Rubbish... The Thargoids have returned, and yes, you should be very afraid

I'm sure the Thargoids also have a low-brow element in their species, that they also are ashamed of. Maybe these are the only ones that we are seeing so far.

My take on it is that the thargoid have war in mind , maybe just with the feds at first.
What happens from there might be up to us.

For example say the thargoid shoot first at federal only systems maybe we will have options on how we play.

The issue is however given that FD are going for a actualy ''alien'' alien race communication might be hard.
It was my understanding , but I could be wrong that they can't tell the difference between different human factions , but maybe that has changed.

My guess is at the moment it might just be a big CG with more bells and whistles with multiple sides.

Maybe one side is defending a federation ship , but at the same time a someone else is trying to open communication. the two CGs would be races and the first to finish would be what determines the outcome.

Or another way could be the first 100 or even 1000 players to meet them in 2.4 determine the thargoids outlook. if more than 50% shoot at them they become hostile.

I understand the drama on this however , its upsetting.
But the way I see it , is that if it does play out in a linear path at least it will be universe changing (I hope) and serve as good ''high level content''

I was under the impression this was going to be player driven. How we reacted to the aliens was going to drive the story forward? Have we had a conflict?

Perhaps we will have a double CG ..... ship biowaste to Planetary port X if you want peace with the aliens ..... ship reactive armor and weapons to port Y if you want war.

Conflict? Didn't you see the video where HP and *ONLY* HP's ship was invulnerable to the thargoid sleep ray and the first thing he did was shoot it? (I just don't understand why it's always him and not one of the other alleged million players who gets a game with actual excitement in it?)

If that first contact was to dictate the path of the game, potentially towards peace, then I'm afraid that ship has already sailed.

So we're meeting the Thargoid's version of greifers and trolls just like they're meeting ours? I love it :D

Frontier has always been more focused on combat than other aspects of the game. All you need do is listen to Ed's own words from the livestream tonight, timestamp 35:00:

Ed Lewis said:
You are going to be fighting Thargoids, now if you don't think that's exciting then....I'm not sure, what is.

I don't think Frontier can imagine any other way to interact with the Thargoids than to have open war and more combat. Us non-combat Elite players are just along for the ride and left out in the cold of winter, most likely.

Exactly. People have been shooting at them and stealing their stuff since day one. But lo and behold, it wasn't our fault. No sir. We had no chance. Its FDs fault. Or griefers, probably.

"But I didn't shoot them, I wish this game was offline!"
"What else could I have done but shoot them!"
"FD forced us!"

I mean, who would have thought it? A game pitched as a remake of a game where you shoot alien ships in the face ad nauseum would feature aliens to be shot in the face? Its so weird. Noone ever saw this coming during the KS. And where did this combat come from? Its not as if combat played a major role in the original? Or in the trailers? Where did this sudden 'combat and aliens' thing in an Elite gam come from? Why wont FD make sense? Heck, what is next? Will they have us fly spaceships? Bring stuff from A to B? Upgrade our ship?

:D

Well time for Missions for the Thargoids to earn back the lost rep for the Meta Alloys I stole for Farseer and UAs I broke to bribe Prof Palin

I wonder if they will be interested in Soontil Relics...

Probably not all conflict, expect some "rogue" Thargoid engineers to pop up, willing to trade materials for Thargoid tech. Heck the base reveal in the "unknown" trailer was probably one such base.

Or, maybe the universe doesn't revolve around commanders, and that the outcomes are simply down to interaction?

The assumption that the game will forever be locked in everywhere being essentially safe, is probably an unwise expectation. I don't expect Frontier to upend the entire player base either; but I do expect them to make our equal, and likely better, a force to be reckoned with. The flower people are back and they have very cool ships that are rather good at knocking ours out. So I suspect interaction will be down to us, along with the result (to an extent); but I don't think frontier can afford to make this at most an existential threat.

They are coming. I'd probably think about being prepared. :)

Look, I think there's probably a hint in Ed's comments, that perhaps how we engage with the flower people is essentially mirrored; go in guns blazing and you best be prepared and have a plan (or plenty of rebuy). But it could be that they are periodic events that simply reflect player action - don't shoot? they don't shoot.

Maybe. It's too early to tell. But I firmly believe they are going to be a forced to be reckoned with and really do need to be. That does not mean one may be forced to fight; but I don't think we're going to get a say on if we can 'opt out'. You don't get to opt out of this one.. they are the counterpoint to humanity.

A very slight subtle hint, maybe, but Ed was pretty crystal clear in communicating that there will be lots of combat against the Thargoids, with new weapons and tactics and group play needed. If the Thargoid interactions will be truly dynamic and player influenced on a per encounter basis then yeah that would be awesome, allowing peaceful players to be friendly and avoid combat with them. If that is the case though then Ed sure did not make it anywhere even close to as clear as he made the combat aspect of 2.4.

The Thargoids have returned, and yes, you should be very afraid...

So we're being goaded to war on the forums by FD. Seems like the notion that the way we interact with our Thargoid friends is not 'up to us' after all.

There is no gameplay in friendly action, gameplay that FD so desperatly need.

So it seems to be war, and that's been decided by our coding masters.

Shame.

There's a little X you can click at the bottom right of the announcement pane, it'll hide that global notice/announcement. :p

What did you expect? This isn't Alan Titchmarsh Gardening Simulator. Seriously, what did you expect?

That still doesn't change the fact that we are highly doubtful that you have any alternatives to a war scenario prepared. Personally I think that it was naive for anyone to think it wouldn't lead to fighting. But to say that it is up to how we interact with them when we all kinda know that it is going to lead to fighting no matter what is kind of a lie I think. And I think that's also what OP was trying to express as well.

Not sure what kind of friendly action there could be, trade? Rares maybe? You're right, not a lot of gameplay in that... ;)

first encounters with an alien civilization could be scientific in nature. Seems to be plenty commanders out there who would jump (pun) at the chance to go study these things in a less hostile manner, not assuming they are there to kill us because (gulp) they are "aliens".

I've always wondered why we don't have the ability to collect soil samples on distant planets when we land. If we do, I must have missed it. I know we can mine for minerals and such. I'm talking about core samples.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I dunno - wasn't it always kind of assumed that when they showed up the fur would fly? I personally never got the impression that diplomacy was a real option with them, at least from the current lore. Not saying it wouldn't be interesting, just that it really wasn't something that has been telegraphed at all.
