Excessive background perspective movement in stations - Oculus Rift Cv1

Greetings, long time player first time poster so please accept my apologies for anything incorrect.

I have two Rift CV1 questions.

On Friday just passed my Rift CV1 arrived. With much glee I ran the setup and after getting past the switch from screen to VR I was awed by the scale and everything. Very happy. However I noticed two things immediately.

1. The in-game graphics options/menu is no longer as extensive as it once was and is now limited to selecting Low to Ultra and Vr low to VRUltra, there are no longer any in game super-sampling options etc etc. Is this correct? (does the oculus debug tool still work?)

The reason I ask is because whilst in the game I changed in between settings Low - then back to VRUltra - and very little seems to happen with the exception of a very strange perspective related occurrence (mostly in stations) that no amount of googling has so far helped uncover an answer.

2. When I first fired up elite all the perspectives and their associated movements where perfect, for example if in a station and in the cockpit if I moved my head the cockpit remained perfectly static and the view into the station was only related to the position of my head, so in essence it was static and barely moved if at all. However since bouncing between settings the the cockpit is still perfect but the background perspective in the station seems noticeably different in that background station elements move a lot more now. For example if I am in a station, and looking directly ahead out my ships window and move my head from left to right the station elements closest to me seem to disproportionately move or warp from left to right or vice versa when I move my head. It seems that the background movement is grossly overcompensated where it was not like this before.

Have I missed something? has anyone else experienced this? Are there terms for this? Is it normal or did I break something? (many more than two questions I know - apologies).

System is a new 1080gti, i7, 32RAM etc.

Just a quick answer as in a rush
1) look a little closer - expand the graphics tab and you will see supersampling and HMD quality. Keep SS at 1 but alter the HMD quality to suit. The debug tool still works, but HMD Quality IS the debug tool incorporated into the game these days. Do not compromise on HMD quality, that gives you the sharpness.

2)It sounds like you could have ASW on which forces frame rate to 90 or 45 fps. You certainly don't need that with your card, so hit CTRL and number pad 1 to turn it off. CTRL and 4 turns it back on again. Try that and see if that sorts it. If not there is something else going on.

Have fun!

i don't have your problem. Ingame suspersampling is present but i prefer to use the debug tool, it seems to work better for me (i use 1.6 tryed higher values but quality is same as 1.6). Graphic option (3D) set all to ultra where possible, terrain work to max possible and changed the value for ultra to 300 in the GraphicsConfiguration.xml file planet section.
<Ultra>
<LocalisationName>$QUALITY_ULTRA;</LocalisationName>
<TextureSize>8192</TextureSize>
<AtmosphereSteps>6</AtmosphereSteps>
<CloudsEnabled>true</CloudsEnabled>
<WorkPerFrame>300</WorkPerFrame>
<TexturePoolBudget>100</TexturePoolBudget>
</Ultra>

Disable asynchronous spacewarp from debug tool

You have to press the + sign on the side, I use the mouse to do that cause my hotas only opens the presets like you said.

I agree, I think this is what you need, the + on the left of the Quality setting - brings back all the configuarble options to angst over, play with, get confused by and cause sleepless nights wondering if you could 'up this and down that or up that and up that and down those'.

Hi All

Thanks for the replies, it is hugely appreciated.

I am work at the moment but as soon as I get home I will try all these suggestions.

:)

I too suspect these are ASW artefacts.
Sometimes when changing and swapping a lot of settings it could leave the game running a bit slow.

I recommend restarting the game.

This sounds very much like 'pupil swim' to me. Very likely caused by how you have the headset positioned on your face. Try lowering it (or raising it) so the foam at the top of the device sits on just above your brow and then pivot the HMD downward so that the lower part of the foam rests on your cheeks. Evey head is different so you may need to fiddle around to get the perfect position.

Maybe re-run the Oculus calibration using the green horizontal and vertical lines to get the HMD positioning and angle, as well as IPD, set up correctly - rather than just fiddling about? Especially for a new user. Once you are sure about the setup, then fiddling about is just fine. ;)

That makes no difference, the green line test is for IPD only not ensuring you have the device strapped on your face in the correct position. You can see the visual distortion from pupil swim a lot more clearly in a station in Elite due to the amount of geometry - its a great place to ensure you have your device fitted correctly....

Very curious as to what effect the FOV slider has in VR.
I'm sure I randomly fiddled with it at some point, but I don't recall any visual/perspective differences regardless of whether the slider was all the way left or all thee way right.

First of let begin with saying a big thank you to everyone who has posted a response and tried to help, what an astounding introduction to the community.

I will be at home tomorrow night and able to work through each of these responses. For future reference I will write notes as I go and post a detailed run through of the process with images as well.

If I fix the issue I will see if I can update the thread title as well to accurately reflect the nature of the issue, although I am not sure if this is possible.

Once again, a huge thank you.

Hello!

i get this perspective shift just as OP has described as well. It's easier to reproduce if you are in the hangar in a large ship. As there are plenty of straight lines in the ceiling it's easier to notice. In my case I notice it on the upper part of my view in the rift. If the lines/ ducts are coming straight at me while staring ahead they shift. when I turn my head to the right it's just like if I also "strafe" my head to the left and vice versa. This means that a line centred between my eyes in the ceiling moves towards my right eye if I twist my head to the right.

There is a keybind for expanding/collapsing nested menus.

As for 2: Probably just a matter of resetting position...

In my case resetting position has not changed what I experience. Doing the rift setup again dis not help either. That said, it is not a big problem for me as it is a subtle distortion.
