Engineers unknown fragment for Palin

Don't bother going there. It's broken. There's a marker for SHIP WRECKAGE but it bugs out and you end up chasing invisible items across the surface. Nothing to scan, shoot or collect.

just went there as well, and the Ship Wreckage marker actually moves around under ground

This!

Took me about 2 hours of supercruising around in HIP 14479 to get all 25. Actually took me 3 hours but an hour was wasted trying to find UA's in any other system besides HIP 14479. I collected 24 fragments in 2 hours in HIP 14479 and 1 fragment in 1 hour in all other adjacent systems.

Thanks for this tip cmdr. o7

Seconding this. I visited 2 of the recent crash site suggesions, and one was below ground moving (bugged), and the other was above ground moving. I then went directly to the coordinates suggested and found nothing, nor anything on the scanner. I'm not sure how these are meant to work, but it seems bugged.

Instead, at HIP 14479 just pick a planet (I chose HIP 14479 7, the furthest out with rings) and circle around it (around the rings is a good speed) and keep an eye out in the navigation panel for Unidentified Signal Source.

When it pops up, lock the destination, face it, and see if it's an "Anomaly Detected (Threat 4)" one. If not, move on and keep looking.

If so, exit supercruise just like any other destination when in range. Gently bump the object to destroy it (5-10k an hour. if it's too slow, you'll move it forward, try harder), and you'll get 1-2 fragments to cargo scoop, each giving you several towards the 25. I did 4-5 USSs to get all 25, and it took about 45 minutes. I did miss 3 USSs by not paying attention. :)

Just keep going around the rings, but they'll pop up seemingly anywhere in the system at random.

I go to hip 14479 and the near dark region system, I found some unk. art. but now, I'm flying here from 2-3 hours and I don't find anithing......Can you suggest me a good place to find them? Thanks

Thanks for this CMDR. I can confirm that this system works. I just spent about an hour intercepting these USSs and got 30 of them.
I flew an orbit around the star @ approx 500LS out and the USSs seemed to pop up with great frequency. Ramming the objects @ approx 80K frequently yielded 2 clusters at a time, making the job go much faster.

Also I can confirm that traveling to all the coordinates and crash sites reported by others yielded nothing. Either nothing there, or the wreck marker was 'inside' the planet. This method seems very broken or unreliable and I'd just avoid it altogether.

Thanks again to all who have contributed to this thread. Without it I'd have never figured this out. A Frustrating and buggy design for a very contentious game mechanic. Ugh.

Followed this and was done in 3/4 hour :)

Donate:25 Unknown Fragments
- Go to HIP 14479 (or anywhere in "aries dark region" of systems)
- Fly around star parrale 1000 away from star
- Look for Unidentified signal sources and scan them
- Find ones that say "Anomaly detected" once scanned
- drop in and find "unknown artifact" and let it scan you
- ram it and collect the fragments (3 per artifact you find). Dont shoot it or u onyl get 1
*****Alternate Planet bound version: (Locate crashed anacondas and use SRV to shoot canisters and pick up then log out and back in to refresh the canisters
- Izanami A 4 A (-2.25 145.13) I used this one. Was in a crater. Couldnt fine ones below but listing in case you can.
- CETI SECTOR RD-T B3-2, Planet 1. (-3.92, 121.46)
- HIP 17403 A 4 A (-34.981, -141.413)
- HIP 17862 6C A at coordinates 30.3398,-98.5876)

Gah, it took me about two hours of looking for USS-s to get four of those fragments, so I can look forward to ten more hours of watching my nav panel. Great.

I know this thread is old but, it looks like a year later, I will be doing the same. I totally understand that Devs want you to earn your way. But, some of these requirements are ridiculous. It would help if the Engineers would list all of their requirements from the beginning. For example, I did a bunch of missions for Sirius Corp to unlock Marco Qwent, it would have been nice to know that I should have kept all the Modular Terminals I earned from those missions for him. No, you become Allied with Sirius, they give you the delivery mission to Qwent, you get there and he tells you that your not done grinding. Same with Selene Jean, You mine 500 Tons of anything. While you do it your picking up Painite. You go back forth from Rings to the station to unload/sell your cargo. You mine 500 tons, She tells you to bring here some Painite. Would have been nice to know that I should hang on to the Painite before hand!!!! COME ON ED! The Grind is already insane!!!!

Thanks for this! before I had finished exploring HIP 14479 I had 18; next few was but a work of minutes!

Many Thanks Harly!

I do not understand you guys since alien bases have appeared, just kill the scavengers. Unknown fragments drop of them....

Errr, no they don't. Unknown carapaces, wake scans, technology components drop from them, but not the Unknown fragments needed to unlock Professor Palin. Your linked spreadsheet is super useful though, but this is not an effective way to find Unknown Fragments. :)

Very quick and easy way to collect Unknown Fragments required to unlock Professor Palin. Travel to System: HIP 17403 Moon: A 4 A Coords: -34.98, -141.41. This is one of the Alien crash sites discovered ages ago. Ignore the "Crashed Vessel" POI that appears in the Navigation panel as you approach this moon, it's buggy and points to a blank location miles from the site. Go to the exact coordinates I've given above instead. The site is against the side of the small impact mountain at the centre of the large crater that the coordinates take you to.

At this site there are three Unknown fragments lying on the ground and two Unknown Artefacts too. Shoot the artefacts and they'll disintegrate into an additional Unknown Fragment yielding 5 UFs in total. Collect the UFs in your SRV, they each count as 3 items in your materials inventory, so that's 15 UFs. Now just mode swap from Open to Solo or vice-versa to cause all items to re-spawn. You can very easily collect 30 unknown fragments in less than 10 minutes on the surface and it's guaranteed, no RNG crap! :) The only thing that can go wrong is if you visit the site in Open shortly after someone else has harvested all the items. In this case simply switch into Solo straight away.

Well I'm having difficulty with this part of the game too. I keep finding UAs from signal sources, three so far for what should be 6 fragments.

Problem is they disappear before getting into my cargo rack after scooping, so every time my cargo rack is empty.

This is very frustrating, what am I doing wrong? Is this what you need the special resistant cargo rack for?

I assumed you can only buy them when you are friendly with Palin, so they are not needed for just collecting unknown fragments.

Or is this just a bug?

Are you shooting the UAs so they break into fragments and then collecting the fragments? If so, you'll find them in your Materials, not your Inventory.

Also, they don't have corrosive effects. You can hold fragments indefinitely.

OK cool thanks, I always assume something is probably difficult when it turns out it's easy really.

I dunno why you'd look for chemical manipulators on planets, the description says frequently found on haulage vessels.

I just turned in 25 all at once to Palin, worked for me. ™

Because finding them incidentally while prospecting, or getting them as mission rewards, is preferable to some people (and less time consuming), than waiting for wanted haulers and T9s in nav beacons, or alternatively (something that is completely out for me) shooting innocent traders.

It is utterly ridiculous that explorers are forced to become Anarchy system pirates of innocent vessels for their components once destroyed (so murder, really, not piracy), in order to get mats for an FSD. If it was for G5 plasma accelerator mods, that would be something else, but this means I will never have a lot of these because the way I choose to play the game (which is not so weird, not wanting to kill innocent people in a universe where reputation is everything), it is bad game design, it's stupid and indefensible. /end rant.

Palin is the only one that is a truly idiotic grind, the others are just about justifiable imo, even quent, wasn't hard, as I have said before.
