General / Off-Topic The coming French elections

But because Patrick doesn't like him, this seems to mean that the majority of the French would be opposed.

That's not how voting works.

It is a fact that 40 million French people have not given their votes to Macron. Only 7 million out of 47 million have voted for him. This is how the voting works. For example, in contrast to France, in the case of Brexit, a large majority of Britons voted to leave and there was a strong participation with a little abstention. We can say that the British decision is very clear. Unlike France, where it is a combination of circumstances and an electoral hold up. When Macron was adviser and minister of François Hollande, he was not loved by the French. But you can not understand because you are a foreigner and do not possess the French spirit

Yes, many oppose Macron, and a lot for good reason, on this we agree, but even you must prefer him to Le Pen right ?

Don't let Patrick confuse you here. The people who opposed Macron in the parliamentary election voted for some other party. Remember, this wasn't a lesser evil contest, that was the Presidential one. In the parliamentay election most of the French voters just didn't care enough to turn up, in part I think because they figured Macron's bunch had it in the bag.

Those who wanted the socialists or the hard left, actually voted for those candidates. Patrick is flat wrong (or dishonest) in his claim that the result means most French voters oppose Macron. The ones who stayed home rather either didn't care, or didn't see any better candidates.

Yes for the presidential election, thera are 12 million of abstentions, 3 million of white votes, 1 million of null votes, and 10 million of votes for Le Pen. And on the 20 million of votes for Macron, half did not vote for Macron but against Le Pen ... You can say 10 million of votes for Macron to the presidential election and 7 million of votes for Macron in the legislative elections. Here is the reality

But we can all safely say, France has rejected Le Pen and her party.

No doubt about it, as for decades. But since a few years the National Front progresses and becomes commonplace. This year they have for the first time, the deputies to the national assembly (8 deputies). And it would have had much more if there had been the proportional. Macron wants to create the proportional in the coming years for the future elections ...

They rejected the left wing populist fantasies of Mélenchon as well.

The people who used to vote the now all but collapsed Socialist party of Hollande, voted for Macron, and many of it's representatives jumped ship as well. Whatever happens next, will be something new.

I hope Macron will manage something like the Nordic social democrats did in previous decades. A wellfare state with a dynamic economy.

I truly hope you are right, time will tell i guess. (allthough as a democratic socialist, i'm never happy when the democratic socialist parties suffer).
