My visit to Frontier Developments and the Future of the Game

The most overused, pointless phrase we hear these days from every game dev or fanboy/girl...
"Wait & see"
Same old industry speak which leaves us (suckers oops i mean customers) with nothing but promised hype.
So nothing to see, move along plz. Its not like people have been waiting for years for more info... oh wait.

With all the tea they've been drinking and the biscuits they've been eating...

...they must be very well fueled and productive. ;)

Speaking of which: Wasn't there a holiday weekend they ended up working through a year or two ago to get out an update, or some such?!

I had nearly forgotten about that.

I was just going off of the last several major release patches, which have been pretty consistently spread 6 months apart. Even if 2.4 is close, I imagine the core gameplay improvements after that will be quite a ways off. At the very least, 6 months from now.

Even allowing for that gap (& 2.2 was only 4 months after 2.1), we had 2.3 at the end of April, which would mean 2.4 in September. Of course, 2.3 was delayed by 2-3 weeks due to issues with the Mutli-crew Beta, so I think we could see 2.4 anytime around August or September.

Thanks to those who shared their experience at Frontier - I like what I'm hearing so far.

I also just wanted to mention two things:

First - smarter AI is something that I would welcome.

Second - I have not watched everything that Obsidian Ant has put up on his channel, nor have I read every post he has ever made, but he has never struck me as someone who is prone to exaggeration, or even minor embellishment. That bears some consideration, I think, in regards to his level of excitement for what is coming.

That's about the most negative comment I have seen you post (and you have plunged some deep depths), presumably triggered by the absence of negative values in the thread title. I congratulate you on your attempts to achieve further 'balancing' of the positive vibes ! Must have been a huge personal effort. Can't wait to see what you come up with next : it will be highly entertaining.

I would want to see the giant FD spreadsheet with the thousand nonsense engineering collectible items they made up one lunchtime. You know: Worn platinum hip replacement divots; iced Uranium wotsit wits; multiple doodah techy wombles; wooah missus! cxackonium minky foofahs.. You get the idea..

I haven't ignored them, they just haven't said very much. And to clarify it for you, that very important point is the source of my and many other's negativity towards Elite right now: the unknown future, the lack of communication, the veil of secrecy. It's very hard to get excited for, let alone buy DLC for, a game which has no planned future or known upcoming content, let alone broken/anemic game mechanics which have little to no communication on solutions for them.

I think it's nice that Frontier invited a group of players to their offices, I really do, but that does not do much to address the core of the problem, which is a lack of communication on the game's future and development. And while E3 will apparently tell us a bit about 2.4, and then we'll later find out a little bit more about 2.4 at some other event, none of that will do much of anything to inform the community about the pressing topics that these forums see post after post about day in and day out. The toxicity has become overwhelming, and it is largely due to a lack of communication on Frontier's part. I do not doubt that many of Frontier's employees are passionate about the game, but so are the players, and this policy of silence and secrecy is doing a lot to kill the player's passions right now.

I'm still paying attention because I love the franchise, and whether or not I ever start playing regularly again depends entirely upon Frontier's future development, but how many won't bother to wait? How many will leave due to lost hope? Ant's video is great as his vids always are, but it's content is the same as every other communication from Frontier: an announcement of a future announcement. Stay tuned for more info! Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel!!!!! No ETA's, no guarantees.

This sums it up for me. Rep.

Panticus is the textbook definition of a vile troll. Its clear he hates the game & everything about it-yet he still spends hours of his time posting in these forums. I mean, seriously? How pathetic. Does this guy truly have nothing better to do with his life?!?!

100 people working at FD on Elite? Clearly creativity is not an additive quantity.

I just posted a video about this, but not everyone watches those - so I thought I would post here as well. Earlier this week I got invited to the Frontier offices along with a few others - it was a bit of a surprise, but Frontier wanted us to come along and record a couple of lines of dialogue for them to use in-game. Kinda like little cameo things. :) All pretty exciting stuff! Whilst there though, we were lucky enough to get a tour of the offices, and got to saw a bunch of upcoming content - mostly 2.4 related. I'm not allowed to talk about what we saw, as it is covered by NDA, but I do want to talk about my impressions of Frontier and what is going on with the game.

