Finding a Rank mission, help please!

On occasion there's a little white half star associated with a mission, not always but sometimes, what is that all about, does it have anything to do with the particular broker or his afiliations or is it an indicator to assit in choosing a misssion for the desired factions.

As I understand it, the half star means that you need the horizons expansion to do this mission, so it probably involves a planetary landing

OK, you obviously know then, what's the difference.

Rank is for Major Factions (Empire / Federation / Alliance - there are only three and they control lots of star systems).

Better rank gives access to ship / systems etc. They do not (directly) give out missions. Rank just goes up. You can rank with all major factions, they don't care.

Reputation is Minor Factions (only present in a handful of systems).

They can be allied with a Major Faction. They give out missions through brokers in the Mission board in stations, and they can control stations. Having a better reputation gives access to better missions. Missions can cause you to lose reputation with a minor faction.

I would concentrate of trying to understand the difference between minor and major factions. The System map lists the minor factions and who they are allied with in second tab (I think)

Look up a guide on the Background Simulation for more there is too much to repeat here. I've not found a good one, this one https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/193064-A-Guide-to-Minor-Factions-and-the-Background-Sim talks too much about System States, which isn't what you ask about (but is an important thing that minor factions do). It doesn't help that people interchangeably use rank & reputation - hence my rant - apologies :)

PS: Nothing to do with anything ED related, but where do I know your avatar from?
Green Tentacle from Day of the Tentacle ;) (I think they were in Maniac Mansion as well)

First of all thanks for the data on you avatar, it's been bugging me for a week.
Second, ok, got the major faction, it's like America's Republican, Democrats and Indepents systems.
So, that leaves only the minor ones to figure out. And to pay closer attention to as I learn.
Thanks!

Minor faction: Head back. Or find another system nearby with the same faction (use system map or eddb.io). Easiest to head back.
Major Faction: as long as the system is controlled by the same major faction (and the minor faction who gives the mission is allied to the major faction) then it will count.

Minor Factions: Pick the broker for the minor faction. The others are for .... other minor factions.
Major Factions: Pick any broker associated with the major faction. Pictures on previous post by Maymo show how these symbols look.

Picture please. I assume it's the symbol of a major faction, but it could be anything. As none of the major faction symbols match your description.

I do not have the ability to upload pictures, however my best guestimation would be in an explanation is, it's white and appears to be an image of a shining star as it crest the horizon on a distant planet. It only appears on some to do mission and not all. I recon it may have something to do with making a choice but not sure.
