Elite Dangerous, FDev and the PS4 - Serious question. :)

I can't figure it out Duck, help me Duck, you're my only hope.

The following response is off-topic from OP:

Sure you can, you're clever. Now these other folks who are suggesting that people who game on a console do EVERYTHING on their console, well now that's just silly talk. That's one of the many reasons I have a console, because it is a dedicated gaming / multimedia machine that's way more capable than a PC of equal price.

Now here's the rub - I actually own a PC, golly gee. It's a laptop that doesn't have the internal cooling and graphics card necessary to do hard-core gaming, but it sure handles everything else just fine, like this forum for instance.

I switched from a $1,200+ PC to PS4 for my gaming because of the thrill and excitement of the launch I did not intend to go 100% console. But I never liked Steam and how it took the PC games out of Retail stores. Consoles are much more cost effective from my point of view. I still can enjoy my retail Disc love and at great discounts. PC gamers feel consoles hold them back but never mention minimum spec PC's many PC owners have. Its that same user base with low end PC's that yell master race first when they are far far from a high end PC [yesnod] I don't care if anyone only owns a nintendo retro or a colecovision a gamer is still a gamer! Share game love not platform wars.

I do everything on my console, don't you? Even my washing. I am sat at work also now doing my work on my PS4 I thought that was how everyone rolled.

sorry but its in the FAQ that ED:horizons is digital only on release day

Blight is correct!
They have since stated that they will be releasing a physical version. However, this will be later in the year (don't know) and after the digital release.

Hi, the PS4 FAQ has been updated to reflect the recently announced information of a physical version.

Will you make a physical disc version?
We are working on a physical version of Elite Dangerous to be available as an alternative to the digital-only version on the PS4™.

when there is further information regarding the PS4 Release, our Marketing and Community Teams will keep everyone informed.

Gary,

Something seems amiss:

What will Elite Dangerous on PS4™ come with?
The PS4™ version of Elite Dangerous will be the complete experience. Including Elite Dangerous and the Elite Dangerous: Horizons Season Pass.

or

Will you de-couple Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous: Horizons?
Yes, you will be able to purchase the base game and the expansions separately.

???

Also:

How much will Elite Dangerous on PS4™ cost?
Just £39.99 digitally on PlayStation™Network, Q2 2017.

Now replaced with:

How much will Elite Dangerous on PS4™ cost?
Prices are being finalised and we hope to announce the full price list before the game is released in Q2 2017.

I am blaming Brexit.

Great catch! I sure hope that if they are "breaking up the band", that it's to offer lower prices, not higher prices. In other words, the full version with Horizons better still be £39.99.

They are both true - the plan is to have a bundle which will contain the complete experience, and like the other platforms, be able to purchase the base game and expansions separately. It's also the reason the price is now TBC as we work up the pricing structure.

Wouldn't it make sense to just use the same pricing structure as Xbox?

£39.99 for the main game plus Horizons, £19.99 for the main game on its own, £19.99 to buy Horizons as an add-on.

But .. you can save a penny/shillings buying them separate! ;)

I'm hoping the base game is dropping in price to 15 with Horizons still 20-25. With a lower cost on the base game, they are likely to get people to buy it. Once they are hooked, they'll, pick up Horizons.

i understand saving money but i personally planned to get the £39.99 ED:horizons, for 2 big reasons. 1) download times vary and i don't want to be downloading the base game and expansions individually cos i would be waiting best part of 24 hours, and 2) why would any person really want only base game when between 50% and 75% of the in game mysteries and secrets need horizons to be accessed.

just doesn't make sense to me, and i'm slowly going insane in this place waiting for the release date :S

Its all a bit odd to change it at this stage.

I don't see any logic to running a non Horizons SKU.
Both the PC and Xbox communities launched before Horizons so already had an established product before the upgrade was released. PS4 doesn't have this heritage.
You also have an established price point for the online store at ~£40.

By splitting the game into Horizons and non-Horizons versions, you are also adding complexity of message to a new, potentially ignorant mass audience - typically a group you want to simplify any comms to.

My opinion: Elite Dangerous will launch as
1) a single, combined, product for £39.99 as per the original FAQ and
2) a 'Founders' pack for £49.99 containing the combined game, a couple of 1000 Frontier points to spend in the frontier store and possibly a special launch ship / skin
