CQC The CQC/Arena Suggestions thread.

with a couple o million creds prize pot
I appreciate that's more than CQC pays right now, but since I can get that much from a single virtually unfailable one-hop trade mission in ten minutes, I doubt it would be enough money to attract people to make a special trip either.

Not from the core I wouldn't

I think having the option to join from menu and the idea of adding it to certain stations' services. Like you could have a Thunderdome megaship that travels around and has tons of combat pilots around it docking for a shot inside The Coliseum. They could even make it sort of the Jameson Memorial of fighter modules. It could have every available size fighter bay and fighter ship available at outfitting for 15% discount.

Also- I don't think anyone's mentioned this, but it would be super cool if whenever you level up in CQC you won like a loot crate with a single random paintjob. Tourneys could reward large payouts and a special paint pack.

Oh good heavens. If there's any way to be certain to make me never even think of touching CQC again, it's adding *loot crates*. I've had more than enough of loot crate cancer since the days of CoD Modern Warfare, we really do not need that kind of thing and I really wish games would get away from that mindset. Those dang things are invading everywhere and it makes me sick!

Tournaments are another thing, that's fine, but PLEASE no loot crates or "daily login bonus" or any of that mess....

__

The other thing that will keep me not touching CQC is no PvE mode. If there's any good cure for low population woes, it's PvE mode. SJA can go to town with AI ability if she needs to, whatever it takes so that games can launch in seconds rather than minutes or more.

I was being glib - fine make it 100 million - interested now? The money can be set however high it needs to be - I love the idea of people gathering in a specific location and time for a full on throwdown - paying to enter, bringing their engineered SLFS - maybe that's a bad idea, maybe everyone gets the same stock choices..

CQC is the equivalent of an E-Sport in the Elite Dangerous universe. It is a simulation, so there are no actual physical arenas or ships. It is all virtual, but it is a "sport" that is taken relatively seriously within the universe. "The Blaster" in Todd The Blaster McQuinn's name, for example, comes from a successful season in CQC.

Building on this lore aspect could give Frontier an avenue for integrating CQC into the main game in an organic way that could encourage participation without requiring a huge overhaul. They could treat CQC as a popular in universe e-sport (which it is according to lore), and tie earnings and notoriety/popularity to the level of success in CQC. For example, they could introduce a leader board and ranking system, and the further up the ranking ladder you are, the more money you get for winning. The payouts at the upper tiers should actually be quite substantial, in line with what would be paid to a celebrity athlete in the Elite universe. They could also take advantage of the new Holo-Me system and create live billboards in stations which feature the commanders at the top of the rankings, again building on the idea that CQC is a popular in world e-sport. There should be a Galnet news section that features the top results and leaderboards for CQC, and presents it as a high interest sports news item.

There are lots of way in which this idea could be blown out, especially in terms of expanding on how the ranking system would work, but the core idea is that CQC should be treated as a popular virtual e-sport within the Elite universe, and success within Arena should be reflected within the main game in areas that make sense.

The deeper lore integration and the opportunity to have their faces and reputations as great pilots integrated into the main game based on their successes would provide a powerful motivator for commanders I think.

Thoughts?

Personally I don't think the scoring is 100%

you should get -25 points for being destroyed.

If one person gets 7 kills and 6 deaths, they shouldn't win over some with 5 kills and 0 deaths.

But that's just me.

Some great ideas there - CQC does seem to be very standalone with almost no references within the main game. This may be a contributing factor to why it hasn't proved particularly popular; despite it being hugely enjoyable (imho...). Even if it's not possible (or too much effort) to do something like launch CQC from the main game, other tie-ins should be easier.
Such as the Galnet section you mentioned - Statistics/information like this would also be good to see:

Cmdr X has achieved the rank of Hero
The following Commanders prestiged this week:
  • Cmdr X (level M)
  • Cmdr Y (level N)
  • Cmdr Z (level O)
Cmdr Z has achieved 10000 confirmed kills
The top 3 Commanders with the most kills this week are:
  • Cmdr A (245)
  • Cmdr B (208)
  • Cmdr C (196)
Presumably the gathering of the weekly statistics would be automated once setup.
Also liked the Holo-Me and ranking ladders ideas...

Thanks Eminor, and yes, exactly. Stats like those would be great if they surfaced them in Galnet in a polished way that felt like a sports news report.

Also, in its simplest form, launching CQC from the main game could work exactly like Multicrew. Right now you select multicrew from an in cockpit menu, and it bounces you straight out of your current session and into a multicrew session, loading screen and all. Honestly, it is a little jarring, but that aside the same can be done for CQC. Add a "connect to CQC virtual hub" option somewhere in the cockpit, and selecting it would bounce you out of session and into the CQC app in the same way that Multicrew currently does.

Again, CQC is a virtual e-sport within the Elite universe. You connect to it with something akin to telepresence, so this would actually make sense within the framework of the game lore.

