think I'll try mining....

Interestingly .. one system I mined at had a population of zero when I first arrived, not classified as having any type of economy. After a few visits (quite a few - in AspX at the time - I admit) I found the pirates and miners spawned by my visits and maybe even my own, raised the population of the system to 15 and today it's classed as an extraction system and now has RES there. Therefore it's possible to colonise a random system for the first time and expand the bubble .. yourself .. which is quite a cool feeling.

That is really cool :)

If you target the chunks the limpets will self destruct, so I target the prospector or the planet instead.
Also if the asteroid is spinning they can get smashed.

I came up with this Python for mining after much reading.
It made quick work of Selene.
Seems you can run another size 2 laser, or two small ones.
I'm a total noob so take that with a grain of salt.

Never use small mining lasers if you have medium hardpoints. They mine much faster than smalls. Use the 3 larges for defense and the mediums for work.

why are my limpits dying as soon as I deploy them?? my cargo doors are open. I've the prospector selected. ??

It's best to stay still since you can smack the limpets with your ship. Also if the rock is rotating fast try to mine at the pole of the rock. Your limpets are less likely to die that way.

I have three meds.
He has two but open sm slots.
As I understand, 2 meds + 2 sm < 3 med, correct?
That's an option if he doesn't want ot give up a med slot.

Am I missing something?
(Your many posts have been quite helpful.)

You need to read that again. (tl;dr: Don't use 1D Mining Lasers)

3 smalls < 1 medium

They produce less fragments per second and energy (energy from the capacitor being your limiting factor).

I was suggesting 2meds "+" 2 sm, considering it looks as if the OP has the open small hardpoints, juice and limpet capacity.
I have "3" meds on a 7a distributor.

Is there a diminishing returns I'm missing by suggesting using smaller lasers "in addition to" the medium ones?

edit: The previous = was referring to power draw, not fragments.
Sorry if that was unclear.

well this mining busines is awfully boring. bored level is elite

Lol right? I wanted to just ram my python into an asteroid when I had to mine for engineer. I would never do this for anything other than a mandatory purpose to unlock something.

But to each their own. I'm sure some people enjoy the quiet peacefulness of mining. I'd rather be blowing crap up though.

I've to upgrade my thrusters. not looking forward to it

Yes there is. Medium lasers are 1.75 times as energy efficient as small lasers. So adding small lasers will do nothing but drain your capacitor faster while producing fewer fragments.

For example, a Asp Explorer with two medium mining lasers will deplete an asteroid in about 59 seconds. If you add four extra small mining lasers, it will now take 78 seconds. The extra time is you waiting for your weapons to recharge.

The only time you should add small mining lasers is if you're maxed out on medium mining lasers and, with 4 pips to weapons, you can hold down the fire button and after you've depleted the asteroid you still have some capacitor power left. No ship does this at present, but it might be a situation if you've heavily engineered your power distributor on a ship like the Cobra or Asp.
