Curse you Python! Stop being so damn useful!

Nope. I used to fly a fighting Python, but decided that even flying FAOFF most of the time it simply can't handle the ship I consider to be its nemesis--the Clipper. It also has troubles with one of the more agile Fed mediums. If I'm smuggling goods, or doing missions (other than assassination / wetwork / combat ones) I really shouldn't be fighting at all--it's a waste of time, and after losing two of them in fights I should have avoided from the get-go, I decided that the Python would be decked out for maximum jump range and cargo capacity, and all fighting would be left to the rest of the bruisers in my lineup (including a Cutter, Anaconda, Vulture, FDL, Viper, and Clipper).

I never actually owned one back when they were agile beasts, and if they were as agile as a Clipper they'd be terrific fighters.

Never got to experience the original agile Python either, pretty glad I don't know what I missed there actually.

I have no problem ROFLStomping anything PVE related in any of my ships, but admittedly, all my ships carry pretty (more like absolutely) full weapons loadouts, and either shield or armor upgrades depending what the ship favors for my multi mission runners, my dedicated combat ships of course get shields and armor both. I don't believe in the unarmed/unshielded approach to Elite, even though I know it works most of the time.

Even my Suicidewinder has g5 DD 2a performance thrusters.......

But the Python does have one weakness, as HeavyGroovez pointed out, it doesn't stand much of a chance in PvP, so maybe that is sort of balanced? Can something really be 'OP' if its only ever used against PVE? Whenever I think about balance, it really only applies to PvP since competition between players needs to be fair.

I was very excited when I finally procured my Python, as now I could have the mining ship with the cargo capacity and fire power to defend it. And the mining & hauling worked out just as I had hoped it would, but I still had to run from pirates. I could fight them off long enough to get away which was great, but I hated the constant interuptions or having to sell everything once I left the instance (pirates only come after first start, so if you have no cargo, they leave, then you can mine until you're full.)

So I started upgrading the hard points and shields, and then realized that for the money I was spending, I could purchase an Anaconda and do everything better, except land at an outpost. So I dropped the Python and bought the Annie, and while I was able to quickly earn a crap ton mining for CGs with the Python, I reached a point where it wouldn't make much sense for me to invest any more money into it to try to make it more than a mission ship.

Really it just comes down to preference. I don't like having multiple ships and two is the most that I want to have at once. Once I'm rich and credits don't matter so much, that may change but for now I simply can't afford to have more than two. I even sold my beloved ASP X when I upgraded the Annie's FSD. I have kept the FDL, but after some module swapping to fit her for combat, the Annie can stay in a CZ or Haz RES for much longer, so I haven't flown it in forever.

But the time is coming to dust it off, as I've been exploring for the past couple of months and am on my way back to the bubble. I've a powerful urge to jump in to something bright yellow, stuipd fast, always on the verge of catching fire, and crazy dangerous!

Just keep the pointy end facing away from you and you'll be fine. The sparks and flames intimidation effects, like warpaint

I wasn't really trying to say the Orca was better than the Anaconda, or the reverse, more than the Orca is 100% capable of doing all the same stuff and in my subjective opinion a lot more fun to fly in the process of running missions. Lots of supercruising and docking runs and all.

No it can't, the Anaconda is much better suited for low star density areas and it definetly can't do passenger missions or trading like the Anaconda. The handling is painful but objectively not a huge deal.

Yeah I use her for material gathering. Takes approximately 5 seconds to kill a T9 with triple G5 double shot frags with screening shell. An Elite Conda might last 30 seconds approx.

Combat in it is dull as hell. Stuff dies so fast with the engied frags that its pointless.

Ironically the best PvE all rounder stands no chance in PvP.

Depends, I mostly did PvE but the few times I did PvP I was competent and managed to be at the same level or better than most of the commanders I fought against in a Python.

You're quite welcome! I spend so much time in mine it's not funny.

And this was never meant to become the Orca vs. Anaconda thread, but since it's been leaning that way...

I've blown up my share of Anacondas with an Orca, and they've always been tough fights - fights I'd much rather avoid.
I've also blown up my share+ of things with an Anaconda, and they're much easier fights. Hands down, the Anaconda packs more firepower.
But even with G5 Dirty Drives, the Orca can outmaneuver it. This holds true for all Saud Kruger ships - their maneuverability is exceptional, and they're fast - easily on par with most Gutamaya ships, though Gutamaya has a hands-down advantage when it comes to raw shield strength.

That's Elite: Balance for you - Fast ship, not so much shield or hull. Slow ship, better shields, thicker hull.

Which really means, it comes down to play-style - do YOU play better with a lumbering hulk of a ship bristling with weapons, or something sleek and deft, with fewer weapons and rely more on finesse? To this, there's no right or wrong answer. Which is why there is ultimately no "best ship".

