I recently ordered an X55 Rhino with some trepidation having seen the build quality problems mentioned on Amazon US. Well, it arrived a couple of days ago and I'm delighted to be able to you that, like a an earlier poster, I've had no problems of any significance. SW3 LED on the throttle is a little dimmer than the rest, and there was a slight tendency to drift on the RZ axis which I cured with the smallest of deadzones. It has loads of buttons and switches, so many in fact I'm having trouble remembering what I bound each one to.

How long it lasts is something only time will tell, but so far, very happy.

:)

Scan are getting 23 in supposedly tomorrow and 22 were taken by back orders, I got the 23rd. Over clockers are getting 30 in and they are all taken by back orders.

I just need to hope that they are supplied in full.

So..... right X52 stock will arrive sometime next week..
and heres something you didnt know...

The X-55 Rhino is due at the end of july

There will be some available X52 PRO/Standard stock next week and i can let anyone know next week if they are interested..:D

So it seems everyone wants the PRO and not the standard..

BUT.... which is best if you had to choose from X-55 Rhino or X52 PRO .. if they would be the same price...:S

im still keen on using mouse and keyboard purely just for the extra buttons; But i do like the look of the X-55 old fashioned flip switches and they look more appealing the more i play ED so i was thinking about getting one :)

so any advice would also be welcome :)

I really does hurt my soul, to see people settle for second hand crap like Saitek.

standards have fallen to the point where people accept what ever is tossed to them because it "Looks good"

if you are gonna spend money on a HOTAS.. then at least get something decent... hell get a Warthog is your pride demands it... that's the minimum I would allow for...

if you want quality and durability along with accuracy , then get a CH HOTAS

are you saying this CH brand is good ?? the only sticks i could see on there website where these - JOYSTICKS found a video review comparing (posted below)

why is this X-52 pro better than the newer X-55?
(i know thats not what you wrote but its what you ment)

And... yes i would like to know this as well

its a shame about the PRO its got a coloured LED screen but i do like the blue glow of the standard x-52 it reminds me of something out of GALAXY QUEST or Star Trek and since im flying a space ship i like it lol :D hmm i think the wife would just call me a geek :(

**update**
Wooo pretty lights on the X-52 PRO as well (im such a sado for lights) found these images on amazon here is a video review i found so this stick also looks nice = YOUTUBE

Found a nice video review of the X-55 - WOW it looks MASSIVE! Youtube but it looks nice and solid and its got a lot of buttons for mapping

now something more interesting a proper hands on test with ELITE and the X52 vs the CH Stick - youtube

looks like the CH Pro throttle and the CH F-16 comes out tops -hmmm :S

So like CH £180 vs £100 X-52 PRO i cant justify the £80 extra just to play 1 game - so looks like its the X-52 PRO is the winner for me as it does get many good reviews else where

ps.

I never realised these sticks where so big nothing like the old sticks from the 80's (maybe im showing my age now lol)

I realise it doesn't directly address the question you asked, but if you're stretched for cash what about the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X? I've never used one, but people say it's a good stick for the price.

I had one for a couple of weeks before sending it back to Amazon; the throttle just wouldn't centre correctly and personally, I didn't find the buttons in the best positions, especially on the throttle. On the plus side you can map every button in ED. The negatives weighed tipped the scales and I'm considering an X52 Pro (or Warthog if I can sneak past her indoors).

i attempted to bid on a x-52 and lost

if you want one scan have six on pre-order due in the 14th, only one of those is sold so far (to me :D ) so it will probably be your best bet to get your hands on one quickly. (NOTE: this information was retrieved via live chat today at 2pm - get in quickly if you want one of the last 5)

I have an x52 pro and has everything that is needed. The game was designed for it. The biggest problem is that it is saitek/madcatz. You will wear out things on it and there is no parts options. If it's under warranty you have to send the whole unit back for replacement. Then wait for the unit to come back or buy another one in the meantime.

I wish the game would have been designed around a different joystick. With the throttle detent in the x52/x52 pro being the mark for the "blue" zones it's kinda locked it in. Like others have said, it's quality is it's downfall.

I think the biggest problem with the X52 is the metal shaft rubbing on 1mm thick wires where they come out the bottom. With constant use they wear the insulation and things start to fail. Mechanically they seem ok. If your handy with a soldering iron it's pretty easy to repair the broken wires or add an extension.

If your outside warranty, it's worth getting some thick heat shrink tubing. splitting it and fitting it around the base of the shaft as best as you can making sure the seam is opposite to where the wear on the wires is most likely to occur.

Other than that, and a simple magnet mod for more linearity and precision that requires no extra parts other than some blutack. The stick is good.

I use VKB Fat Black Mamba (funny name but really great stick). All important parts from metal. MaRS non contact sensors. When i used it first time after modern plastic crap then tears of happiness appeared in my eyes. Only one big disadvantage - PRICE.

i might be able to get the X-55 rhino, but i wounder i hear they have some serious quality issues

No problems here. Have a look at the "What joystick..." poll thread. It's probably not an exact reflection of ownership but 122 either have or intend to get an X-55, and that's from just over 1,000 respondents. Set against that (admittedly rather unscientific) usage figure, a few RMAs doesn't seem too bad odds to me. And don't forget that the X-55 is a relatively new product. It's likely that any early production faults are being addressed in later production runs.

If you check out the X-52 and X-52 Pro pages on Amazon, you'll also find a proportion of RMAs mentioned in the reviews, so it's not like problems are confined to the X-55. My feelings regarding Saitek is that their quality control does leave something to be desired but if you get a bad one, then they'll replace it without quibble, dependent on stock. It also seems to be the case with the X-52 and X-52 Pro that good ones keep on working for years and years. I'm expecting this to be the case with the X-55 too.

Any stick will do as long as it has enough buttons to map. It is what you are used to not what is best . I have an x52 and it works fine for me as Im used to it . You would get the same experience paying 35 quid for a stick with built in throttle. Stick snobbery is just fuelled by marketing and plays on custumers thinking they need to spend vast sums of money to get the ideal experience. Yeah ok some are built more robustly but when a 200-300 quid stick plays up your far more hacked off than if a 30-40 quid one does.

Best stick I ever had was a microsoft sidewinder . Lasted for years, always worked even when thowing it across the room when taken out in Jumpgate.

If you can afford to spend the money fine spend it, but your experience wouldnt be any less with a cheaper one with throttle and enough buttons.

Just my opinion from decades of gameing and I accept others may disagree.

So it looks like ill be trying to push for a X-55. Are the keybinds set up nicely for the Rhino? if so can anyone post a link?

There's a thread here discussing X-55 bindings here.

User jgm has put a useful web tool together that generates a printable reference sheet from your custom bindings file, here.
