I went back to trying the new Scan missions yesterday, and yes, they work as described - that is, they pay ludicrous amounts of money. I bought a Sidewinder that I called "The Exploit Abuser" and went to town. Occasionally I also find a good list of Massacre missions, for which I have my Python at the ready, to spice things up a bit.
The problem with these high-paying missions is that they make no sense. No realistic economy would pay you ONE HUNDRED TIMES the amount it takes to buy a Sidewinder for the effort required to drive one for 5 minutes.
Similarly with the Skimmer missions - which dumb bureaucrat will pay you millions of credits - enough to buy a well-equipped military spaceship - to destroy a bunch of easily replaceable skimmers?
And finally, they break the progression of the game. The entire progress system is designed to allow players to grow over time, and shortcuts like this create inflation for the rest of the game. If this game had more of a competitive focus it would be a different story, but I understand why people who made their money the hard way are upset.
