General / Off-Topic Everything Becomes Boring

To distract myself from the "long winter" between now and June 27th, I fired up Elder Scrolls Online. I've received many hours of enjoyment from this game, and Skyrim before it. However, right now it just feels kinda "boring."

I don't blame the game. It's an amazing game with tons of things to do and places to explore. I've maybe explored half of Tamriel and 5% of Cyrodiil, so there's plenty of things left to see. However, as unique as missions are, they do get repetitive. Is this the fault of the game? Perhaps.. But ESO has amazing voice acting and decent storylines, so it's hard to blame the game. I'm just not feeling it right now.

All this is to say that I expect someday to experience the same thing with Elite Dangerous. I'm totally okay with this. As long as I get my money's worth out of the game, I'll have no complaints. I just spent $12 USD for "The Martian" on BluRay. I got 2.5 hours of entertainment out of the experience, perhaps 5 if I watch it again someday. Based on this math, if I get 12.5 hours of enjoyment out of ED, I'll have gotten my money's worth. I expect to get at least 125 hours of enjoyment, if not much more.

One of the things I plan to do is take my time and really experience my firsts. I'm in no rush to "level up" - as I've said before, it's about the journey, not the destination.

I post this to "swim against the current" of the (in my opinion) ridiculous attitude I see from long-time players who trash ED because after three years of gameplay, they are bored with it. If I just get three months of enjoyment out of ED, it will have earned my praise.

I have a friend of mine who will be playing this as well when it launches. I made sure to tell him that this is a sandbox sim. There is no hand holding and you are left for the most part to create your own game play. This game can be as boring as you let it be or as fun as you want it to be. This type of gameplay puts 90% of it in the players hands. To many games hold your hands today. They are all on rails and there is only one main course to follow. If people come to ED looking for that then they will not enjoy themselves at all. Here you need to get into character and live the game. Then it is a blast.

Hello to you!

It is a good way to play ED not to rush. ED is no typical MMO and has no quests or prefabricated content or Story-Lines like other games. The story, that happens in ED is community-driven by Community-goals or other events.

also there is no End-Game. It continues. Its like in reality. You yourself set goals an achieve them.
you have total freedom, what you want to do or achieve.

i recommend, that you try to find a clan or community, that suits you style of gameplay or opinion. It is more fun hanging arround in a voicechat with other players while playing. I know what I am talking about. I play since release December 2014, with over 3500 hours of gameplay.

I love ESO. I'm making an assassin. Have all the traits ready to research, have the motif, have the doom wolf, and its pup... Yee.

ESO is my favourite MMO. I'm not playing atm because of Elite Dangerous coming up and because I'm saving money to buy both Horizons and Morrowind but I think you're suffering from burnout. It happens to anyone who plays MMOs(I have +500 hours in Warframe and I've not played it in 3 months)

I used ESO as an example because it's my favorite MMO, too :D The idea is that if one can get bored playing the best game out there, then it isn't the developer's fault when we get bored. Too many people on this forum blame FDev when they get bored with ED, but I'm saying, "It happens, that's life!" Even pizza & ice cream get boring after awhile (a long, long, long while).

We just have to change things up from time-to-time. When I get bored with ED, that will probably mean I'm ready to go back to ESO to continue leveling my beautiful Nord Battlemage [heart]

Like any game, the novelty will wore off eventually and Elite Dangerous is no different.
Altough we'll inevitably get bored, sooner or later, i think what differentiates this game from the rest is the journey itself.
Elite doesn't lie on heavy scripted quests, filled with cut-scenes. You don't follow the usual claustrofobic corridor type path, going from point A to point B, to achieve your goals.
Elite offers you much more than that. Theres a bunch of activities you can engage with.
I'm most certainly, that sometimes you'll be probably heading towards an objective and you will see something that catchs your eye. You will probably diverge from your predesignated flight path and explore/investigate. Now, imagine that, with a couple of buddys as wingmans, chatting through comms, having a laugh and enjoying the experience. That's why i think this game is kinda unique in a sense, which is something other games already tried and failed. For me, personally, it's all about the journey.

Now, i'm not saying i will not eventually get bored, cause one can only land on so many look-alike lifeless planets with copy-paste space stations, rocks and whatnot, or try the finite number of missions and activities, but i will not be rushing through the game. I wanna take my sweet time with it, discovering stuff on my own and having fun allong the way.

That day will surely come but, until then, i'm pretty sure we'll get enough bang from our buck. ;)

I find ridiculous people blaming the devs because they're bored with the game. Maybe you're bored because burnout from spending +1000 hours in a game which happened to me on WoW during Cata.
If you're bored because you experienced everything the game has, it's your fault that you're bored not the game.
Rant over and now, sports.

Vanilla WoW.. Naxx... Burnt alot of time in there....

Since ED is open-ended, create a bucket list, that will keep things interesting.

I also recommend when you see Old Duck.... Bump into him... To keep him interested :) :O

BoS: #1 Old Duck

English isn't my first language so I'll make mistakes and I was meaning to call out the people who spend +1000 hours in the game and blame FD for getting bored.

I've put about 1000 hours into the PC version over the two years I was playing it, and never once felt bored.

I cleared my save a number of times (ie starting from scratch), to try different play styles, and role play differently. Never got into combat, basically doing nothing but missions, and system surveys.

Spent a fair bit on skins, and also a lifetime expansion pass - if I ever decide to build a gaming PC, that will be handy :), as well as the HOTAS - a quick calculation would come to around 65 cents per hour played - pretty cheap entertainment.

The kind of fun I had was for things like learning how to use the gravitational fields of planets, etc, to maintain supercruise speeds, rather than the gravity well causing my speed to drop. Never used a docking system, to learn how to use visual indicators that I was in the right spot for a vertical descent to the pad. As a cargo hauler, using defensive firepower (ECM, chaff, and mines) to prevent attacking ships from getting a decent bead on me.

There are many players for whom, the game is all about being triple elite (quadruple if you count Arena play), have a maximally kitted out version of every ship available, being top ranked in all factions, having billions in credit. When they get there, "it's boring". That's not my style, so on launch day, I'll just pootle along, doing what I want to do, keep a low profile, and be a space pilot.

I don't think I will ever get bored with Elite and trying for the Platinum trophy will give me a lot to do in the game. I also know some of the big titles coming to PS4 will pull me off of Elite! I will always have Elite to go back to after I finish them.

That's what I did, and here I am two and a half years later and 1700 hours + of game time and I'm not bored yet :)

I started playing ESO a couple of weeks ago, my character is level 20 so I'm still very much a noob.

I'm enjoying it so far but I agree about the quests, they are quite simplistic and linear despite the high production values. The opening newbie quest is one of the worst culprits, an IQ of around 20 is needed to follow it. After a while I jumped ship (literally) and started exploring/dungeon crawling instead.

The grindwall to get the best PVP gear looks more severe than the engineers!

Human minds need change. There is a state of current progress in your head and once you chose to move on to the next task, the previous task will become boring.
It is like writing over your newly constructed mind structure with the old stuff again. Not fun to start over with something that you already done. Especially if the new stuff was more shiny.

This comment alone makes me more excited than anything to finally experience my very own ED journey on the 27th, I've been following it since the very beginning but never had a good enough PC (or owned an XB1) to play it myself. I've been replaying Skyrim the last few days and honestly it does feel so hand-holdy, it's more of a big, beautiful checklist than a game, but my God, ED is going to be quite the opposite experience, I can't wait!
