Youtuber Kornelius Briedis seems to have had it with Fdevs

In today’s video game industry, youtube most definitely matters. A positive presence on streaming media is extremely beneficial for game studios, as it’s free yet effective marketing that greatly helps generate hype and sales. People like Kornelius, Scott Manly, and Ant have helped Elite sell copies, a lot. Frontier knows this too, it’s why they have the CTRL ALT SPACE competitions and it’s why they put youtube streamer videos directly into their own newsletters, or name stations in the game after youtubers and such.

Sure anyone with a mic can be a youtuber, but not necessarily a successful youtuber with thousands of subscribers and regular followers. Big difference there, and to be honest Kornelius was a very successful Elite youtuber who had a positive impact on the game’s community. Losing him is a big deal, make no mistake about it.

Cant rep you again but 100% agree. :)

It really isn't. It might look like it from your position, but externally, it really isn't. Even if he is personally responsible for selling a thousand copies, that's still not a big deal.

I'll wager that over 90% of players would respond to his name with a 'who'?

I wondered what happened to him as I enjoyed his videos. Seems he has given up on the game due to many bad designs. It's a real shame. Fdev, you need to wake up.

I think he will return with season 3.
I too hope that season 3 adds some cool stuff to core gameplay.
I am currently on an Elite break myself.
Breaks are unavoidable.
No one can play the same game for thousands of hour on end and there are so many other games I want to enjoy too.

Head meet nail. Pretty much. Plenty of comments on how FD should "add more depth" "focus on X" or whatever, but when you get down to it, everyone has their own ideas of what FD should focus on.
.

which is why my default view is if in doubt go back to the DDF. FD already have an entire bucketful of great mechanics AND are already signed off by the devs as being features they want in the game.

We do not need to remake the wheel, just remind FD that 3 years ago they mapped out a pretty phenomenal game in great detail, and perhaps they should be looking at that before listening to the mindless masses on here. (esp considering the £1000s that was spent by the most dedicated Elite players to help get said list created)

I'd personally prefer FD to not listen to all the people talking about adding more depth or refining existing systems and go full out on getting atmosphere worlds done and adding life to planets, EVEN if there was no strong gameplay attached. But i'm probably in a minority here.

So, ill just continue to play the game and enjoy what is there, rather than worrying about what isn't, and leave FD to do their job.

I agree mostly, although I do not mind FD turning their gaze towards core gameplay in the next season, or whatever it will be called.
The problem is... what actually is core gameplay?
I am afraid that many will be disappointed, because they have disparate views of what that entails.

Whatever FD does the whining will go on. Of that I am sure.

Yeah pretty much. I don't want them to listen to my dumb ideas. I want them to execute their own ideas which they described in detail once upon a time, and make the game that they said they were going to make.

Me too, and as far as I am aware that is still what they are doing. What many people fail to realise is that many of the ideas will take years of development, not months.

Especially as the last year had some pretty decent games come out. I know I'll be taking a break when Bannerlord comes out..

So why have I never heard of him? And how did the game industry ever make it this far without YouTube, which started in 2005?

Advertising is the toilet industry. We don't need, we don't want half-page, full-audio-visual streaming commercials on every page we try to visit. The internet would be more than 300% faster for even the slowest connections if there was no advertising on it at all. And internet advertising is one of the largest sources of internet based scams and malware propagation out there. It is a regular practice to "steal" an ad from an ad server, inject it with a buffer overrun exploit, and reinsert it into an ad-server. And the next thing you know, you're looking at one of these:

Computer-system-infection.com-malware.jpg

Garbage, pure garbage.

And I didn't buy Elite because of what someone on some second-rate web site had to say. I bought it based on what I read at https://www.elitedangerous.com/
It had what I was looking for, and it looked good too.
That's all the advertisement I needed. I get it though.. people are too stupid and too lazy to think for themselves and need a video and someone else's opinion to make up their minds for them these days. You can believe how much I look forward to watching natural forces like Darwinism exert themselves on this part of the population. And I take heat all the time from people because I don't get all bent out of shape when someone harms themselves because "people were mean to me on [insert social media site name]."

No one needs any of that garbage to live. In fact, many more would still continue to do so if they simply stayed away from it. But I'm a "monster" because I know and admit that it's not a necessity for life.
We need air to breathe. We need water to drink. We need food to eat. We need shelter from the elements. Without any one of these things, we die.

