Elite: Harmless - Karma System aka "be the Tamagotchi" - FRESH SALT, MINED RIGHT HERE

For the original, released in 1984, yes, the design intention was, without much doubt, PvE and single player.

Multi-player has formed part of the published game design of E: D since the start of the Kickstarter (along with a single player mode that also permits players to experience and affect the single shared galaxy state).

Offline mode did not feature in the published game design at the start of the Kickstarter - it was added about halfway through and sadly cancelled before the game was released.

Yes I was talking the hype before the kick starter. Multiplayer was added in and then we found out it was going to be focused around group PVE play, and a shared background simulation. PVP features were announced and really focused on right before the offline mode got axed.

What hype before the Kickstarter? Can you link to it?

I will look but before the kickstarter it was mostly other pages and not FDEV. It will be hard to find.

Here is the original kickstarter version of dealing with Griefing. Too bad they never did any of it. Still looking for the old articles.

"How do we plan to address PvP (player vs player) “griefing”?
An obvious danger is an advanced player with a big well-armed ship in a busy system spends their time just picking off beginners, for fun.

To understand how this will be stopped requires a little bit of understanding how real player ships will be treated slightly differently to non-player ships. Players will automatically be part of a “Pilot’s Federation” and will be identified as such, together with their ranking and name. Bounties are paid by this Federation – something that is therefore much higher for those that kill other Federation members. It will be balanced so that this cannot be used as an exploit (so a beginner killing a beginner is taken less seriously than an Elite pilot killing a beginner – it will be based on the ranking difference).

There are four separate ways we will address this:

1. The offender will very quickly get a serious price on their head (bounty) and criminal record. That price on their head will attract bounty hunters.

2. Local police or military will respond very quickly and strongly to them.

3. It will be legitimate for other players to attack them for the attractive bounty without attracting a bounty for themselves, as once there is a bounty on their head they are officially a pirate and ‘free game’ for everyone.

4. If enough players complain about the offender's behaviour in a certain time, then they will be banned from this group."

I have not seen anyone shadowbanned as was promised in the original kickstarter FAQ.

If it wasn't FDEV who was it? (and what position were they in to speak about a successor to Elite?)

EDIT:

An interview with Braben. Thats why its hard to find. There are tonnes of them to go through.

This is getting dumb. Every site that had that information is either dead or archived. My go to site is Developmag.com. I am almost sure that is where it the Elite 4 plans were laid out.

My other page died because Gamespy died
http://www.3dactionplanet.com/elite4/

Still looking.

Nope done looking its been an hour. I have check 10 more sites that I used to peruse back in the day. 4 of them did not have the data and 6 of them no longer exist. It surprises me how many game and development sites have not survived. Its only been 7 years.

Lunch over so still looking but not as hard.

Maybe they'll just destroy your ship anyway just so they can laugh at the thought of the months of exploration data you just lost and how salty you're feeling ;)
Would be a neat trick, since I'm in a private group :)

And indeed, I have read about the glee of players doing exactly that. It's a mindset that is happily alien to me and I would rather not associate with these players in game. Not that I'll extrapolate that mindset towards a judgement towards them personally.

Elite sure does have the worst anti-PVP community in any mmo currently.

It's a shame because this game could be so much more than a shallow shoot spaceships, space truck and procedural generate '''''explore'''''.
Instead of making idea's like powerplay mean anything as it was a horrendous failure, we get this disgusting entitled anti-PVP faction which has infiltrated the mod team of this forum trolling constantly banging on about changes only a minority want.

If you want the real story on how people view pvp in all its forms in elite, I suggest people check out the correct reddit threads, there was one done less than a week ago and in it most people were highly positive about even the 'worst' pvp ganking experiences and how most of them have never even experienced it or easily escaped. edit- for your consideration- https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDange..._the_only_one_who_hasnt_had_a_bad_experience/

Instead of getting the game to hold the hand of some easily angered bad player, we should be focusing on how to improve this game from its quite stagnant state. Put some real features that work into the game maybe?
We have had horizions the best thing about that was the planets everything else was a bummer and it looks like the final patch will be some alien related stuff most people don't care about after the first 5 mins.

PVP could take this game some where, the 'elite dads' are seriously not worth one ounce of your time FDEV.
Make your choice but if you want to scare away the PVPers you are going to be out of pocket, Elite is a niche right now but there are many Sci-Fi mmos coming up, not just the other big one.
Atm the only competition is EVE and its an almost entirely different set up.
Anyway. I like the game, i think it could be more than it currently is, if you go down the wrong path you are going to lose more than just the 'gankers' and thats not just boasting, I've spoken to people about it, check out the discord talks yourself i see FDEV are on it.
Have a closer look at reddit, these forums are biased towards a minority.
That as well is the fault of you but you let that happen FDEV.

