**OFFICIAL DAILY UPDATE 3!**
Greetings Commanders o7
It good to see a continued interest in this thread.
Thanks for the suggestion to
include the update links in the first post which I have now done!
Anyway without further a do, lets get on to todays update:

Home Sweet Home and the (un) safety of Stations.
So because you
mastered the radar and
mastered avoding, escaping and submitting to the interdiction mini game, you finally arrived back at Jameson Memorial in your Shieldless Asp with all that exploration data. You let your guard down as no one would ever try or have a reason to attack or”grief “ you now right?
Wrong.
Especially if its a station located in a system with an
ongoing Community Goal. In fact you are just as likely to be a target, and in some cases even more so, than if in SC in that system.
Nobody needs a reason to blow pixels up. This is a video game.
Don’t spend time wondering about why someone would afterwards and complaining on the forums. Just
assume they would and be vigilant at all times.
So at a station theres 3 main ways that you can get
"Grieffed"
1) Straight Up Shooting
The easier of the 3 methods to counter, but still deadly combined with the element of surprise. Add to this some engineered weapon effects (we will go more into this in later posts) and you can be quickly dispatched right on the Doorstep of that station you felt so safe with. Don’t rely on the station defense to save you.
As a rule of thumb, if you arrive at a station, the first thing you should do is again,
watch that radar like a hawk. If you notice some hollow targets loitering around outside, be wary. if they are wanted, count on them engaging you. Theres 4 things you can do here:
a)
Maintain your docking course.
If you think it would actually be quicker to continue to dock than flee the area after a ship deploys hard points and starts to engage you go for the dock option. The station defenses MAY help if they scan the agressor but they
don’t always do this.
Make sure to
keep your speed under 100m/s. Don’t speed up over 100 m/s towards the slot in a panic. (More on why in a moment)
The distance you drop from the station when you arrive can play a role in this. Sometimes you land pretty close..others its a bit of a trek to the slot either around the side or even behind the station. To make sure you always land in front of the slot when you drop..
approach the station in SC with the planet it orbits DIRECTLY behind you on your Radar. The stations mail slot
ALWAYS points towards the planet it orbits. So if you do this, you will always drop pretty close and directly in front of the mail slot. When you drop, lock on, request docking and maintain a steady course to the slot. In general this is enough to get you to your destination in time 9 times out of 10.
In general, and especially at a CG,
hanging around outside the station is a bad time. In fact i would advise
never loiter outside the station at a CG. Period. You are more likely to be a target here than in most other times in Elite. Get in, drop off that bounty or cargo and get out. Always.
b) Leave and do something else in game for a while.
You don’t like the look of that wanted wing of 3 commanders and those 2 shieldless sidewinders suspiciously parked in front of the mail slot.
You spent the last hour at the CZ and don’t want to risk it because as you now know, they
don’t need a reason to kill you. They just will if they want to.
So, you say” hey, ok ill leave and try again later when its a bit more quiet” Maybe theres another station in system that you can re arm in and head back out to the CZ again.
(just make sure you don’t cash those bonds in the wrong station as it won’t count towards the CG then!)
c) Got heat sinks? Try Silent Running!
If you really want to be adventurous this is the most satisfying way at avoiding the Griefers at a exceptionally busy station. Yes you are exposed when your shields are down but you will be practically invisible. Fire up silent running before you get too close to the station for others to notice and make sure you have a heat sink or 2 ready!
d) Save and Exit to dock solo mode.
Maybe you decide to take it further by save and exiting and docking in solo mode. Thats a perfectly valid thing to do. If the difference between you taking part in an open CG is docking in solo mode now and then if you think it suits you better then do it! At least you are
trying to take part. While again, i don’t encourage this method, if you genuinely feel like you are not going to be able to dock without being torn up in front of the station by over zealous role playing traffic wardens , and theres nothing else you feel there is to do to pass the time until they leave - do this and don’t feel bad about it. Just make sure
you come back to open once you have dropped off that precious cargo!
2) Suicide Ramming / The Station Kills You.
You’ve noticed some wanted commander in a Federal Dropship loitering just outside the no fire zone move towards you as soon as you go to dock. You throttle up to try get closer to the station and the “safety” of the station defenses. They deploy hard points and start to fire on you. Your speed goes u to 98-99-100……101… and thats when you notice a shieldless eagle boosting right towards you.
Thud..the eagle rams against the hull -exploding.
Because you were going over 100m/s the game registers this as YOU rammed the eagle, causing its death. The station defenses that you were speeding towards are now the things that are seconds away from putting you right back to the rebuy screen, you are now wanted..the station notices you and within 3 seconds you are dead.
IMPORTANT
The eagle did not have to be wanted.
If you see a shieldless ship of ANY kind loitering outside a station, assume its a suicide rammer. Wanted or not. Make sure you do not go over 100 m/s. These guys are experts at this tactic and if they notice u are under 100 they won’t even bother you most likely. And if they do and decide to ram you anyway-killing themselves, so what? You don’t get a bounty and the station will not shoot you because you were not speeding. Job done.
Also, pay close attention if there are ships loitering outside that can launch ship launched fighters. Mainly;
Anaconda
Type 9
Federal Corvette
Imperial Cutter
Beluga
Gunship
Keelback
These can all have a
SLF lurking nearby and they are extremely effective at suicide ramming as they are very fast and hard to spot on the radar if you’re not looking for them. Any of the above named ships can have a condor fighter zipping around ramming unexpected commanders and
making said commanders wanted in the process- resulting in being vaporized by station defences.
Keep it under 100/ms and your never have to worry about it!
3) Straight up Ramming
Some “Griefers” are resting on literally billions and
do not care if they get wanted and risk death by ramming you and killing you.
The most common culprits fly Cutters. They are Fast, extremely heavy and
perfect for ramming smaller ships. Be wary of Cutters loitering outside stations, wanted or not
ESPECIALLY if you are in a ship thats a hauler class or light ship like an eagle, Viper or Cobra. Even heavier ships like the Federal Dropship can be affectively rammed to death under the right circumstances.
Avoiding ramming is not the easiest thing to do because its usually
completely unexpected. The best thing to do is lock onto the cutter/or ship you think is acting suspiciously and
note the distance on your hud its closing and how quickly. If its closing at a crazy speed..you know they are likely going for the ram and you can try do some evasive maneuvers, all the while moving towards the mail slot.
All in all however, if theres one thing to take away from all the above its this: You are NOT safe at stations. Especially at a CG, Be wary.

So thats it for todays update.
Now that we have some of the more basic things out of the way were going to start taking a deeper look at some other tactics in the next update.
As always guys, feel free to add, debate and share your own expereinces and
please try stay on topic.
Untill next time - Fly safe commanders o7
