News Elite Dangerous - 2.4 and beyond

if there is anything they can release in stages story wise,
then its bound to be either:

1. a great war between fed and empire
2. a great war between humans and flowers(hips)
3. a great thresome wear between the above factions.

... and karma system :D

Seems an opportune moment to mention (for those that weren't aware) that there are two subtly different appropriations of the word "salt" on the internet.

There "salt" as in "salty" as in ...

http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/salty

And there's "salt" as in "salty tears" as in "tear farming" (originally from Eve?) as in PvP agro (in and out of game) for the express purpose of savouring the subsequent complaints threads.

I reckon' most people here actually use it in the former sense whereas I suspect you're referring to the latter sense?

Aren't they one and the same?

There's a third way it's used but it's constrained to these forums.
Someone posts a complaint/negative criticism. Some twerp responds with "Salty lol", misunderstanding what the term is used for but just wants to belittle the poster rather than debating the actual points.

Don't mean to hurt you dude, but Apple and video games have a long past of being mostly incompatible and the trend's not likely to change. The only advice anybody here can give is to move to a PC and leave your Mac for everything else except games.

Or buy a console. That's what I did. I'm sorry, I'm so very, very sorry, but I gave up hope some time ago that I'll ever be able to do serious gaming on my Mac. Time to play "Let it go" because the future of the Mac is looking kinda chilly.

Special event = party, right?

Established elite-related or gaming event, or entirely new FDev specific thing?

How do we get there?

Don't get TOO excited... ;) You missed an important part of that message.... let me re-quote... so, after 2.4 that will happen. :)

"We’re happy to be able to confirm that the next major updates following 2.4 will focus on core gameplay, existing features, quality of life and other improvements! "

Absolutely my bad, I got too excited by all the news! I will read instead of scan next time! lol

SORRY, SORRY EVERYONE, SORRY! lol

Well, the updates and improvements can be new features. For example, the current QoL improvements were: ship transfer, increasing the materials storage and adding storage for modules. 2 of these 3 are actually new features - while still being technically improvements to the core gameplay.

Adding new stuff for explorers to find - new features, while improving gameplay.

Adding new mechanics for black markets (buy illegal/stolen goods; new, related missions; undercover cops offering stolen goods on mission board) - all new features, while... and so on.

If they combine this with adding some completely new stuff, that are not classed as improvements to current gameplay - I think it's perfectly understandable if they charge for it.

Agreed, but some will almost certainly not be.

For example, consider a revamp to the exploration "honk", or to a detailed surface scan. What would this mean to a Season 2 and Version 3 CMDR winging up? What will it mean to a Season 2 player multi-crewing on a Version 3 CMDR's ship? It all gets rather contrived.

All that development effort will either have to be given away for free back to Season 1/2, or, gated to Version 3, most likely (IMHO) by a instance block. eg: Version 3 players will be in a different instance to pre-Version 3 players because the game mechanics are very much different. The alternative is to not develop said features, or dumb them down I guess...

I can't see instance blocks happening at all, doesn't seem to be the FDev work apart from planets. I see one big paid for expansion a year or 18 months and some free updates for everyone inbetween. Some of these updates may also update areas for the expansions as well. This is how I would go about it anyway.

But it's all guess work at the moment. We will find out soon.

Great news re: fleshing out current features. What I've most been waiting for since release are missions which really take advantage of the all (/more of!) the great base game mechanics (flight & maneuvering/docking/scooping/silent running/etc.) and challenge the player. Looking forward to seeing what FDev will have to offer.

I think you're probably right... BUT, if at some point there's some serious core improvements that can only be carried out if an instance block is used (for the new version onwards), I'd probably see it as worthwhile (if the addition merited it of course).

That's correct.
Glad to see people positive about the news though!

The back-end of the game has gone through changes over the past year, I can see why FDev would want to bring out an update they may have been working on for a long time that was optimized for older technology, then excise the old tech and focus on improving what is left "under the hood" in the game that remains . . .

Beyond

So with the Horizon season of expansions coming to a close, what is beyond 2.4 I hear you ask? Well, it certainly isn’t the end of this amazing journey… we’re only just getting started!

I know we won't be having the typical "season" model of monetization after 2.4, but this is what Season 3 or Chapter 3 or 3.0 or however you want to label it should be called:

Elite Dangerous 3.0: Beyond

What about Beyond the Frontier ;)

I really don't want to be a party pooper but srsly? This is politician grade spin.

2.4 – “????”
I can, however, tell you that this update will be slightly different to previous ones - content will be revealed over time rather than all being available on day one. Additional pieces of exciting content will surface over the coming months as the narrative progresses.

Ah, because the storyline content and content up to now appeared at breakneck speed as soon as the patch was released. So we can expect the 2.4 storyline and content rollout to be even slower than the current one... Yikes, that's practically geological timescales, in terms of modern gaming.

Beyond

So ... what is beyond 2.4 … we’re only just getting started!
What? 1/3 of the way in and just getting started with future content rolling out slower than the current content... To say Elite is a slow starter is perhaps an understatement.

We’ll be sharing more news on that content and our roadmap at a very special event coming later in the year - more details on this event will be released in the weeks after E3.

So... in a nutshell... 3.0 looks like next year....

Core game improvements are OK... if they are free. I don't think many people will pay again for... ¿improved mining? ¿improved multicrew?

I want you to make money, Frontier... but I think updates like atmospheric landing or space legs will sell much better than updates with only core game improvements.

This is the big question. How Frontier will market these updates ?
