Ancient ruins ... are brillant!

Seriously, that is exactly the kind of exploration based gameplay i was looking for. I love the feeling to head out of the bubble to some ancient ruins, scan the systems en route, maybe find a few water worlds or even earth likes. Then, once i am in the system, i have to get within 1k ly range of the landfall planets to find out if there are ruins there. After that comes the landing. Every ruin feels different. I had one on the dark side of a planet. In the sky you could see the milky way and nebulae, a ringed planet, and a moon, all illuminated by a red dwarf. That was such an AMAZING atmosphere, driving around these ruins, looking for these artifacts, scanning the obelisks and being awarded for each correct scan with a really interesting piece of lore. And since it also pays well, it also lets me progress in my other projects (like fitting out a fleet of task dedicated ships).

THAT IS FRACKING WONDERFUL!

Which is why it makes me so sad that all this will only be experienced by a small minority of gamers. If you don't know about it, there is no way you learn about it in game, since the only galnet article giving you direction is too old to be accessible in game. If you dock at Meene you get the mission but with no clue what to do. It's also a bit frustrating that the whole mission can not be (realistically) completed on your own without using the excellent online tools. Finding and figuring out 101 different obelisks is just too much, but i understand that this mission is intended as a community effort. But then it would be really nice of have more hints in the game for single players, or at least a tracker of your collected data and the successful combos that unlocked the individual datasets.

So, please FD. You did such an amazing job with this (i didn't try it when it was bugged, so have only positive experiences)!
Here are a few suggestions:

1. Raise some awareness about this mission in GalNet. I.e. make players curious and let them fly to Meene to check it out.

2. Add a list of at least 20 systems with ancient ruins to the mission message and add markers in the galmap. This list should cover sites that contain all 101 datasets.

3. Make new PGed missions, where the objective is to fly to a certain system, find the ruins, and scan a specific obelisk with specific artifacts on board to obtain a specific (mission unique, like with commodities) data set. For each such mission give the player a piece of lore (again, mission unique) in addition to good payout.

Anyway, thank you, FD! Doing this mission is one of the best experience i had in the three year playing ED. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

And to all players who didn't check out this mission so far. Try it!
If you don't know where and how to start, here is a guide.

EDIT: I almost forgot. I didn't hand in the mission yet (still 40 dataset to go), but once i do, i would expect that it unlocks Ram Tah, but i am afraid it doesn't, which doesn't make any sense. It would be great if the completing the mission objective would give me his location, and handing in the mission at this location would unlock him.

Until I read the OP, I wasnt aware any mission existed...thought it was just eye candy. Meh, Im too far away, Ill watch it on youtube ^

It's just a shame it took so long (9 months? A year? I lost count..) to get to a functional, completable state without taking advantage of numerous bugs.

The recent release of the unknown structures is a pretty sterling example of how this kind of content should work on-release, and while I can recommend the guardian ruins to anyone who hasn't done them yet, I got burned too many times by that activity to want to go back and actually finish it.

Thx OP, i'll give it a try...stuck lately on the UP thing but my cargo rack is not modded and i played a little too rough with the probe...anyway, looking forward to the ancient architecture...

I remember the first time I went out to one of the Ancient Guardian sites -- it was an amazing experience, and one I will always remember. Yeah, the bugs kind of ruined the mission itself (they are fixed now, as far as I know, but they existed for months), but the sites themselves, the feeling of exploring the unknown, the sights...

If you haven't gone, and have a ship that's capable, you owe it to yourself to go on out there. Even if you don't complete the entire thing, you'll get paid for what you do finish, and you'll have the enjoyment of it all.

Good luck out there!

(To get the mission, just fly to Felice Dock in the Meene system, and land there. You'll get the mission in your inbox).

It pays out 200,000,000 credits and you get 4 weeks to do it once the mission is picked up - don't watch it on youtube.

I have no interest in credits whatsoever...I dont grind them and Im already 7kylies away and moving in the wrong direction...away. Gonna take a lot more than credits to get me interested Im afraid, but 10 outta 10 fer effort ^

DON'T! Of course, it is your choice, but it's really a great experience to drive around these ruins with the wonderful night sky above your head.

