Blocking feature being abused or was it intended to be this way? FDEV?

You are correct that the block & friend lists are not actually updated, but the effect in that instance is what we describe.

I think the conversations are getting muddled around it all ;)

So, if you and I are in the same super cruise instance, and neither of us has the other blocked, will a player who has me on their block list instance with us if another instance is readily available?

Not if it can help it, unless they are friends with me, in which case they probably will.

Only if it's the 3rd Tuesday in an odd numbered month.

Give me 20 minutes to walk home in the rain before o reply properly, but the use of the word inherit infers that you will always have less chance which is incorrect, although as others have stated it's not straightforward.

The game tries to avoid instancing blocked people but it isn't always possible.

For example, if they are in the same instance as your friend and you join your friend as a wing mate for example. In that case you and the person that has blocked you could be in the same instance until you and your friend move away or drop into normal space / jump into another system etc.

Once that happens he won't be instanced with either of you while you are both in a wing or in the same instance.

exploit on exploit is pushing an exploit
in fact the biggest abuse is using PG to 30k commanders, instead of few friends.

Hey, my disagreeable friend :D
Actually PG is working as intended, because with the swipe of a line or 2 they could limit PG to 32 or 1024 or whatever they wish ;)

Yes.

Emergent means:

in the process of coming into being or becoming prominent.

emergent multiplayer means:

multiplayer becoming more prominent.

Simple.
I had understood "emergent" to derive its meaning from systems theory, and to denote behaviour from a system that cannot be predicted from the constituents of the system, although that's just one definition.

By that token, however, PvP of any stripe is categorically not emergent gameplay, as it doesn't take a Hawking to work out that putting guns on ships means that people are going to shoot at each other for no reason.

Well I'm not part of FDEV, so my answer should not be taken as an official response, but just stop to think for 1 second and ask yourself how on earth could that even happen? If you're in the same instance as someone does your friends list suddenly become populated with theirs?

Ok, well my opinion is that if you happen to be in an instance with someone who has people on their block list (randoms at a CG say), you are also blocked from seeing the people of their block list because they are being kept out of the same instance.

Therefore someone else is dictating my game experience which is classed as griefing by some, ergo people who have block lists in open are griefers.. [where is it]

given said 30k group has had admin help from FD i would suggest FD do not think its an exploit.

if FD do not think its an exploit................. its not an exploit.

indeed i would say more accurately it is a group of players trying to implement a mode promised in the kickstarter with in the ruleset that FD ended up giving us (making lemonade from lemons as it were)

FD advertised we were getting multiple open modes each with their own rulesets and with the ability to be banned from them for breaking said rules.
sounds like a certain 30k member PG to me.

if you can find any official post stating FD consider use of PG outside of a few friends an exploit then we have enough info for a discussion, otherwise its just a feature you do not like (which is fine btw)

How's about every account is allowed a maximum of 10 "slots" for blocking other CMDRs from your game? If you try to block an 11th CMDR, the game just logs you into solo, because if you need to block more than 10 people, clearly *you* are the problem.

And if more than 10 other players block a Cmdr they are banished to solo too? I like it ;)

I do think it's a little lame if it's being used to create 'safe space mode' rather than as a harassment prevention tool. Genuine harassment, for example racist abuse, sexual threats and threats of real-world violence being given in direct chat etc, is poison to online gaming communities and anyone doing them should be permanently banned.

However the other side of the coin is that I'm sure the people who are using the block function in this way would argue that they are being harassed by people trying to fight them and as we all know from the other 10,000 threads about it, any discussion of the rights and wrongs of that opinion is completely pointless and will remain so until Fdev either firm up the rules on what is and isn't allowed, or just give up on the whole thing and close one of either open or solo completely to remove the endless tedium that surrounds this topic.

One thing I will say is that people doing this are basically killing any sense of meaningful player agency. If I was doing powerplay, or trying to blockade a CG for genuine role-play reasons, I would be furious to know people were using this as a way of wafting around in open play risk-free. I just can't understand anybody who wants to play a game like that when there are two modes that provide effectively risk-free gaming already for those activities.

In the meantime though I'd suggest the players in open would probably be better off playing the game with those who do want to play with them rather than worrying about those who don't because all you're going to do is get madder and madder. It won't solve anything.

I'd still love to know what the OP thinks about all this :) Also isn't it amazing how we've been able to get back to talking about the topic now someone isn't using the word gank0rs all the time :p

OK how about we look at it the other way around then. Why do you not have an issue with the friends list? If you and I are in an instance and you are friends with lots of people who just like killing other players with no warning or reason, I am very likely to end up in an instance full of people who would kill me without even giving it a thought!

As has already been pointed out the friend list overrides the block list so this is far, far more likely to happen!
