To distract myself from the "long winter" between now and June 27th, I fired up Elder Scrolls Online. I've received many hours of enjoyment from this game, and Skyrim before it. However, right now it just feels kinda "boring."
I don't blame the game. It's an amazing game with tons of things to do and places to explore. I've maybe explored half of Tamriel and 5% of Cyrodiil, so there's plenty of things left to see. However, as unique as missions are, they do get repetitive. Is this the fault of the game? Perhaps.. But ESO has amazing voice acting and decent storylines, so it's hard to blame the game. I'm just not feeling it right now.
All this is to say that I expect someday to experience the same thing with Elite Dangerous. I'm totally okay with this. As long as I get my money's worth out of the game, I'll have no complaints. I just spent $12 USD for "The Martian" on BluRay. I got 2.5 hours of entertainment out of the experience, perhaps 5 if I watch it again someday. Based on this math, if I get 12.5 hours of enjoyment out of ED, I'll have gotten my money's worth. I expect to get at least 125 hours of enjoyment, if not much more.
One of the things I plan to do is take my time and really experience my firsts. I'm in no rush to "level up" - as I've said before, it's about the journey, not the destination.
I post this to "swim against the current" of the (in my opinion) ridiculous attitude I see from long-time players who trash ED because after three years of gameplay, they are bored with it. If I just get three months of enjoyment out of ED, it will have earned my praise.