We weren't talking about griefing but I'll take a whack at that list anyway.

1: Frontier nerfed bounty hunting before it could even get off it's feet by limiting the amount of credits that could be collected by another player to 1 million credits. We currently get more credits than that for transporting 10 tons of biowaste 10 LY. Frontier needs to increase the amount of credits a player can collect off of another player to make bounty hunting a practice worth pursuing.

2: We all know how laughable the response times and power of NPC security forces are.

3: Remains true, however ineffective it is.

4: That's not necessarily a "shadow ban" as much as it is a "hey we're kicking you out of Mobius for PvP". Open is not a "group" and nobody has ever been shadow banned because Frontier is never going to pursue that option.

What are now referred to as game modes were, in the Kickstarter pitch, referred to as groups (see last paragraph):

FAQ- Elite: Dangerous

How does multiplayer work?
You simply play the game, and depending on your configuration (your choice) some of the other ships you meet as you travel around are real players as opposed to computer-controlled ships. It may be a friend you have agreed to rendezvous with here, or it may be another real player you have encountered by chance. All players will be part of a “Pilot’s Federation” – that is how they are distinguished from non-players – so you will be able to tell who is a player and who is a non-player easily.

You will be able to save your position in certain key places (probably just in space stations, but possibly while in hyperspace too, if we feel it is needed). A save-and-quit option will be freely available at those points, as will the subsequent reload, but there will be a game cost for a reload following player death. Your ship will still be intact in the condition it was when the save occurred, but there will be a game currency charge (referred to as an insurance policy) for this. This is to prevent the obvious exploit of friends cooperating and killing each other to get each other’s cargo. If you can’t pay, then it will accumulate as an in-game debt, and the police may chase you!

There are no multiplayer lobbies, and the game will be played across many servers, augmented by peer-to-peer traffic for fast responses. Session creation and destruction happens during the long-range hyperspace countdown and hyperspace effect (which is a few seconds only), so is transparent to the player.

We have the concept of “groups”. They can be private groups just of your friends or open groups (that form part of the game) based on the play styles people prefer, and the rules in each can be different. Players will begin in the group “All” but can change groups at will, though it will be possible to be banned from groups due to antisocial behaviour, and you will only meet others in that group.

I stand corrected on terminology.
I remain standing behind the fact that Frontier has neither, nor will they ever, shadow ban people. The dearth of combat loggers, with video evidence, who remain in open and visible to other players both in SC and normal space stands as testament to that.

1. That is because it was being exploited to make billions within a few weeks. They could not find a way to make it worth peoples time and have not revisited it after fixing the loophole.

4. Back then Open was Group. Everyone started in group and you could pull people into sub groups. But Open Mode and Private Group mode sounds better.

Nobody here is Anti PVP. In fact if this game had real combat based PVP and you could progress through the game with it, I would be doing it right now.

Unless you set up personal Duels, all other combat based PVP has absolutely no tangible in game effect or benefit. It has no risk or reward and is so completely dull and boring its a waste of time.

If there were PVP then I am sure you wouldnt see people complaining.

Also if you check any of the PVP focused forums on Reddit you will see its the same 30 people circle QQing around the same issue. Just because the subredit is full of the same people and continually posting doesnt mean they are a majority. They are the majority of people complaining in that subReddit nothing more.

Yeah, Maynard corrected me on Point 4. For 1, however, Frontier still needs to revisit this. We went from crawling along in the financial game to suddenly pulling in millions upon millions of credits even before mission stacking and board flipping became a thing. The initial 1 million credit limit needs to be revisited, as does bounty hunting in general.

One of the Frontier Devs is on record as stating that Frontier are well aware that the majority of players don't get involved in PvP.

.... so which minority are the forums biased towards?

I just wish I could be a real Pirate.

This game has nothing to drive me to it. I will never chase down a trade ship that can in no way defend itself either by damaging me or has no consequence for me. Its a hollow experience. ..l.. I think.....I think.. I know why our player markers look the way they do.

Finally decided to start on this thread and got about 15 words in when...wait for it...came across the phrase "solo coward mode." Perhaps if I kept reading I would've gained context but I guess I should have listened to my instinct and not clicked at all.