Let's rewind time a bit, back to the arcade days of Street Fighter. We had quite a selection of characters, each with their own strengths and weaknesses - fast, nimble, barely dressed Chun Li, completely average and basically identical Ken and Ryu, massive and slow E.Honda and Zangief, and the impossibly slow Dhalsim with incredible range. Every player had their favorite, and if you were good, you'd dominate by taking advantage of your advantages - be it bouncing everywhere as Chun Li, keeping opponents at bay as Dhalsim, or luring them in and overpowering them as Honda or Zangief, or even just plain old perfectly averaging them to death as Ken or Ryu - personally I was Guile fan - a little slower, some very tricky maneuvers to pull off, and capable of pulling anyone out of the air.

The same holds true, even more true, here - I bounty hunt in a Beluga, people laugh. I open fire, they take selfies with me. Would I suggest everyone jump in a War-Whale and have at it? Not unless I was getting a kick-back from the insurance company - but I'd certainly recommend trying it, because you just might like it. Or you might hate it, but at least then you'd know. I own and have flown every available ship, some I have multiples of just to try different things with and see and feel what their strengths and weaknesses are FOR ME.

Sure, some ships are charming for certain people while other hate them, that's a subjective topic. I don't like the Anaconda, I did engineer one a lot and I still found it boring, I only used it for the SLF and solid rock shields but I still never say that my Asp X is better, I like it more but it's just not better.

Nah, I have killed FAS's and FDL's in my trusty Python (I mean players, not NPCs, those are cannon meat). Python isn't the best choice for PvP but it's a plausible alternative.

Finally found one thing the Python is bad at - scooping cargo containers.
Always did it before in smaller, more manuverable, ships.
Actually just destroyed a mission target after missing it on 4 tries. That ain't never happened before.

Try the FDL sometime.

I've had my python now for a few weeks and just wasn't 'feeling' it. But last night I had a bit of an epiphany!

It's a super sized Viper IV! I've been flying all along with the mindset of a dropship pilot...Now I'm almost liking it! Almost!

I saved up for a couple months to have enough to buy an Anaconda and upgrade it. Once I got the upgrades done and all the engineering done I ran a few missions to make some of my cash back. but now its parked and I'm back in the Python. I don't do a lot of combat in it though. I pretty much stick to my FAS for combat.

what is your pitch rate?

My own? I generally don't reveal that kind of information until I at least have a few drinks in me.

For me, from pretty early on in my Elite Dangerous career I always wanted a Python.

Prior to the arrival of the Cutter and Corvette, the Python and the Anaconda were the top two ships in the game and so were natural goals for many CMDRs. In the end the Python was deemed TOO good and those long term players will remember the nerf it got back Jan 2015.

Also money couldn't be earned back then the way it can now so it was a long term goal when you only had a few mil under your belt. It felt great to have finally traded, explored and fought enough to afford one and has always been a high level work-horse which lends itself so well to the game mechanics that it's the likely reason for its popularity.

Massive D did a great 3 part round up on why the Python remains so popular which is worth checking out :

Even though my Corvette has now superseded my Python as the flag-ship of my fleet, 'Grey Vengeance' will never leave my ship roster. With specialised modules, an A-rated build, custom finishes, the ability to equip a 7A Reactor & 7A Power Coupling and having been engineered to perfection, it is to me, more of an old friend and a legend, than a disposable item.

Excuse me for seeming uninformed.
I haven't read the thread,, tho I've seen it get bumped too many times....

Am I the only person who refuses to buy a python...
This was my ship progression. Adder-dolphin-aspx-T7(just cause I lime the boxxey space trucking look) -anaconda.. I'm currently planning on picking up a cutter upon my return to the bubble..
50% count for imps.. ..

Idk I just don't have any interest in ITT.

Well that's a perfectly reasonable and understandable opinion to have.

The beauty of popular and heavily populated MMOs is that the player community bring a broad spectrum of diversity and taste - that's what makes it interesting. Thankfully there is no one ship that is perfect, or head and shoulders above the rest in every way ... otherwise we'd all be flying it.

New CMDRs should continue to champion alternate progression paths and play style options for the good of the game as a whole.

I've gotta say the Python only hit me on my 3rd or 4th try.

At the beginning, while pretty much only caring for combat, I used my trusty Gunship and then switched over to the Conda. I tried the Python in that time a few times, but wasn't impressed at all.

Since I've put more and more effort into engineering, the Python has become THE ship for me - by far the best medium ship IMHO. I already own two of them, one exculsively for combat, the other as a mission runner and engineer mat collector. Both with engineered jumprages 20ly+, pack one hell of a punch with those 3 large hardpoints, can land anywhere, nice shields... Nothing to not love about it!

All in all, the overall best ship in the game at the moment for me!

1000+ hours in the game and never used the python more than 10min. I think it was the last ship i bought after i had every other ship just to try it out, bigger ships do everything better beside the landing on smaller pads, but who needs that anyway [big grin] For my taste it has too weak shields and not enough fire power. But maybe im alone with this opinion, is something wrong with me?