So - the offices are really big, that was the first thing that hit me. The second thing was all the Elite Dangerous memorabilia everywhere, from ship models to cushions to wall hangings of posters (to big to fit in even the largest room of my house). There was also stuff from other Frontier games. Those guys certainly love the projects they work on, and are very proud of them!

It's often questioned how many people work on Elite, well there were two full open plan offices - and it appeared a huge amount of the staff were dedicated to working on Elite. Numbers for Elite were easily in the region of 100+. The content we got to see was very impressive, and I think people are going to like it a lot. Most of what we saw, people will probably get to see from Frontier at E3.

There's been some worry that 2.4 is going to be a small patch, I think that concern came from the announcement that 2.4 is going to be released in sections. From what I saw, it appeared that 2.4 is going to be at least as big as all the other patches, and it certainly isn't the end of the main development of the game.

Another thing that I know has been concerning people is Frontier's talk about working on the "core mechanics" of the game after 2.4. Some people feel this means the game is going into maintenance mode with Frontier simply working on bug fixes and minor changes. We got the chance to ask for clarification on this - and the "core mechanic" changes actually means that Frontier are going to flesh out existing game mechanics and give the developers the opportunity to bring these aspects of the game inline with the original concepts as well as to perhaps add further enhancements where they can. So it seems that this is going to be big deal stuff, rather than just small tweaks.

Another thing I've seen people wonder about, is whether or not there will be new features in the future updates. Good news is that there will still be new content added to the game along with new headline features. However Frontier are not willing to talk about what that stuff is just yet.

We still don't know what the new sales model for the game will be. Frontier aren't talking on that one - but it won't be a season pass.

Bottom line; there is a huge team working on the game. Frontier are committed to the game's future, and are not winding the project down in any way, shape or form. They are aware that the game isn't perfect, and there is a strong desire within the team to add new depth to the game, and improve upon existing mechanics. What this ultimately means for the gameplay I don't know, but whatever the case - things are not going to remain static, and improvements are coming.

So, yeah - it's not as bleak as people have been imagining that's for sure. A lot of good stuff on the way. :)

Here's the video for anyone that wants to watch it:

Just wanted to add, what a great bunch people people work at Frontier! Very passionate about the game, and extremely friendly! It was nice to meet everyone, Ed, Zac, Sandro, Jonny, David, Dav, Sally and so many others. :)

Because having a person who's very vocal on youtube about the game isn't at all an opportunity to manipulate what that person sees in the hope they report back favorably.... I'm sure the queen totally thinks that every place she goes it's 100% clean, fresh flowers, best suits, freshly mowed lawns, manicured hedges and no dogsh** on the footpaths the other 364 days she isn't there....

Just the usual attempt by FD to influence a few people in the community they perceive as important or worth making some effort with.

How about FD stops selecting elements of the community to put on pillars and or support with special treatment? Any form of bias and/or preferential treatment of the player base is not a good idea and reeks of FD naivety and desperation.

The initial concept of tiered support for the player base (based on popularity and ability to promote the product) was and is terrible. "Triple elite player groups" ... the concept is cringeworthy and has proven to be a complete joke.

Separating player groups into tiers, separating "FD affiliates" into tiers and now individuals getting special treatment from the company...

Just learn the basics of how to communicate with your player base effectively FD.

Haven't read all of this thread, but did FD say anything about LXP owners and if this new sales model will affect them?

It's all very well saying that FD will honour the LXP, but FD certainly don't help themselves when they make a comment about a new sales model. This kind of comment, with no clarfication (as usual), leaves some LXP owners scratching their heads wondering if FD are toying with the idea of reneging on it. Some clarification would be useful now, not later. :)

If FDev reneges on the LXP they will be subject to a lawsuit, on that I promise.

It is really useless to try to reassure the community in this way. If the game really has a future, they must show us what it is.
Facts, not bulls.

Those guys are doing an informative work, for me it's no different than if they had invited journalist except I think OA and others know the game better and are doing better job talking about it than most journalists.

You do not think that an unbiased journalist would be better?

If it was not for the fact that FD plied those that visited the offices with ingame prizes & special treatment then i would be far more open minded about this stuff.

A journalist that did not mention they received a gift for a good review would be frowned upon so i'm glad that OA and the others at least admit that they received gifts too.
