So, about 2.4...

So how much time is being wasted on this "story" nobody is following? I thought elite didn't have a scripted story to it. Once played out, it'll never be played again and then we have rest of the game they couldn't be bothered with as they spent all their resources on a scripted story which were were told "ED doesn't have scripted story's go play SC for that nonsense!"

LOL

Looks like you didn't understand much. There is no personal scripted story line that revolves around you, the solitary player but there is a story that revolves around the galaxy, politics, aliens and conspiracies. I find it unbelievable that someone who visits the forum for quite some time doesn't know anything about Elite Dangerous.

So there´s at least no "sneaky" injection of 2.4, but a fixed date for an update?

Of course there will be a fixed major update which will bring the client version to 2.4. The update is not just about story, but as always also about QOL improvements and minor features like salvage contracts, repair limpets and possibly some other stuff we don't know about yet. It's possible that they'll release more updates after it to inject more story stuff though.

Mission improvements as well. Looks like we will be getting multiple follow on missions as well. I will be surprised if there is no beta as there will be stuff that needs testing, but it may not be a long one.

They said that 2.4 is coming 3rd quarter this year. And it will be multiple updates not just one. August is the final month in quarter 3. They haven't said "Sorry we aren't giving you the update we stated we would. Yet another set back sorry (cough we ran out of money and had to sell 9% of the company to a Chinese gaming company to fund this! Sorry we said we would never do this and wanted to be independent but money talks more than promises and assurances.)" If I know anything about Frontier since I got Elite dangerous in 2015. Almost all of their updates have been on a Friday and toward the end of the month when said update was released. So since it wasn't at the end of July it's going to be at the end of August.

To me you don't tell people "3rd quarter" and push it to the last day. Yes Technically it is still 3rd quarter, but to me that's closer to 4th quarter than it is 3rd....

Also to let everyone know. Braben said they've been working on this update since before they dropped 2.0. It's not a matter of them "starting" to program it. It's a matter of they've been working on it for ump-tine bazillion hours and they're only going to give us pieces as time goes on..... Doesn't make since to me. UNLESS it's story that's not meant to be repeated.

Seriously? How long have you been on here and you still don't understand?

We talked about what's coming to 2.4 with Lavecon communications and the newsletters that followed after this, and in Zac’s post here.

The difference with 2.4 is that we're heavily focusing on the continuation of the narrative of the Thargoids and the emerging stories surrounding them. We've started to see the threads being discovered by the community in the past couple of months and 2.4 will be largely about pulling on those threads and unravelling more of the story behind them. The way that the update will be delivered won't be like any other we've done and will focus on narrative – a narrative that we certainly don’t want to spoil. For that reason, it may appear as if there’s a lack of new information about 2.4… we’ll keep things going with sneak peeks here and there, but we really want you to discover 2.4’s big secrets for yourselves.

Aside from the major update and the focus on narrative, there will obviously be improvements, bug fixes, and balancing changes to various aspects also. These will be included as part of the patch notes as usual.

Sounds like not much is coming other than more new objects out in galaxy to find and interact with in basic ways. More eyeball candy. Then add on some basic quality of life improvements. I really don't think there is going to be a big update like Horizons ever again at the extremely slow rate this has been developed.

Pro Tip - hire less artists and more engineers / designers. Maybe you'll push things along a little faster.

Is the Panther Clipper part of update 2.4?

That's September.

Frontier didn't run out of money, they already had millions of pounds in cash afaik. I think this investment was also strategic to have a big partner to promote their games in China and other Asian territories.

They didn't say they wouldn't take investments afaik.

So maybe the last Friday of the last week of September is more likely. We need new stuff sooner though.

When did they say they've been working on this since before 2.0?

Updates we payed for ie 2.0 - 2.4 which should have been released within 1 year (as advertised) have taken over 2 years...

We are still being told to wait a few more weeks/months with no information and even have forum folks telling us to be patient after all these delays. I was patient, now i just feel disappointed and slightly conned.

The ship launched fighters update and the "Muticrew" update should have been rolled into 1 and even then would have been pretty lackluster.

"Horizons" was the ability to land on a few planets, engineers, the frankly embarrassing implementation of "multicrew" and a breadcrumb trail of cutscene which makes GW2's "living story" look like a literary masterpiece....

Are people still wondering why the community is starting to complain?

Not holding out for 3.0 either, i expect core mechanic updates to be added (like every game with ongoing development) but if FD expect any extra £ for updates which many of us have been waiting for since beta/release they have lost the plot entirely.

I have noticed a gradual drop in the quality of ED updates since release and "Multicrew" has to be the worst yet, shockingly bad... let's hope they fix up soon.

I don't recall anything saying a season would be limited to 1 year. Can you provide a link?

To be fair, they did say it would be roughly a year when they originally showed us 2.0, but they where just estimates and as we all know things can take a lot longer and also things change. The fact it has taken them longer then planned doesn't bother me too much. I have a sneaky suspician that they have been working on 3.0 at the same time as 2.xxx so they can release a whole expansion in one go, but that is just guess work.

Fair enough, but searching for anything from FD saying that turns up nothing so far. Only assumptions from players and 3rd parties.

It's kind of like that 10 year plan thing. DB said that he'd like to see the game go for 10 years, but there's nothing from FD on a 10 year plan. In fact, the only plan I could find was the 8 year life span from their public official documents. That 8 year life span is still in the current public information.

We tend to take things that are said over and over and consider them to be fact as long as nobody disputes it. Something from FD themselves would be nice, but anything else is just assumption.

They specifically avoided saying exactly how long it would be, because they no doubt expected a bit of slippage. However, most people generally expected it to be 12 months or so, and I rather suspect so did Frontier.

My only worry about it taking nearly twice as long as they (probably) expected is that (1) they might run out of money (but the Xbox & PS4 ports seemed to have saved them), and (2) Star Citizen might eventually overtake them (now looking more likely, assuming 3.0 isn't a complete mess).
