think I'll try mining....

what do I do? fire torpedo's at a roid and then cargo scoop ;)

anyone any advice??

also anyone suggest a conda mining build?

thanks

ps. I'm in work. not being lazy just don't have time to look at YouTube.

though i have done none myself by my understanding youll want some prospecting limpets and gathering ones then a mining laser

I have recently got into mining too. You will need a limpet controller, Refinery and if you have the space a prospector.
Don't forget to stock limpets before you leave the station.

My tip for mining is - Shave your head first.

It will save you the pain of pulling your hair out :)

Nah. Premiership football on the radio, and a beer.

Not torpedos .. fit a mining laser

And find metallic asteroids to mine if you want metals, you can also mine ice rings.

what kinda stuff is worth the most?

also think this is a good set up?

https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/ana...A=.Aw18ZVA=..EweloBhBmVagpgQwOYBsEhADgGwFYg==

The 3 P's .. (in descending order of value) are Painite, Palladium, Platinum ... But there are ways and ways, things like Osmium might be more likely to turn up in missions (which I tend to take when I get back and provide there and then, from my cargo stock). Industrial and Hi Tech economies in boom are a good place to build rep for mining missions and if you do like mission taking, ice rings are worth considering, even though generally the minerals are worth less ton for ton in commodites.

Set up looks reasonable but before you start mining you need a good scan of the ring, to know what it's made of. I can't recall if a normal scan gives you that so I usually carry detailed surface scanner. You can always think of having a small recon ship for searching out good places to mine, in range of a market, with discovery and DSS scanners fitted, then you can go and get your factory ship. K class stars are a good place to start when looking for metallic rings iirc.

Here's my advice for mining ....

1) Take more than one Collector Limpet Controller. At a minimum, have one limpet per small mining laser and three per medium mining laser.

2) Bind the Collector Limpets to the same button as the mining laser. This way, the collectors will automatically go out as soon as you start mining and will replenish themselves instantly when one of them dies. Put the prospector limpet controller on fire button number 2. You won't have to switch out firegroups ever.

3) Skip the small mining lasers if you have a choice. A medium mining laser is 3.5 times as fast but only takes twice the power draw. The optimal number of medium mining lasers depends on your Power Distributor: PD of 8 = 4 med lasers, PD of 6 or 7 = 3 med laser, for everyone else 2 is the most efficient. If you have to use small mining lasers, there's no need to use more than 2 unless you've engineer your PD for charge enhanced (or whatever it's called). [This is because all ships with a PD capable of handling more than 2 small mining lasers already have medium hardpoints so should be using medium mining lasers anyway]

4) Finally, the rating of your prospector limpet controller controls the number of fragments you get out of an asteroid. So go with A-rated ones if at all possible. If the 1A is all you can afford, stick with that until you can get a 3A or 5A (although I don't see much need for more than two limpets at a time.)

Related question for the 2049ers among you - how does mining work outside the bubble? Are there still resource extraction sites in planetary rings? Are they all low/no danger, pirate free?

You dont need to go to res, anywhere in the ring works. Not sure about pirates, probably none as with res

There are no extraction sites outside the bubble. You just need to go into the ring. Sometimes when you jump in, some pirates will jump in after you. They will always appear at the point you waked in, so what miners usually do is boost a few times as soon as they get into the ring. That way the pirates will appear outside of sensor range and not bother you while you mine.

I do most of my mining outside the bubble as all the rings are pristine. The main problem is finding a good place to sell.

how does mining work outside the bubble?

No resource extraction sites outside bubble.

It's LAWLESS space which means no consequences for shooting any innocent NPC miner and taking his cargo but no bounty on pirates either, unless you KWS scan them first. You will usually see a wing of pirates, attracted by your wake drop when you first arrive. If you've no cargo 99% sure they won't attack you (not interested in limpets). After a fly past they will high wake and you won't see any more but they do sometimes fly back before they wake out, so be aware if you started mining. Risk of engaging them of course, is you'll get no form of security help no matter what and if your canopy busts it's a brown trouser RTB in a hurry.

I always mine on the bubble edge, not TOO far from a market I suggest, a couple of jumps is OK but much more than that and it can get a little tedious returning home and going back out after a while.

Interestingly .. one system I mined at had a population of zero when I first arrived, not classified as having any type of economy. After a few visits (quite a few - in AspX at the time - I admit) I found the pirates and miners spawned by my visits and maybe even my own, raised the population of the system to 15 and today it's classed as an extraction system and now has RES there. Therefore it's possible to colonise a random system for the first time and expand the bubble .. yourself .. which is quite a cool feeling.

My mining tricks are (a) a macro that simulates holding my fire button down, so I don't get cramp from the mining laser. (b) to mine systematically, I point directly towards the planet and work my way forward on thrusters, starting at dawn and hopefully ending before sunset. (c) I personally try not to waste limpets and try to keep aware of asteroids around me so they don't crash. I'll hit the mining laser as soon as in range and when it runs out of chunks, I maneuvre over top of them so it's easy for limpets to collect quickly, as they only have to travel vertically up and down, to and from the cargo hatch.
