Sagittarius-Carina Mission - Route and camps

Verifying the Teleki Carina Neutron Belt

Today I arrived at Praei Bre WO-R d4-3 which is the reference system for the Teleki Carina Neutron Belt.

It is a neutron star system allright, but my scanning of the immediate area showed no more neutron stars to be found. Weird... could it be an error in the POI description in the Galactic Mapping Project?

With the help of EDSM I plotted all neutron stars within 2000 LY of my position.

This was the result (click image for larger version):

So clearly the reference system is wrong and will need updating - as there is no other neutrons in the immediate vicinity of the reference system, but instead a multitude of neutron stars located some 800 LY from my position and beyond.

So at first glance everything looks as it should - there is clearly a string of neutron stars to be found here... But what worries me is that this string is clearly aligned with the direction of travel for CMDRs going along the spiral arm. Could it be that there are many more neutron stars to be found here, and the Neutron Belt is merely a false artifact - simply the path of multiple CMDRs travelling through a cloud or layer of neutrons (thus generating the 'belt')?

It looks like scanning of the surrounding area for additional neutron stars not yet registered on EDSM is required to investigate this... If there is anyone out there who would like to assist in this task I could surely use the extra manpower :)

Beagle Point. Over a month since I left the bubble; going to Colonia, then SagA*, and finally straight out to here. It does feel like an accomplishment.

Getting here gives me great respect for the original pioneers: who had no engineered FSDs; who had no EDSM to chart their progress or EDDiscovery to plot routes; who had to find ways out through the empty spaces, and had no idea where the end was. I've believed for some time that it is the players in E: D who create the real and important content. Without the push or drive to go farther, see more, the game would just be a bunch of objects.

From here I have to decide my next destination. I'd like to start charting some unknown areas, and am trying to decide; input is welcome. I believe TomX and Corbin are in the Silentium area. I am considering either passing through Silentium to Viatori Patuit; or heading back across the Abyss, through the Abyssal Plain, and into Mare Desperationis.

Verifying the Teleki Carina Neutron Belt - findings

After the preliminary investigation described above, I flew to the system Essack NT-O d7-1, as it appeared to be central among the registered neutron stars. Once there, I started bookmarking all neutron stars registered in EDSM, starting with the ones closest to my position and working my way out from there. I ran out of bookmarks when I reached a radius of 7200 LY from Essack NT-O d7-1.

By that time the map of registered neutron stars looked like this:

At a search radius of 7200 LY, even some neutron stars within the Scutum-Centaurus Arm start showing up. Apart from these and a few other oddities, almost all registered neutron stars follow a snake-like pattern within the center of the Sagittarius-Carina Arm.

To verify that this pattern was real, and not just the result of travelling patterns of explorers going along the arm, I scanned for additional neutron stars along both edges of the existing 'snake'. This resulted in only three more neutron stars found - but all of them within the 'snake' - thus merely amplifying the pattern. Finally I scanned a cross section from Sagittarius-Carina through the Abyss and towards the registered neutron stars in the Scutum-Centaurus Arm. This did not reveal any additional neutrons.

While the search pattern shown here does not rule out the possibility that there are many additional neutron stars to be found out there, it does lend support to the idea that neutron stars at the tip of the Sagittarius-Carina Arm are almost exclusively found within the center of the spiral arm. Almost no neutron stars are found along the outer edges of the arm, or within the regions between the spiral arms. It would be very interesting to know if this patterns only exists here, or if it is a general feature of the outer spiral arms. We allready know that the pattern is broken closer to the core, where the vast neutron fields are found above and below the galactic plane. Here the neutrons are located quite close to the galactic plane - generally between 30 LY above and 250 LY below it.

The map revealed that allthough there is a snake-like pattern, it is broken up on several locations. This leads me to suggest the following two reference systems as the ones that indicate the ´head´ and ´tail´ of the central part of the Teleki Carina Neutron Belt. These two systems are slightly more than 3000 LY apart.

