To Cutter, or not to Cutter... finally reached Duke, do I care?

I use my Cutter mainly for trade CG's and very occasional trading.

I find its great for CG's, as I have it fitted out with 760 ton cargo with a 5A shield and it it virtually guarantees a top 10% result with very little effort, I even made it into the top 10 once.

The thing is though, as soon as the CG is finished, I cant wait to park it up and get back into my Clipper or Python - mainly because of the Cutter's sluggish handling. I actually find it tiring to fly for long periods of time as I have to work a lot harder to keep the ship in control, especially the way it drifts under thruster control as well as sluggish super cruise performance.

Whilst I love the look and sound of the ship, along with its awesome cargo space, for me I am happier to fly smaller better handling ships most of the time.

If you have the credits and want to move cargo quickly, then by all means the Cutter is your ship, however I suggest you dont sell your fleet to buy one as you may be wishing you could get back into something thats easier and more fun to fly.

I got the Cutter last night before going to bed and have enjoyed flying it around today. It's not as bad as I imagined with 8A thrusters and G3 Dirty Drive engineer but haven't taken it for a combat test yet as got more than a few things to engineer ...

One minor issue that's annoying me is the sensor appears washed out, hence when looking for a place to land on planet, there's no contrast between hills and flats. Do Cutter owners experience this too and is there a fix?

Buy and try the Cutter, God Damn it!
And make up your own mind. [yesnod]

Personally I think it's a superb ship and super sexy.

And it, literally, looks like a Dragon. [yesnod]
Dont need to be imperial to want to bask in that glory. [squeeeee]
It's magic - Black Magic, truth be told. :)

got the cutter about 3mths ago, A specked it and g5 eng. now its sat in drydock gathering dust, while I pilot my old trusty battle python.
the cutters vertical and lateral thrusters suck. breaking wind is a must when manoeuvring. added thrust. ;)

Out of the big three in my inventory the Cutter has more flight time, I just divide them as follows:
1. Combat = Corvette
2. Exploration and long distance travel = Anaconda (or more likely AspX)
3. Trade/haulage = Cutter

I'd like to switch to a more multi-role Cutter with lots of turrets at some point with the 8A prismatic shields, it is one of the best looking ships in 3rd person cam

Pretty much the above for me too. I like the Cutter but when it's for trading or hauling PowerPlay material. I like that as opposed to most other trading ships, the Cutter can be equipped to defend itself while still holding a large cargo. The only thing I hate with the Cutter is the insane drifting. It drifts like there is no tomorrow. Corvette is awesome for fighting. It's really a beast. The Anaconda is good for those long trips. Can be outfitted to be lethal too.

After reading all this good information and perspective, I think I made the best choice for how I currently play in going with the Corvette.

But in the future, who knows? :)

Good luck getting that thing to the battle.... You'll end up paying a crap ton in transfer fees constantly

Are you referring to my vette? I get 20LY and the farthest I go for bounty hunting is about 450Ly round trip. No biggie.

Where exactly would I have to transfer it to?

A test fly feature would be nice for these cases, right ?
An isolated instanced system with a station and an outpost, perhaps some NPC target dummies to test weapons on.
Just something basic to let you get a feel for it before committing to buy a ship.

The thing is, it's a totally different ship when engineered so trying a stock cutter might put you off buying one, and then you would be missing out big time ...dirty drive tuning makes a big difference

I had originally planned on owning only one cutter but I'm leaning towards a second now. Feels wrong to have that 200million prismatic shield with all those heavy rolls sitting in storage

The stats I'm talking about is with regular shields not prismatics which I don't have access to yet.

Up to Lord/52%...getting there. Must think positive!
Course then I'll have to keep grinding for a while for the extra cash unless I sell some ships.

And since we are talking Cutter and money what LYR system sells them?

Commanders,

Good day to you all, and I hope it has been a wonderful day of space travel.

Riddle me this. I have FINALLY reached Empire rank of Duke. Yippie! It only took forever, minus a day. Now that I have the ability, I am considering purchasing the Imperial Cutter. Firstly, I have to mention that I am absolutely in love with my Anaconda, and still feel it to be the best all around ship for us all, but I am open to enlightenment.

So far, the only things that I like about the Cutter are the fact that: 1. it can haul so much cargo (Weird to be so. Shouldn't that credit go to a transport ship, but alas...) 2. It looks perrrty (sort of), and 3. It has pretty strong shields.

Now, with the grind of Elite in regards to earning credits for purchases and materials for upgrades, I am stuck on whether or not I want to purchase this big bird.

Would any of you that have made the leap care to share your insight? I am having buyers-doubt, and I don't really want that to morph into buyers-remorse.

Thank you,
Confused in Cali

Simply. Yes. It's an awesome ship only bettered by the Corvette for combat.

I have to ask, why did you go through that rank grind if you weren't sure that you wanted a Cutter?

Anyway, it depends on how you play and what you want, but the answer is almost certainly yes, get the Cutter. I have the big three and the Cutter is my favorite. I'm mostly a trader so I'm biased, but still. Before I got the Cutter I was expecting it to fight like a glorified T9 based on all the whining about it, but honestly, put everything on turrets except for a gimbaled class 4 in the nose and she's a beast. She can do pretty much anything an Anaconda can do and in most cases better.

But here's the real reason you want a Cutter: because once you have one, you can easily afford to buy and kit out whatever you want. It is an amazing cash cow and much better than the Anaconda for trading. Plus, she's beautiful :)

It's trading for me.
Already have a T9 and a Conda and I like to have a goal since the Panther Clipper seems to be going the unicorn route.
I have grinded up to, just short, of Baron but I doubt I'll get all the way to the Cutter my first try.

Cutter A - Best hauler out there

Cutter B - Pretty good CZ ship

Cutter PvP - Disengage from combat so you can cell bank then come back repeatedly for 20+ minutes. Make sure you have at least 50% resists and 8000+ shields.