I only say this here because FDEV doesn't respond to queries about CQC AT ALL anyways, so I know nothing will come of this reply.
@FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV @FDEV

Ever wonder why practically no one plays CQC?
The following is cut/ pasted from the Elite Dangerous facebook page:
==============================================================================================================================================

Note results are typical. It's the same 7 people pretty much all the time, because newer CMDRs are always @#$% off at the "Elite" folks. Here, "Elite" means one-trick kill thieves. @Frontier Developments has seriously DROPPED THE BALL on their product here. Fix the scoring to damage dealt, and everyone would be on an even playing field and wouldn't have the urge to use exploits to progress passed their peers. Also, Paper airplanes in space has no need of weapon power ups.
===================================

Why no one plays CQC? Oh yeah, the scoring makes others be kill thieves, THE DETERMINATION IS INSTANTLY MADE THAT THE COMBAT IN THE MAIN GAME MAKES MUCH MORE SENSE, AND PEOPLE NEVER COME BACK TO CQC AGAIN. End.
===================================

FIX CQC Arena:
Remove the weapon power ups.
Fix scoring to % damage dealt = % score.
===================================

Since I NEVER see a response from FDEV on the CQC forums... here I am.
===================================

Been looking for ANY words from FDEV in regard to the CQC fiasco.
===================================

Didn't you guys sell CQC as a stand-alone product? How's that going?
===================================

Why is CQC a watered down version of combat in the main game? Isn't CQC 'COMBAT SPECIFIC'? Where is my 'highest threat selector'? Why is the hull made of cardboard? Why does my target selector select the shield boost (or any other selectable thing) 3 km away, instead of the enemy that I'm looking straight at who's only 500m away and lighting me up? Why is scoring so bad that the 'Elite' players have to exploit and steal kills to git gud?
===================================

I consider myself 'Elite' because I'm one of only 6 people in the WORLD that plays CQC.
This is not a good thing.
===================================

Lots of ideas for you to fix your game. You hiring, I'll come do it right after I learn game coding lol. Is it anything like Basic? ba ha ha

seriously tho, please fix it. MAYBE a full room of 8 on a typical Friday night at 19:00 on the east coast of the United States. It's because it's not fun with "Elites" exploiting the horrible scoring system and/ or camping the weapon power ups. The fact that I have never seen a response to ANYONE'S discussions and inquests regarding CQC is highly disturbing.

For a start, we'd all be very pleased if you announced a concerted EFFORT to fix CQC Arena. Start with that.

Thank you for your time in reading through all this warranted Salt. I'm passionate about CQC because, through all it's many flaws, it's still hella fun.

All that sounds great, but won't work if FDEV don't take care of the reasons why no one likes CQC in the 1st place. You want to make it easier for people to join CQC so that they can get wrecked, and then never come back. We see new CMDRs all the time Prophet, and you've been told by a full room several times to stop smashing them. But you camp out at the weapons and cloaking, and smash noobs like crazy, then the noobs leave and never come back. Not picking a fight here, just stating why no one plays CQC. This IS the concern of this thread, is it not?

You're not the only one who does this of course, and it's not your fault that these ships are built from cardboard, or the scoring is the way it is, but you had the luck of posting before me ;)

Let the noobs get good, figure out the differences they now have to deal with, and maybe gain some good skills over time. THEN, just MAYBE, we'll have more than one lobby going at a time in this GLOBALLY ONLINE VIDEO GAME.

IMO there are more people who enjoy CQC (or at least are willing to try it) but can't find a game when they want than there are people who dislike the mechanics.

I don't think it's worth talking about drastically modifying the mechanics (or adding new game modes) until we can solve the more fundamental availability problem.

... and for the record, I think all the currently active veteran players go out of their way not to stomp on newbies.

Can't rep you enough!

Edit: Noticed that I didn't rep you at all! corrected

I would love to see a Counter or something similar that lets you know that perhaps others are waiting for a game to start as well as yourself.
Then you can see that it only takes 1 or 2 players to join and people won't leave the matchmaking queues so quickly.
I am loving Deathmatch right now even though I am getting whomped by players Prestiged many times over, BUT I would love to play a bit more Team Deathmatch and it's the long wait for a gasme, not knowing if anybody else is interested that is frustrating.
Something to let us know that others are waiting also, would be a great wee addition I reckon :D

Also, why no comms?
If there are 8 people enjoying a Deathmatch but it is a little one-sided because of just 1 or 2 Prestiged players, surely comms would allow us to agree to a Team Match and split the resourcves AND skills?

why not a old school radar?

a mod that alows to detect hostile CMDRs in cover

mod will fit inplace of chaff or SR

radar rotates and scans for emissions periodically creating a "ping" sound similar to the SRV

Don't map it on the HUD nor radar, is passive

Could this be an idea guys?

You mean like the Radar boost for the Eagle?
Nobody uses that.

I would like a 1 on 1 match. Change it so your opponent is always target locked. It would also be great for slow times since only 2 players needed for match.

I recently returned to CQC after a VERY long time.
Last played it around 1 month after release (got lvl 40 but unable to force myself to continue).

Initially I just wanted to “suffer trough” my last 10 levels to get access to station and never return to CQC. But I found it fun right now.
The most amusing thing is WHY I think it become more enjoyable after all this time.

CQC is unpopular (or, more precisely, almost completely dead) and FD long ago stopped any attempts to resurrect it.
And it have some positive effects (aside from obvious negative ones).

1) Due to its unpopularity, it is free from cheaters now (they were main factor to stop playing CQC for my friends and me). There is no reason to develop cheats for game played by 100 people in world.
2) With 4-5 players in queue, there is no room for matchmaking system to break things. In most cases, there are the same 4-5 veterans every match, with comparable playing skills.
3) Players use discord as “unofficial lobby chat”, thus compensating for the lack of in-game one.

Therefore, the difference between “awful game mode I must endure to get access to good things in main game” and “fun mini-game I actually enjoy playing” is NOT in some additional features, but in working basic mechanics mandatory for any session-based PvP game.

This is suggestion thread (although, never visited by FD), so…
Simply add in-game player lobby, working matchmaking, scoring system that make sense, a few more maps/arenas. And that will be enough.
