Why am i buying stuff ?

The human brain is a funny thing. We say we want things a certain way, like all these store items in the game. But if they were in the game we wouldn't value them in the same way dropping a few dollars so we can exclusively use them does. What triggers our happy centers in the brain is at odds with what we think is reasonable economics. It's why Clash of Clans prints money, Casinos print money (unless you're Trump), World of Warcraft prints money and it's why Frontier's store probably is a healthy financial return.

No point in making some kind of stand about it. If you love Elite Dangerous, and play it all the time, and enjoy all the trinkets and ship dressings, then you'll find the value of buying some. Money is smoke and mirrors anyway. Just pay your bills, buy your food and enjoy life with the extra.

As a solo player i decided that there was no need for me to bother with cosmetic stuff as no one would see it anyways

now i sit in a red python with purple weapons and green engines , oh and nameplates ...... go figure :)

Once upon a time this stuff would be part of the game or an added expansion, not the nickle and diming it is now. I don`t have a problem with Capitalism, but i do have a problem with how some companies marketing have gone to a LOT of effort to get into the minds of people in various ways over the years until something that would`ve been once seen as unethical is now embraced with opened wallets. And especially how children have been dragged into it. Gaming companies today has taken advantage of kids in a way that would be seen as borderline criminal anywhere else. At least adults can make a reasoned choice - Children cannot.
You are right of course, but would it be fair to assume that frontier is innocent of that particularly nasty part of targeted capitalism ? But yes, i still think most of this stuff should have been in the game from the start.

I remember a time when i'd laugh at mates for buying cosmetics on dota (still laugh). But here i am, i bought 5 weapons colours, 2 paintjobs, 1 cmdr flight suit pack, just now i purchased orange engine colour, i have plans for another flightsuit and paintjob. I don't think these things should need to be payed for yet i'm happy giving frontier my money because they have made such a masterpiece of a game.

Anyone else feel the same ? Or am i just weak minded lol ?

You know you're going to buy the Midnight paint jobs if/when they become available around Black Friday. You know you're going to buy them for every ship you fly often. You know you're going to somehow justify buying all of them, just in case.

Those Gutamaya girls in the Midnight paint...

Today I purchased a new Sidewinder skin, a flight suit pack, and two engine colours.

All of it awesome.

OP, it's all the same. Star Citizen, or Elite. I spend because I can. But, the FDL's ship kit is awesome looking. Even though I don't get to see it with out the new camera. I still fly it more than any other ship!!!

Because buying things is fun. Buying sparkly things for your amazing space car is even more fun.

Indeed.
Now if I could only figure out the double-damned camera system perhaps I could even look at all the stuff I have bought.
Even purchased an XBox controller for my PC for that and the SRV.
Found a SRV/XBox controller thread so I am good there now I have to find one for it and the camera.

I play ED more than any other game in my Steam library, so I don't have a problem supporting their future development by dropping a couple of bucks once in a while. :)

I really like the new Dolphin paint jobs for example! :) The Wayfarer pack I think its called, in two toned blue. Really added something to the look of the ship.

Some of the offerings are kind of Meh... No interest in the various pilot suit skins since I never use any of that Holo-Me stuff, but always on the look-out for something new for one of my ships. :D

Gamer: A poor person, who convinces everyone else that spending money how they want is unethical, immoral, and should never be done...until they are not poor...then it's:

I think you mean...

I've never bought cosmetics previously, but this is a slippery fricking slope. I was fine with the odd skin every 3 months or so. I told myself I'd never by a fricking ship kit. But I swear, the minute they lowered the prices and upped the ratio, my resolve dissolved. And now I've crumbled completely and rewarded my Asp with the full works [rolleyes]

(Plus now I'm buying cosmetics in Rocket League too. To be fair that feels like paying them back for all the free updates and general fun. But still! Slippery! :D)

Gotta have yellow. All my ships are yellow, all fire yellow and when I get round to it they'll all leave yellow trails.

Isn't it weird, when you look at the word 'yellow' it appears to be a nonsense. Go figure.

Anywho, all my ships are yellow and they've all got the same name, only the ID varies.

I would like to be able to buy one specific colour for all the ships in the game rather than having to buy a pack just for the yellow.

Sometimes I go to outfitting just to look at my yellow ship.

Me and yellow, we got a thing going on.

A lot of "free" games link store stuff to game buffs, so to be equal to other players you need to spend money, Atlantica Online for instance, teleport, attack and defense buffs and other advantageous perks were only available from the store for real money and they only lasted a month! Now this doesn't bother me if the game is really good, but there are a lot of free gams that go overboard with this aspect. It's refreshing to not have to buy perks with real money just to make me equal to everyone else.

I think FDEV have done good here, them that wants the pretties can pay for them, the rest that just want to play can play without worrying they are underpowered due to not having the ability to spend real money on buffs.

I personally like the idea of basically spending money to show support for the game. This game has no monthly fee, no dlc's other than legit expansions, and most of all no pay to win. I highly respect that. And they wouldn't be able to update the game as much without people buying all of this totally useless but very cool looking stuff, so I'm glad to do it.
