For you, maybe. And for some others as well, maybe.

Personally I'm still having a blast.

Try giving No Man's Sky a spin for a month...it's a refreshing change to Elite, even if it's still not exactly a full deck of cards.

My daughter has the ps4 and is playing that very thing as we speak...been at it solid fer past month even though she was waiting fer this. Picked up deus ex yesterday fer a tenner. Just killing time although I stay away from here most evenings anyway cos Im playing something else until FD inspires me with something shiny. This is not that shiny and is more funny because its so predictable ^

Is it the recent Deus Ex? I got that for the PS4 and loved it, but somehow got distracted by something and stopped playing. Tempted to reset my save and give it another spin as I've just done with NMS.

Currently you grind for a cutscene. But!

So here's the idea:

Every time you encounter aliens there is a very low chance of them dropping very rare material. Once you've gathered enough of those you get a chance to have even more rare encounter cutscene!

Regular grinding is too simple! You must grind for a chance to grind!

watching the vid over and over there does seem to be a change from when the ship swoops in and when the ship changes to extract from the barnacles.

I'm wondering if they actually have a ship to go to war with or if it's just the scenes we get,

Now does anyone else see how much these artichoke ships resemble barnacles? Especially when the lower section is folded downward?
Fold the upper portion over the top, and I'd wager one looks just like the other.

Odds are these barnacles grow into these flying artichokes. That one was just "tending the nest".

Not a simple cut-scene .... how could FD have anticipated an "idiot" pilot would try to fly his ship through the beam ? :D

There is a real interaction with the beam, a puff of "smoke", the shields light up, and the pilot makes a brilliant recovery :)

So, if it's a cut-scene,, it has ways of interacting, which is more advanced from a programming perspective. There may be other ways to interact with these cut-scenes that have not yet been tried !

So far, nothing has generated a hostile response from the jelly ships.

I get it's a game...a game played for fun...but (putting on Cmdr helmet from non-combat career) why is the first response from some to shoot and ram the unknown ship. Or anything unknown? "Hmmm...I can't get a response from the object and I don't know what it's doing so I'd better open up on it."
"Why are the aliens always attacking us FD!?! Should be nerfed!"
And then we'll have complainers when they are slaughtered in their unshielded AspX's.
Ah well. Guess I better get some Shield Boosters going on my combat career FdL. :D

While the new cutscene looks awesome and is rather well done, I understand the sentiments of Verminstar and Sole Hunter, in that it's essentially just another "cutscene" with nothing new to add to the game in a gameplay sense. I can watch it from youtube and I've pretty much seen all there is to see. Sure I could fly over to a barnacle and wait around there for days, even mode switch like an addict in an effort to see it in person, but because it's a scripted uninteractive event it would just be the same as what I can see on youtube, just like the hyperdictions are too.

So while this is cool and it helps to explain the function of the barnacles, I agree it does nothing to change how I play the game at all. Just one more scene in the alien film story narrative that Frontier is slowly trickling out to us. I do believe all of these cutscenes are leading up to some actual game mechanics and content which players will someday be able to interact with, but it hasn't happened yet.

Exactly, I am not saying it doesn't look cool but it surely adds nothing of value to the already existing boring gameplay in term of storyline surrounding the aliens.

Sure it's mysterious but that's because there's literally no substance to it. Poor gameplay and story development is a recipe for a mediocre game.

Violently yanking? Meh, no worse than any regular NPC/CMDR with the right module. And yet, they did destroy any when they disabled them.

Yet.

Z...

In video game world you're right that no pew pew means no big deal. If you want to role play it or make it a bit more real, then yes hyperdicting you is extremely dangerous and a violent, hostile act. Systems coercion is a seriously violent and hostile act. And doing so without any comms from them means this is a militaristic endeavor.

They have invaded our galaxy with scouts and are establishing a base of operations somewhere to conduct a military operation.

It's not like it never happened before right? They obviously didn't have the same type of cutscene 6 months ago with no substantial gameplay.

Maybe in a year of selling banana skin for 12$ they'll get a boost in revenue and increase the cutscene to 20 sec.

I like the cut of your jib

People in this community are deluded if they think they will be allowed to choose their own destiny. If you think for one second the story about the aliens is going to be in-depth and complex you are very mistaken. Frontier has a reputation for making half-baked content and moving on from projects to projects.

If 2.4 is focused on the aliens, it's going to be a linear story without much freedom to interact with the aliens.

Not that it really bothers me to be honest but it won't make everybody happy.

I'm pretty new to the game, but after reading that it took 3 years to develop ship naming I'm under no illusions as to the depth of this possible mechanic. Multi crew is lame. Space legs sounds lame. Etc.

The space flight and space ship systems management is what is keeping me here. So hopefully the aliens offer some gameplay depth to this game. If not, then I'll probably head back to flight sims in another couple months.

And yeah, I'm not farming for a cutscene. Scarcity does add value, but I'll just watch YouTube

Watched on you tube.

Done: nothing more to see.

Definitly not my idea of gameplay...

By the way: I still have to be interdicted
