X series

X3 is the most modern of the sandbox X-series, but I'd recommend X2 first. Also get with the modding Comunity as the best content is player created.

I really liked X3, but also found the game lacked challenge from the point you could automate everything and just sit there while your NPCs were making the money.

Managing your automated empire while leading whole fleets into Xenon (or Terran) space was part of the fun for me. I also enjoyed clearing the hotspots when they'd come in with invasion fleets. I mostly piloted a Dragon, while commanding the rest of the fleet for support.

Ever tried Litcubes universe? I can only recommend it if you seek for a bit more challenge.

I think the biggest change are 2 things.
First having a real competition, there is a company that will expand and make money as you do. Building stations and getting a privat fleet to harrass you or even sabotage your efforts. By attacking stations/ tradeships ect. So you actually have to invest into military stuff and dont worry police forces will not interfere with the privat war.
Second an actual xenon threat that also expands and behaves a abit diffrent then normal and starts at the far end of the galaxy while slowly expanding, you get war reports about invasion fleets attacking close sectors and taking them over.

It adds a lot of very nice things to make empire building and large fleetmovements less of a chore. Check it out.

That sounds really good, thank you!

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I've dabbled a bit in the X series, but they never really grabbed me. I think I probably spent the most time with X2 and that's been quite a long time ago now!

X:R just looked terrible, so I never tried it.

I'll keep tabs on this one and see if it's something I'll jump into. So far it looks pretty interesting!

hi BigBANGtheory, they seem to have acknowledged your years of efforts in promoting that kind of RTS-style interface after all! :p

Thank you for that acknowledgement suffice to say I am relived and excited at the same time. To be honest and clear my objective was always to do what I thought was the right thing for X Universe in the face of "small minded" adversary. I hope it brings Egosoft much success because despite the criticism (pro's and con's) of XR I want them to succeed with X4.

Going by what they've shown of X4 at Gamescom, the game is now definitely on my radar.

I doubt it'll be able to compete with the exhilarating feeling of the ships in Elite, nor will it have any chance to compete with the impeccable visual artist work that's being wasted on the trainwreck that is Star Citizen. But it looks like it captures the "seemless" 1st person experience of Star Citizen, will be an actual game unlike Star Citizen and will not suffer from the total lack of meaningful direct interactiveness like Elite's Milky Way representation, nor from the pretentious second life aspiration of both. Wait for ship transfers?! Duck that! Teleportation between ships as a gamified (purchasable, upgradeable etc.) ingame mean to switch between ships? Hell yeah!

The only feature that would make it perfect for me, that I however don't expect to see anytime soon in there, would be online coop with friends.

People discuss, debate and even argue about which space sim is best, totally miss the point.

There is no spoon ... I mean, "best".

Each game has its own look and feel. Want huge fleet management against other players? Eve Online. Want to fly your own ship in a realistic universe? Elite. Want something trying to be everything all at once? Star Citizen. Want station and empire building with a storyline? X series ... and it goes on, with each game out there having its own little corner of the space sim genre.

Where people go wrong is to try to make one game be more like another. I've said over and over on this forum, that people should let Frontier make Elite what they want to make it. People come from other game communities, and try to make this game more like that game, and that's the mistake. This (I hope) can also apply to X4. Let Egosoft make it what they want to make it, and enjoy the game for what it is.

This line of argumentation seems to be the goto excuse for any old poo these games come up with (or don't in some cases). It's a rather mentally isolated, limited way of thinking.

If people play any of those games and find a feature that another game has would improve their experience, they're absolutely right to suggest the game would be better with feature X (or without). It's up to the devs to decide whether that's feasible, realistic or beneficial. But mentally stuck fans doing mental gymnastics why something is not part of any of those game and shouldn't be, don't improve the experience for players that find the games lacking.

Nothing wrong with playing all of them and finding that features present in one of the games would improve your experience with others, that don't have them.

Edit: Suggesting somebody just plays "the other game" is rather insulting to people's intelligence as well. People are rarely that stupid. If somebody comes into a game's forum and suggests the respective game might benefit from a certain feature another game has, telling them to just go play the other game is argumentatively the equivalent of lazily giving them the middle finger. Without bothering to engage their arguments. Chances are, they know exactly why they would like to play the respective game with that feature, instead of just playing any other game the forum defense force tells them to play.