We will not die without Facebook, YouTube, Twaddle or whatever. We will not die because something says we're terrible, stupid, ugly, blah blah blah.
And we will not die from thinking for ourselves. In fact, we'll live better thinking for ourselves, living for ourselves.

Or maybe I'm just old now, and "don't get it", but honestly I've seen it, and I don't want it.

Not all that long ago, the "smart phone" really came in one "flavor" - the Blackberry. They were incredibly expensive and service for them was equally expensive, leaving them largely as Business devices for those important enough in their jobs to warrant being able to access their e-mail while nearly anywhere. Nowdays, every 5th grade kid has at least one Android or iPhone and they're becoming the centers of their lives. Ever watch a pair of kids sit on a couch, right next to each other and send text messages? I get to see it at least two or three times each month.
Sure, their quiet, and that's nice, but for the love of all that's holy, that person is sitting right next to you. Mouths are not just places to shove food.

And insidiously, why are these devices now in the price realm of disposable? Because they're an avenue for advertisement delivery.

And the sooner you can taint the young with ads, the sooner you can shape them into the good little consumers with empty heads and full wallets you need them to be.

Maybe not to you and maybe not even to 90% of the players, but it is to Frontier. A thousand extra Elite sales can provide a nice chunk of revenue over time, not to mention additional sales via word of mouth. Every sale matters, and sales due to free advertising are especially valuable.

Don’t look at it from your own point of view, see it from Frontier’s marketing and accounting point of view. Sure, one youtuber leaving the game won’t have a huge impact on their bottom line. Now what if Isinona also stops making videos? (which he already has). What if Scott Manley stopped talking about Elite? (he mostly has) What if Vindicator Jones was next? How much impact would Obisidan Ant dropping Elite have on the community? One person is an anomaly, several become a trend. There is a very good reason why when Ant makes a thread Frontier almost always responds to it, just as the videos that Kornelius made on the engineer grind were responded to as well. It’s because Frontier knows they matter, even if some players think they don’t. Optics matter.

Will Kornelius leaving Elite ring the death bell for the game? No, of course not. Still, it’s not a good thing either by means.

From FD's point of view, they'll be looking at their sales figures. Simple really. Marketing encompasses many platforms, of which YouTube is simply a player. And as a platform, it's appeal is primarily to a particular demographic anyway (as is very obvious by the varied responses to this thread).

I appear to have run out of Rep. Have some virtual rep, instead!

Yes. He's really got to stop talking sense. [big grin]

I agree there is truth in that.... HOWEVER it does not explain CQC, (which for the record i do rather enjoy if i can get in a game) or why bread an butter things like npc wingmates - which are (or were, as i have not tried in a while) even in one of the single player practice missions) or npc crew are not in the game.

I was playing space games 20 years ago with such simple things as npc wingmen, which come with cool extras such as mission types involving them etc.

All is far from lost, and all can still flesh out........ except for exploration. I fear this is 1 feature which releasing massively simplified from the DDF was a catastrophically bad call and FD wont be able to patch that up sadly.

I'm looking at the point of view as someone who worked in marketing for seven years. Customers have a very over-inflated opinion of their own value and opinions. And Youtube. And bloggers. They're generally an echo chamber anyway. Yes, they are useful - valuable at times - but not some essential thing where the loss of one vogger is a major issue. The world of marketing will not collapse without Youtube fan channels and blogs and PPC.

If someone is looking for an Elite youtube video to judge if they want to buy, then when they run a search, they do not see a sign in the results which says"

"YOUTUBER ABC IS NO LONGER MAKING ELITE VIDEOS SO WE LEFT A GAP HERE"

No: There'll be a VJ video, or OA, or someone else. Or someone new (that happens, too). If you remove you hands from a bucket full of water, the remaining hole represents the marketing void left on Youtube by their absence.

If FD have structured their roadmap and marketing so that a single amateur youtuber drifting off to something new is crucial to them, they are absolute idiots.

Citation needed on Insonia, given the last video is only a month old.

So you say we should trust developer websites and buy things with no doing research outside? Are you serious??

This is the one game I personally didn't need to do any research on the developer. As soon as I heard that FD were looking to make E: D, I couldn't give them my money fast enough. However, that is only because I know they are an independent company and they already have my trust from past experience.

I considered the other game too, but decided against it as I didn't really know much about the developer (though I had played his previous games).
