person in a real futuristic setting, not just a ship. "

but if you think about it.......if db thinks legs are boring the they would fit perfect into his game since at present this to is boring

It's good that not everyone thinks so. Soon we will be able to appreciate it in ROKH + Adr1ft.

I hope after this, the FDevs and Mr. Braben will change their minds.

No they won't it's needed, and we're going to get it.

Space legs will mostly be used by explorers who personally want to go out in the black repairing their hulls. In a fairly dangerous and cold ( or hot ) environment.
And space pirates who want to capture the enemy vessel and take it as their own, not just destroying it or stealing its cargo. A captured Conda goes for 90 million CR.

Really now..Ok show me some evidence on that, where FD said "Adding legs will be boring" i'd love to hear that.

ROKH is a game that will be released soon. There will not be boring legs in space.

Adr1ft has already out. In this game you can see the legs realization in weightlessness.

"Created by team members behind Thief, Half Life 2, Dishonored, Age of Conan and Assassin’s Creed, ROKH is an adaptive survival game that is built on top of Unreal Engine 4 and deeply rooted in science. Players will land on Mars to find that the previously developed human colonies have been decimated and they must work together to overcome and survive. ROKH features a persistent world and co-op multiplayer."

"ADR1FT is an immersive First Person Experience (FPX) that tells the story of an astronaut in peril. Floating silently amongst the wreckage of a destroyed space station with no memory and a severely damaged EVA suit slowly leaking oxygen, the only survivor struggles to determine the cause of the catastrophic event that took the lives of everyone on board. The player fights to stay alive by exploring the wreckage for precious resources, and overcomes the challenges of an unforgiving environment to repair the damaged EEV and safely return home."

Neither of them are my jam.
