News Elite Dangerous 2.4 Closed Beta now over

Don't uninstall anything!!!!! especially your Frontier Elite 'product' folder

If you downloaded the closed beta all the files (15gbytes worth) are still there. The Launcher is just not showing the folder "PUBLIC_TEST_SERVER_64" in the \Frontier\EDLaunch\Products subdirectory

When the open beta happens it will use the same directory and just update the missing or new files. Saving you a massive download.

What I do
----------------------
As soon as the Closed beta started downloading, I cancelled it( it said it would take 2 hours to download).
I copied my normal Elite 15Gb folder into the folder "PUBLIC_TEST_SERVER_64" that the beta.

I then run the beta launcher Beta 'Update' button.
This saves time for a slow(or fast) downstream bandwidth connection and it also completes faster as it only needs to check downloaded the files that had changed or are new.

I've done this for every new beta and it works every time. {you don't need to do this for the incremental Beta bug fix Patches. You should just update when the launcher button prompts }

An installation log file is created automatically so you can see what the install actually does.

-------------------------------

To answer your question if you are not a beta tester, just click Update :D

Did this really work for the beta just gone?

After I downloaded it normally and was looking through the files the first thing I noticed was a new folder structure in the Win64 folder and a non descriptive file naming convention:

PUBLIC_TEST_SERVER_64\Win64\0e\e00b9444a6a208ba7245ec69b2a3780e101f4c9f

I can't see how copying a normal game install to the PUBLIC_TEST_SERVER_64 would overcome this, if anything it would add time as files would have to be removed.

Edit: I would say this was done to stop any spoilers being easily revealed.

Edit 2: My guess is that Open beta will be released today......

I always thought paying for beta if it is to "play" the game was crazy..... I paid for beta to support the development of the game, and a bit of a cheeky preview was the cherry on the icing on the cake.

I do agree you SHOULD think twice about paying for beta if you were doing it to get into the game early..... That said, this is the 1st major (as in very early) open beta, and i can only assume it is because they need as many folk as possible to stress test their back end..... with this in mind, would anyone really rather FD released an inferior product just to keep the beta testers happy?

i just want the actual game out asap in as good a state as possible, and if this means giving it to the masses to stress test sooner rather than later, then bring it on.

I did not get beta access to get into the game early. I admit I submitted only 2 or 3 bug reports this time but it was really short time. In previous betas I really tried hard to actually help than to play.

Lets be real. 80% of people in open beta will just play the game, see the new stuff and prepare for release and not report a single bug\glitch and stop playing after few days or so because no Thargoids.

I said I wont be bothered by this but 3days? That is the only complaint.

EDIT: If anything needs stress testing it is the main release which will contain much more features than current iteration. There is no point in stressing beta servers unless they give specific instructions to do something.

Anyway, thats it.

So this raises an interesting question that I was wondering about the other day.... what happens to all the BETA files when the BETA is over? Do they get uninstalled automagically or do they remain there potentially taking up loads of disk space? I know the old 2.3.10 BETA line has disappeared from the Elite Horizons Game Launcher but does anyone know if the files get removed?

As I wrote earlier. The files stay there but not visible in the launcher. Always after the beta is over and final release candidate has come out, I delete the beta folder to save myself 15gb on my SSD

To make sure I understand, I SHOULD be able to continue on as my existing commander if I load up the open beta? I'm cruising around Colonia at the moment...if I need to play the beta as a new commander in order to preserve where I am with my existing one, that's fine, I just want to sure I understand that's the deal.
