New Oculus Owner - First impressions

I, too, have been on the fence about buying a Rift - expense/will second gen come out soon/motion sickness etc etc.
I have £400 in Amazon vouchers, so as the price in now down to £400, I've gone and ordered it. I'll get voice attack as well to complete the experience.

Best thing I ever bought for my PC.

i bought a DK2 a year or so ago just as the CV1 dropped.
I was told that oh you made a mistake it's not good, you'll get motion sickness, the graphics are not as good.

Well Pah!!! Once tried you can't go back.

Oh and the DK2 despite Oculus saying it is not supported anymore and the doom sayers telling me they'll cut off the DK2.

For the price DK2's are going for now it's well worth it if you have not got the odd £400 to spare, seen them go for £80.

New foams are are available do you can make em nice and clean etc.

The sippy cup might be the way to go. LOL On a side note, I love voice attack but I didn't use it last night because my Mic is in my headset. I'm planning on removing the ear phones built in the Oculus tonight and seeing how my headset fits. Any other voice attack users do it this way or did you pick up a stand alone Mic to put on the desk?

When I got my Rift I foolishly got a desk mic too, not realizing that the Rift already had a microphone in it. You can't see the mic, but trust me, it's there. I just use the Rift mic, it works really well and is perfect for Voice Attack, there is no need for a separate headset or mic.

Just ordered mine (because of the Summer sale - always wanted one, but indeed the prices ...). I'll get back to y'all. I can't wait.

Anyways guys, thank you so much for sharing your experiences and knowledge!

I'm glad I asked the question, I had no idea the Oculus already had a Mic. This forum is fantastic, so many helpful people on it.

I got logged in to my ship and was blown away. It wasn't like TrackIR at all. I was not expecting the sense of scale and size that I was seeing. I probably sat there for 10 minutes just looking around. The inside of my FAS looked really cool, I saw even more stuff than I could see with TrackIR. Plus every think looked real, not flat and 2D. Once I move my ship to the surface of the station I could not believe how big it was inside. I just never got the feeling before that I was inside this massive structure, but seeing in VR is just mind blowing. When I finally decided to take off and leave the station I couldn't get over how big the mail slot actually is. Before I always felt like I was going to hit the ceiling or floor but in VR you can see how big it really is and it made it pretty easy to fly through. I left the station not sure what to do as I took it all in, again the size of the station from the outside was just as impressive as the inside. I figured I'd just do some more bounty hunting to really give this VR try. It was just amazing, the asteroids look so much bigger, the enemy ships are so much bigger, and I found flying so much easier. I really think it is because it is so much easier to judge distance in VR. I found it a lot easier to stay on the tail of enemy ships and avoid getting shot at by them. I ended staying there until I ran out of ammo in my multi-cannons. I racked up another 2 million in bounties and headed back to the station to collect. Again docking was a lot easier, I could see everything better and the station seemed so much bigger and I never felt like I didn't have room to maneuver. I didn't want to stop playing but It was getting late and I had to get to work in the morning so I forced myself to log off. I can't wait to discover ED all over again.

Great post. I remember the thrill and feeling of seeing just how massive everything was when I first loaded it up in my DK2. Of course even better now on the CV1. It was my first real jawdropping moment when I knew just how big VR could be. Completely transported to inside a living system rather than playing a game on the monitor with everday stuff in your peripheral vision. Magical moment. Anyway Welcome CMDR.

Great Op. Welcome to the new world. Each time I read a first review from new member to the VR community, I get that all knowing smile creep across my face as the memory my first time comes flooding back. I can tell you that a year in, it never gets old. All the over-used "OMG's", "Holy Frack's" and "after picking my jaw off the floor" comments somehow barely do justice to the first time experience. Until one experiences it one cannot GROK all the fuss. Once you do, you can as James Bond said to Goldfinger, say "I know what he knows". Thanks for the smile.

I thought I could resist buying a VR headset but I buckled now that OR is actually decently priced. I just ordered an Oculus + touch thingies. I can't wait!!!

I also just got my Rift up and running two days ago. I haven't bothered to try yet, but I was wondering if any of you have used the touch controllers for ED and what you think of them. I don't have a joystick setup or anything so it's either that, or a gamepad for now.

Well OP, I'm on round 2! I originally bought the oculus when it first came out. But, returned it. I got the summer sale email and decided to give it another go. I do like the scale of the game, but, I cannot wear my glasses. Nor do I find the headset comfortable :(. I have a week to make a decision!

Great OP. Thanks for sharing. I always love these "First time in VR" threads because, as others have said, it brings back those old memories of trying it for the first time. And also these threads are feel good threads, full of happiness - awwwww. :)

ps. There's been a free trial of "The Unspoken" going on in the Oculus store and I was very impressed by what I'm guessing might be the best darn fantasy spell casting game in VR. It only seems to be duelling so far (not sure yet), but it's one of the best uses of the touch controllers I've experienced. You really do feel like you're casting spells - memory and coordination required!
