"The Aquarian Job" goes badly wrong - How I lost a ship mid-race but am still in the running

I was thinking if the tail planes that come with the ship-kits can restrain the SRV from flying to the back; or they're just visual and not in the volumetric model of the ship.

Alas ship kits are purely cosmetic (i.e. you can drive right through them).

Only in Elite: Dangerous would I see something like this. Madness, but fun madness. :D

Keep going CMDR! We believe in you!

Incidentally, if you're in Open or somewhere I'd love to stop by and see how you're getting on. :)

OP - I am surprised you haven't run out of onionhead yet and come to your senses, however, despite you being madder than a box a squirrels for some reason I am following your escapades. have a rep.

And thus began the Bucky Ball Race known as "The Plight of Sushi"
MAD! MAD I TELL YOU!!!
But I'm loving every bit of it.
Safe roving CMDR o7

More unedited footage, this time crossing a mountain range. Sound is out of sync somehow but I don't have time to fix it, gotta drive!

I'm gonna watch this properly on the way home but we were literally just having a discussion on FB about whether it was faster to drive half way around a planet or fly half way across the galaxy. I said you'd have to average about 80m/s which seemed ambitious ... then I watched your video. I've posted it on the group ... jaws are dropping as we speak. ;)

More progress. Lots and lots of really big craters. The worst is when you come flying out of one crater on a trajectory that's too high to cross its twin right next to it, but too low to smoothly ramp down the near side. Had that happen to me today more than once!

Continuing to keep 80-100 m/s as my target speed, depending on terrain and damage level. Believe it or not, this is me being careful... higher speeds are certainly possible, just increasingly dangerous and risky.

Not sure if I'm quite a third of the way there but it's pretty close. I'm 927km from Cooper Arena and 1570km from Kronecker Beacon (measured in straight lines). Anyone wants to do the trig, be my guest!

And yeah, driving around a planet can definitely be faster than going around the galaxy... for certain values of "driving" and certain sizes of planet, at least!

Great to watch how no lousy mountain can slow you down!

As for crossing a planet is faster the going around the galaxy: all I know is I started my journey to beagle point 5 months ago and I'm still nowhere near Beagle Point. I'm no Buckyballer tough :D

Video with a couple of the aforementioned craters:

And yes, suddenly finding yourself careening over the lip of one of these is mildly terrifying.

Sushi, you're nuts. Completely, beautifully and dramatically nuts.

Absolutely the dog's nuts, in fact!

.....P.S. I might need Iridium wing services if I decide to finish this thing in Open...

i could be wrong, it has been known, but i think our very own CMDR Bruski is an Iridium Winger as well as awesomely fast flyer. i'llPM him

(where's my lvl 5 engineered repometer when i need it?)
