Rubbish... The Thargoids have returned, and yes, you should be very afraid

I havent seen a feature list of 2.4, but i have seen a video by David Braben, where he talks about, that we have to learn about the aliens first. For me, this sounds very promising and regardless, it is far to early to complain or to rant. Looking forward to 2.4.... a lot!

So we're being goaded to war on the forums by FD. Seems like the notion that the way we interact with our Thargoid friends is not 'up to us' after all.

There is no gameplay in friendly action, gameplay that FD so desperatly need.

So it seems to be war, and that's been decided by our coding masters.

Shame.

What´s your approach? Handing them some exploration data? Impress with space- (performance enhancers)? Motrona experience jelly-trading? :)

There's a little X you can click at the bottom right of the announcement pane, it'll hide that global notice/announcement. :p

When using the "Blackout" forum skin (in Chrome) this X not visible. That is, until you highlight the page :p

Maybe it's connected to some sort of new karma system? :D
Punishment for all who are playing the bad guys?

Just hit the brakes for a moment.
You don't know that.
Wait and see what happens.

I've always wondered why we don't have the ability to collect soil samples on distant planets when we land. If we do, I must have missed it. I know we can mine for minerals and such. I'm talking about core samples.

We don't, but see my exploration suggestion thread for such a proposal on soil samples:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...loration-Development-a-Galaxy-of-Possibilitie

  • SRV MkII (The Rhino) – This is a new, slower but slightly larger version of the Scarab, with a weaker main turret but much more cargo space. The MkII also carries a surface drill rig which can be used for various things, like surface ore mining, and collecting surface core samples!
  • Surface Core Samples – These are rare random locations found with in conjunction with the SRV scanner and heatmaps which allow the commander to use the drill rig on the SRV MkII to drill through the surface and collect a planet core sample, which takes 1T of cargo rack space and can be flown back to civilization and sold for large credit values. Again the cores increase in value with distance from SOL. The new DSS heatmaps can be used to locate areas on planets with the best chances of finding surface core spots, but much SRV searching will still be required to find them. In general though they will procedurally spawn around areas of increased surface terrain geometry, like large canyon or mountain networks or inside craters.

Hahaha oh whats that noise.....Ahh its the sound of everyone at FDHQ face-desking at the same time

Whinge about the thargoid cutscenes for having no "interaction".
Whinge that interaction is coming with them now.
Whinge than we are being "forced" in to it when we still really have no idea just how it'll work.
Whinge from the hippy crowd that the doors wont open to a conga of carebears offering cocktails.

Poor FD, ya cant win chaps!

I for one welcome the idea of an actual challenge within the realms of PVE and will be returning to Elite for its release.

Carry on with the FD suck because *insert 1st world problem here* chaps.

Not sure what kind of friendly action there could be, trade? Rares maybe? You're right, not a lot of gameplay in that... ;)

Thargoid babies? well joke aside, a lot of game play could be made on a friendly basis.
Collect intel on our fellow humans and give/sell it to the Thargoids.

Transport or smuggle stuff for the Thargoids, there is a lot one could do if you switch on the brain :D

Selling secrets to hostile aliens is not friendly...

Since when does "you should be very afraid" mean that it's necessarily going to be a war?

Or more generally, since when do one-liners from the marketing hype brigade mean anything at all ?;)
Can't believe we're still falling for that.

I think that after 2.4 The Return, next patch 2.4 will be called The End. After Thargoids wiped whole humanity and players Elite Dangerous is closed once and for all!

The base game can barely support activities beyond combat in the first place, so it's kind of hard to expect that an encounter with Thargoids would have any meaningful content outside of shoot 'em up. Where's the framework required for something more substantial?

I'm hoping that the BGS will be reworked/extended into a war-based model, so that instead of systems being contested by factions, they will be contested by humans and Thargoids. The extent to which either side influences a system determines how likely you are to encounter Thargoid threats there. This influence would be military - blowing up enemy ships or bases - or logistic - completing missions for the various navies or supplying goods which are in short supply. The more of those things we do, the stronger our influence. This influence would be shown on the galaxy map (shades of green for us, red for them, for example) so we can easily see the battle-lines, and where our help - military or logistic - is needed. Those who want pew pew pew can patrol the front line; those who want some risk can do supply runs to the front line; those wanting a quiet life can operate further back. Certain commodities needed for the war effort can be manufactured (read: appear from thin air), mined or collected from planet surfaces deep in safe territory, and need to be traded from safe to relatively safe to dangerous systems, forming supply lines.

Not quite sure how exploration would fit, but then exploration has always been its own thing really as you tend to be too far away for much interaction. However, maybe spying on enemy movements, mapping the extent of their influence, or searching for rarer but more useful (read: influential) materials and bringing them to deep space supply hubs where they can be taken back to the bubble and eventually the front line.

Something like that would hopefully have some appeal for everyone.

Forum Salt could never be a Rare Commodity, judging from the posts I've seen today. That & Forum Whine are in huge supply it would seem......& all based on assumptions, rather than facts.

I bet you miss the 2.4 stream announcement where thargoid blew up 2 capital ships and a bunch of ships for no reason ?

The war is needed for the community to understand it is a cutthroat galaxy.

Only more grind and RNGneers should be avoided.