Yeah, that's a pity, and i am really glad that i waited until it was confirmed that it works. I understand thought, that it is a hard engineering challenge to get this kind of complex mission implemented bug free. But now that they got it working, i cannot wait to see more. FD are very talented programmers, so i guess they have a fleshed out system in place to make these kind of missions. What i think is very important though, is that the mission not only rewards you with the brilliant atmosphere and sights (and good payout), but also with very interesting lore. Well written stuff!

I ddnt mean to be overly salty about this, but theres just no easy sugar coated version here, so apologies an advance. This cannot be done solo, if one is to believe the hype around it. Its a communal type mission I assume? Cool...Im a solo player with no friends still playing...whats in it fer me?

Im also a role player in that I role play serenity...I refuse to put guns on my ship so Im about as much use to you guys as a chocolate fireguard, but thanks fer the offer anyway but Ill stick to YT...its safer and saves me the trouble of travelling back there to experience the bugs personally ^

Saddest part is that it's much easier and more enjoyable to watch it on Youtube.
I don't like digging through the internet for information about what's going on in the game. The devs make no effort to involve the player in game, so I will return the favor by just watching the game unfold on Youtube, via ObsidianAnt.

You can do it in Solo now! Without the maps done by Canonn (kudos to you!) it will take some time, but even without it's doable.

I am 100% with you on the internet part. I guess 50% of my recent posts are about that there should be more info in game. But this mission is really an experience. Sure, on YT it looks cool. But nothing replaces the feeling of awe when you drive around these ruins, 1k LY from the bubble, alone in the dark with light coming only from the beautiful night sky and your headlights. I cannot believe i am saying this, but THIS is in my opinion brilliant GAMEPLAY. You get a real incentive to explore. You find something that matters and is really well done visually. You get awarded by in game lore that is very interesting and crucial(!) to get a sense of what is going on, and it gives good Cr, so it doesn't feel like you could have earned much more doing other stuff. I know that Cr don't matter for everyone. But for me Cr are important too, because i love flying ships, and good ships are expensive, and i am far from being a billionaire.

I applaud yer enthusiasm, I just dont share it. YT is simply safer, easier and less grindy while already doing other grindy stuff like travelling long distance to jacques with an unmodded ship and standard jump range.

Whatever man...Im happy that yer enjoying it, really...as one gamer to another...but it simply aint floating my boat in the slightest. Im not smart enough to even understand the cannon puzzles let alone solve them...dont even know where to start unless I spend hours reading up on the mega threads. Youtube ftw...sorry ^

As fer credits, I fly a d rated asp explorer and have only 2 rebuys in my wallet...but as an explorer, I already have everything I could possibly need. So what would I spend the credits on and why would I go outta my way to get them?

I understand you. I travelled to Jaques in an unmodded ship, and it felt like too much work. A bit like driving 2000km though Europe at night on a highway.
I also absolutely underhand that it feels overwhelming. This is why i wrote the OP. What FD have implemented has so enormous potential if they would only present it in a better way, e.g. give players some hints, at least a long list of systems with ruins, and some in-game tracker of the process. It is so sad that these 101 cool pieces of Guardian lore (who where they, as a society, what tech did they have, how did they look like,...) is locked away behind this wall. This mission shows that ED is everything but mindless grind and 'mile wide inch deep'.

I agree. There should be more reasons to go there. Different mission givers wanting different things instead of just one wanting a lot of things.

Cool. Good to hear this. I was thinking of doing this Ram Tah mission soon. Was waiting until they fixed the bugs in it.

How long did it take you to complete it?

Btw...they have hinted that 2.4 may have similar gameplay, not all alien pew pew

I didn't complete it yet 100%, but getting it all figured out, finding the artifacts, and collecting 50 dataset took me about 6h. Getting the rest should go faster, so i'd assume in the end 8-10h?
Anyway, you don't have to compete 100%, you get paid per data set (1 million), and if you get all 101 sets you get 100 million bonus. When i started i didn't really intend to get all sets. But since every set is a lore piece i am now motivated to do this.

I hope very much that 2.4 will bring more of this!
