The way I see it and going on previous "Betas" even if the Thargoid stuff was in it and people actually did what they should be doing in a "Beta" it would still come out half and broken then needing a patch a week or two later.

If it should be there, maybe it should as it might well save FD a whole host of salt shoveling come late August or maybe it shouldn't and we all get to go "oh my" when it does get released. Im waiting for the patch notes and looking forward to seeing what's in that before I start throwing my toys out of the pram.

The thargoid base stuff seems to work ok with out any testing. It was only the Alien ruins that wasn't working a d they had to do some under the hood stuff to get it working properly. I have to assume that any new stuff like that will be mostly fine from now on.

Not for me. I do testing. But it's up to you what you do in your beta time.

It also is used for stress tests. There a myriad of things that are done with BETA. However you can't do an accurate BETA testing in video games without having a complete product because if you only give part of it the unknown variable that wasn't tested it could break the code that was BETA tested again in other ways or maybe the fixes won't work. When adding any code it has the potential to mess with other coding that is already stable. Hence bugs pop up in areas that were already perfectly okay when new coding is introduced into the formula. Also as I stated it's not about wanting to know the story early it has everything to do with testing the produce to report the bugs. This is my favourite post of the thread so far, the one where he tells Bran that he doesn't know what he's talking about and patiently explains some things about software development to him. Cracking stuff this, it's helping my bacon butty and pint of Tropicana smooth go down a treat.

You really think that the beta is the only place where tests are conducted? I might be wrong, but afaik there´s at least a QA-Department, if not a closed player group and other possibilities to test software without having to reveal everything in the beta. No one (at least no one I know) wants to play at release day having 1000s of tutorials up how the content can be revealed.

Not sure, I skimmed through because consoles dont even get betas so its got naff all to do with me anyway. Im just wasting time between mode switching fer better missions, thought Id take a gander through.

OP, as much as I do stick with consoles only these days, I have done a bit of beta testing in the past...not on this game partly cos Im too lazy and jaded with the game to care that much to pay fer the privilege but point being, yer not taking part in a beta to please yerself on all the lovely content. Thats not how betas work in any game...yer there to stress test whatever content they allow ye to have and thats that. Storyline content can be tested privately as really the only test needed with that is whether it runs at all alongside the main content, so testing that would be more localized to a chosen few testers.

Im pretty dumb by many standards and Im sure as hell no fanboi or white knight, but even I know how betas work and what they are supposed to achieve. Players who buy into it have only really bought the right to logging into a beta...they dont get to dictate to anyone what or how the beta is run, doesnt matter who they are or what rights they think they have. Bottom line being that if its not in the beta, then its because they dont want every Tom and Harry involved...and thats that OP. The rest of the complaint is just forum noise that will almost certainly fall on deaf ears because its pretty laughable when ye read it ^

Well, as much as it pains me to say, FD's record of bug free releases, or bug minimal, has not been stellar.
With that, your point of not having everything revealed, complete with videos and step by step instructions on how to game it, is well taken.

But you're missing the point here. This isn't about seeing the "new" stuff. This is about testing everything to make sure it's up to speck and report any bugs. Why do you think that your definition of beta is correct? A beta is unfinished/untested code. The betas that FD run contain unfinished/untested code - just because they contain a lot of released code also doesn't make them any less a beta.

I don't even understand what you are asking for. You don't want to play a beta? Don't. You want it to be called something else? Call it what you like, I doubt it will bother anyone else.

I stopped after the title as I guessed, quite righly as it happens, what the complaint was...they want all the toys and they want them right now because they have rights see and they paid fer those rights...welcome to the internet ^

How do you know your guess is correct? :D I don't understand what the OP is actually complaining about at all! Most of the post is just rambling about what a beta should be (all of which appears to be wrong).

I've read the OP's post twice (just so I don't miss anything) and I disagree.

The beta testing we pay for is completely optional and it's only 1 of several stages that Frontier do. It's entirely up to the developer which parts are tested by the public. I don't think the new Thargoid story content should be in the beta and I'm glad it isn't.

If you don't like how paid-for public betas are done then don't pay for it in the future.

My opinion.

I don't hate Frontier I am saying I disagree with their approach. I do realize that none of us own this game but have a license to play it. That Frontier owns it and they can do whatever they want with it and they can use the word/term "BETA" out of definition and practice as they want. But it doesn't mean their practice is right just because they "do it" and haven't been forced to stop through lawsuit (not a threat just saying).

While I DO agree on the point regarding the charging of players to test, this just goes to highlight the fact that many players are NOT interested in testing, just a sneak preview of content. Sad state of affairs, cash grab by FD and a serious lack of foresight from players alike.....

Up until recently (afaik) there were no public Betas, only paid. As for being optional, is that a joke? I can see how some would see that as funny being as FD has been proven to ignore the testers. Beta testing is NOT optional, for players OR FD. ED needs decent betas, otherwise we are just going to continue down the usual bug ridden crash-fests and Borked game sessions. All Betas should be free, no ifs, no buts. WE are doing FD a service, least they can do is kiss us before we get mounted :)
