News Elite Dangerous - 2.4 and beyond

Thanks FD and thanks to all my fellow "whiners" for pushing FD to work on improving the core game. We couldn't have done it without you.

Fanboys, you can offer apologies and thank us "whiners" any time you'd like........any time.

Wow. I gotta stop coming to this dump.
Really? The "Fanboys" were all blind to any ED faults and didn't want changes and improvements? FD didn't see it and thanks to "you" we now have it?
Mother of God get over yourself.
As a "fanboi" I should start whiny threads on the same thing, day after day, threatening to rage quit if improvements are made to the core game system? I...I...*urp*

You know how it goes:

1) Make up imaginary people
2) Claim superiority over them on the internet
3) ???
4) Profit!

I think everyone agrees that there are tons of core-changes that should/could be made. As NeilF said, the interesting bit is now what exactly these core changes will be. Ofcourse, brace yourself for the usual 'See, there will never be [x] because FD will do [y] next!' and "FD dont care about [z]" posts. :D

Just for the record, when atmo planets are being released it'll be thanks to me, because I said I wanted it. You're welcome. :p

All hail Sleutelbos!

if you strike anywhere near the right note here Frontier you could have that golden ticket, new players and retention.

You've summed up my own feelings. It's the first real hopefull news I've seen in a long time... though my degree of hope is very much tempered by 3+ years of having hopes dashed by fdev. If they get it right it could be (if you'll pardon the pun) a game changer. If they do their usual half-baked job it could be a death knell.

And you'll be paying for it too. Don't you just love today's marketing techniques? :)

We don't know whether core gamplay updates will be season 3. All they have said that the next major updates after 2.4 will be core gampley and QoL upgrades. As 1.7/2.1 and 1.8/2.2 and 1.9/2.3 have all been considered major updates, I suspect that the these major updates will not be paid for. People who are playing the main game will still get these core updates.

We will be paying for the next big expansion which will be something bigger then core updates and QoL, likely another planet type to land on, or gas giants. I can see this coming out either xmas or earlyish next year.

So, as far as I can tell...

They announced:

1. The previously announced 2.3.10

2. An announcement on June 13/14 where they will announce 2.4, but this announcement will not tell us everything in 2.4, because it is story related

3. Another announcement at E3, that will announce a date when they (hopefully) announce details of what they have planned after 2.4.

4. Releases after 2.4 will "focus on core gameplay, existing features, quality of life and other improvements" - i.e. Some stuff tbd

... I think I'll wait a bit before getting excited :p

I don't see this coming until later next year

It's not really good news if you're part of the macOS community and can't get any answers from FD about the past let alone the future.

Why do you guys insist on putting your ED issues at the feet of Frontier when the facts clearly demonstrate that this is 100% an Apple related issue?

You guys need to stop living in your fantasy world and get real about the situation. You do have alternatives if you are serious about getting back into full access of the game.

You could do what I did and build a gaming PC specifically for playing ED. Or... If that is out of your price range, you can always pick up a used Xbox One or PS4 for a couple of hundred bucks and play ED on one of those.

The MacOS version is a lost cause. The ball is in Apple's court and they couldn't care less about gaming at this point. I suggest you accept this reality and stop expecting Frontier to magically fix an issue that they have no control over whatsoever.

For the record... In our household we own 8 Mac computers (3 desktops and 5 Macbook Pros, 3 iPads and 3 iPhones + 1 Windows 10 high end gaming rig which includes an overclocked i7 6700k CPU @ 4.6Ghz along with a brand new EVGA 1080ti FTW3 GPU.

There is not a Mac on the planet that could touch my gaming rig in terms of performance even if I could magically run 2.3.02 on OSX.

While I look forward with cautious optimism, the vagueness of its content reminds me of the empty buzzphrase filled words of a political speech.

Depends really. If they go with a v2.5+ they'll be free as part of the v2.x package. If instead it's a v3.x I'm sure it'll be paid updates. They've already said they're changing the funding model away from seasons, partner that with 2+ years of us complaining about core features, "mile wide inch deep" etc making these improvements highly sought after and the fact that they also said they are devoting "significant time" to it and I doubt they'll be giving them away for free.

Of course, this is just speculation. We don't even really know what we'll be getting yet.

um - did you read the same thing that I read? - QoL and core fixes are EXACTLY what he said....

Thanks for focusing on just one sentence and ignoring the rest. Yes I read that, but I don't get my hopes up as how well it will be done and to what extent.
Right now it's all a bit vague so forgive me if I'm not optimistic until I see it for myself. And we won't get to see that until some unknown time AFTER 2.4

Errr... did you even read the update? It was specifically about fixing bug and deepening the core gameplay without adding new features.

Nah couldn't be bothered to read it. Just went in blind.

What bugs are being fixed ? What core gameplay is being looked at ? It's all too vague. No mention of details. Hence my question mark.
And no-one said 2.4 was about core game play and new features. They said that was coming in with patches BEYOND 2.4. So 2018 then.

So Good and waiting news really;-
  • 2.3.1 - Everyone gets that when the PS4 is released on about the 27th. Apart from the Weapons and Fighter Lock, we don't know what's in it but as we're having a Beta beforehand, I'm going to assume there's going to be a bit more to to 2.3.1 than the weapons lock which is why this was pushed back from Mid M till now. (Hope we get a roll function in the gunner role; It's doing my OCD head in). Although it does look like we'll be locked to whatever the release cycle is for the consoles.
  • 2.4 - There's stuff coming and it will be released in stages. This implies a story line which will unfold over time and releases (Bit like the Formidine Rift mystery where new content was added with every point release). As I thoroughly enjoyed keeping track of that mystery, that's a positive. I'm just hoping they add a little bit of fixes and functionality as these releases come out.
  • 'Beyond' - The Good news is that is proves that Frontier thinks there's still life in Elite after 2.4 (despite the vast amounts of salt on the Forums and Reddit), The bad news is that any salt mining is delayed until after these Event which Zac mentioned (Official Elite Meet II anyone?)

We knew that they were going to have to do a second pass on most of the features anyway, so here's hoping they increase the social side of the game.

Pheonix D'Fire,

Please stop misappropriating the term 'salt'.