Yes people really are that stupid, and that includes me as well. People don't know what they want. They think they know, but actually, they don't. The grass is always greener on the other side, and people have and will ruin a studio's development of a game simply because they want "stuff and things" that the developers weren't going to put in.

Have you ever tried managing a project? Have you ever had a clear idea and vision for a project? Have you ever had a clear idea and vision for a project and then tried to ask others to help you? What always happens is that the ones you wanted to help you insist on changing things to what they want. EVERY. DAMN. TIME. And that is what us players do to game developers. I'm honest enough to know this and willing to let the developers make the game THEY want to make and be happy with what ever it is. Anyone (and I do mean ANYONE) who tries to change what the developers want, is trying to ruin the game, whether intentionally or not.

So I stand by what I said.

You arent wrong here if someone thinks a bit about it.
I like ED for its flight model and trying to give you a better feel of how big the galaxy is.
I like X-Series for its singleplayer empire building with spaceships and the entire sandbox feel to it.
I like SC because it makes me laugh.

X4 is certainly worth a look.
To begin with I hope Star Citizen to become X3 with Multiplayer.
So X4 being called SC Singleplayer is pretty strange xD

I also loved the Ship Combat in X3.
It was much more Diverse and much more Fast Paced.

The Flight Model was pretty much Flight Assist on 10%
You would fly mostly like with flight assist off. But at much higher Speeds and without losing Control due to Shot not stopping to turn unless you fine correct it manually..
That made for awesome exchanges.

And the Weapons were much more Diverse.
Weapons were very different in Rate of Fire, Range, Damage and Projectile Speed.
Having different Mounts on the Ship giving an vast set of Options for Ships.

I would love if ED would take some hints there ^^.

I'm also curious Egosoft mentioned on their website that X4 is an online game ... is there something they haven't announced?

Agree combat is more fast paced and fluid in X4 compared to E:D. The weapons are also more versatile - e.g., turreted plasma guns and tail turret guns can also be configured to shoot incoming missiles :)

Where did you find that? If it had a online part you could bet that Egosoft would made that a headline feature considering how long people are asking for something like that. I dont see that anywhere.

Scroll down to News dated 25 Aug 2017 - https://www.egosoft.com/games/x4/info_en.php.

You misunderstand their wording as far as I see. They seem to be referring to the reveal of X4 that they streamed online the next day.

We are getting closer to XCON and our plans on how to reveal X4 online are also getting more concrete. It looks like we will have quite a few visitors in our small office. That's great and we think we are prepared for the masses; everybody should be able to play at least 10 minutes of any VR version they would like to test (Oculus, Vive, with VR controller, gamepad or with HOTAS and VR combined).

the sentiment is good... the problem is, all those of us here around the start SAW the game FD said they wanted to make... its in the DDF and Dev Diaries. Now.... ED launched as a minimum viable product with a view to padding out over time, and most didnt expect the DDf right away... the biggest issue is not "whining players asking for what was never intended imo.... it is we no longer know how much of that intended game..., or if any of the DDF FD have any plans to bother to put in, or if the whole game has been cut in scope.

obvious example.... Wings came out in.... 1.2 which was march 2015.

this was almost 30 months ago..... ie nearly 2.5 years and in that time there has not been a squeek of info about the wings that FD presumably WANTED to make.

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...-a-thing-quot-Revised-Wingmen-Elite-Dangerous

but yeah.... IF that is the game FD wanted to make, then... yeah... FD make THAT game

X2 was my favorite too and I even revisited it recently. However the inability to remap keys drove me crazy enough to look out alternative solutions and I found one in the shape of Joy To Key. Using that I can remap the keys now to anything I like and, now that I have, I have to say X2 still looks and plays pretty good considering how old it is. :)
I hope the new game has more in common with X2, especially cockpits as I really missed those from the X3 series, although, with certain mods, you can bring some of them back again in the X3 series too.

I always got myself in trouble going through the gates with capital ships.