If anyone has knowledge of neutron distribution in other areas close to the galactic rim, I would love to hear from you.

I wasn't looking for them particularly so it's not anything conclusive, but on my trip round the outside edge I think I found 3. One did have an ELW though :)

Only 3 neutron stars during an entire circumnavigation along the outer rim? Id say that lends support to the hypothesis that very few are found out there ;)

Good to hear of your travels in Silentium

I found it an interesting area to traverse - there are few nebulae, but still seemed to contain an above average number of water worlds, my elw finding was as usual a rather low rate. (Of course it's possible that we found the same ones!)

The feeling of Silence and distance from the core is also something special - as you say only the Sag-Carinii expedtion seems to have traversed it in any great detail.

At one point having gone out the edge of the rim (there were a few systems in edsm beyond me but I couldn't work out how to reach them - even in my trusty Katie - 56ly engineered conda - I'm guessing they were triangulated), however when I decided to work out a return course even with 1kly "jumps" edsm only had my route out there to work on:)!

I've completed my swing in toward the core and now back out on the edge in Viatori Patuit, literally "rarely visited," feels very much like Silentium in many ways - I'm stocking up on jumponium before atempting to reach a system, Plooe chruia pn-b d13-0 (is there a reason why it's ALWAYS d13-0:)?) that was given to me by a fuelrat actually it was one fuel rat playing an april fool on the rest of us on the 1st april, but when set a challenge... :))

I haven't noticed any particular concentration of neutron stars out near the galactic rim, none obviously near to where I am at the moment but will keep my eyes peeled on the way back to Newet.

In the meantime - a tight squeeze:

When do you expect to reach Newet?

Im currently landed at Don Quijote so Newet is my next destination...

Making my way back in from the rim, although been delayed by building a new computer (at last! Currently loving it!). Have some irl stuff on this week but probably aiming to get there on Saturday, should be there by the evening if all goes to plan - would be great to do a meetup! Great to know For some reason I thought you were going anticlockwise!

Fly safe!

Fly safe!

So made it back heading to Muntasir and its assorted neutrons, found an earth like:

Whilst there filled my jumpoinium stocks back up at Muntasir depot, ready for the next time I find myself in a sparse starfield.

Finally landed at Newet tonight, the topography seems to have changed slightly - it's a purple planet and the landing site is in a crater with a mountain on one side and on the other a small bit of flat land before another crater. I've landed on that flat bit. Mount Macqet is still there though although it looks like a tough SRV climb - not sure I'm going to risk it.

Going to be busy the next few days and the keyboard (of all things) on my new computer is playing up. Let me know if you're around.

After almost two weeks parked at Beagle Point, I decided it was time to get going. I headed due galactic west in the Void until the edge of the jumpable star range, and then turned south to follow the extreme edge of the Abyss. Nothing of interest, just a lot of cold space and small stars. I've finally reached the beginning of the Abyssal Plain and will now turn west and begin charting sectors that have been previously undiscovered. Looking at my map in EDDiscovery, there are large gaps where no one has gone through, so my work is cut out for me....

Corbin Moran, I have some news for you. The Thargoids have returned.

That is good to know! I have yet to encounter any unknown artifacts/probes/ships/barnacles this far from civilized space... If our paths should cross I hope they are friendly - Im not exactly flying in a combat capable ship...

This is a new incentive to get my foot down and get back to the bubble.

Ill continue my slow and steady pace. The Sagittarius-Carina Missiom has been my thing for almost two years now and Im not gonna rush back to the bubble. Please don´t make the aliens angry... I would hate to return to a heap of smouldering ashes... ;)

Still at Newet and likely to be there a few more days - let me know if you're passing

Glad to hear you are still out there and there will be a safe place if needed.

Yep, got that. Do you mean running away from the Thargoids? I know this is OT but I'm annoyed I don't get the joke and want to work out how I'm being so dense :D

Yeah, I meant I will be the gingerbread man to the thargoids and run as fast as I can. Whether you're being dense or I'm being obtuse, who knows?
