Elite: Dangerous Mega Survey Results

I am not. The basic meaning of the word majority means greater number. Open out of the three got the greater number. I think you misunderstand what the word means.

With respect, yes you are.
Yes, the word majority does mean greater .. but in the context of votes like this, it is always "the greater number of votes" which has been set at 50%+1 .. this is an internationally recognised and approved and agreed upon value.

.. but sure.. fine .. let's use majority meaning "greater number."

Open players: 6,168
Non-open players: 6,433
Non-open players = majority.

So, yeah.. either way, still not majority.

The thing is: You are correct and Max is also correct. Nobody says that you are wrong, but you are saying that Max is wrong. The problem is: He isn't. And that's where you are wrong...

The word majority has more than one definition: It means the greatest part OR the greater number. It also has several other definitions, but these are the two we are talking about and both are confirmed by oxford dictionary. I provided a link earlier in this thread. So while you are correct that majority often means more than 50%, Max is also correct that it can mean something different. Since the survey isn't about elections or yes no decisions or politics AND it's quite clear that less than 50% voted for Open, chances are VERY high that we don't talk about your definition when we say majority because it wouldn't make any sense.

We are talking about a poll/vote
The majority didn't vote for Open.

If I wanted to break down my coffee beans I would use the word grind.
Some people at the late night club like to...

I am applying Majority correctly under the circumstances. Max is not correct in any capacity.

Interesting to see the majority use open play.

Absolutely, but only when you take into consideration open v. solo and open v. private as individual results. However, if you add solo and private together, you'll find the majority don't play open. :)

Yes, in an environment like politics, governments and YES OR NO VOTES, it's quote important that you have a majority if you have a binary choice. The survey isn't about a binary choice but about 3 choices. What comes close in the political definition you are using? Yes, No and abstain from voting.
Yes: 45%
No: 35%
Abstain: 20%

Yes has a majority with just 45%.

It's a matter of definitions.

No, it in this sense as having over 50% doesn't give any extra meaning to the vote like it does in politics. Maybe you think I want to abolish solo and PG. I don't. I think people should play how they want to. I used to play jn open all the time, but lately I have been playing a PG. It is not a competition where the winners get to decide how the game is made or anything.

We are not talking about binary choices, we are not talking about voting for something. The claim is, out of three groups, the biggest group plays in Open, which is the majority out of three, not two.

Hello Commanders,

I have just released the results of the Elite: Dangerous Mega Survey. You can find all the links and my comments here: https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/6stz53/elite_dangerous_mega_survey_results/

Enjoy!

didn't read all the posts, but can you do similar survey for us here ?
(and the results could be interesting comparing types of players here and on Reddit, you might have to put a distinguishing question in to see how many redditers are also doing this survey)

The majority ? 49% ? I'd have said the majority - 51% - don't play in open.

Thank you, Another one in the majority of people that understand what majority is.
Have a lovely evening Sir.

lol ,your funny

No, what Yes has in your example is a plurality; it is not a majority.
And again, no, it's not limited to politics - it's simple mathematics.

No. The Majority is not playing in Open. The Majority is playing in either Solo or GP. You see... you need to count everyone that voted and analyze the data. That data has shows that there is a Majority of people that does not play in Open. As I mentioned earlier to Max Factor; you are mixing up Plurality with Majority.

It is as simple as that.

What? Of course it does. Over 50% means you have the most votes out of everyone. It has nothing to do with politics; politics is just an easy example.
Open does not have the most votes overall. It has more votes compared to Solo, or to PG; but it does not have more votes over all. That makes it a plurality.

I haven't made any assumptions as to your agenda, wrt: abolishment of solo/pg. So no, I don't think that. :)

Or you could say the majority are playing in open and group or open and solo. THAT IS NOT WHAT THE POLL IS ABOUT.

The majority of ED players didn't vote in the poll. There is no reason to assume that the opinions of ED subreddit contributors are representative of ED players as a whole.
