Wow... so my wingmate and I fly all the way out to Maia. Buy a couple corrosion racks, get all set up for our big Alien space adventure.

Fly to one of the wreckage sites, the information for which we had to go out of game to a web browser to find. Used the completely inconvenient coordinates display to find the wreckage site. Drove over stupid rough terrain to pick up a couple of artifacts.

Now, mind you, that was a 2-3 hours of gameplay in and of itself.

So I log in this morning, and use a web browser to figure out where I can get an unknown probe. Fly to a system, orbit an ammonia world for 15 minutes. Got a probe, great. Wingmate jumps online and we regroup in Merope.

Off to HIP 14909... which I was able to locate by going out of game to use a web browser. 9 jumps away. We drop in, use the inconvenient coordinate display to find the thargoid base.

"Wow this is so cool! Especially in VR!"

"Hey we have to get one of these link things in the adjoining rooms. Let's drop our artifact and probe first."

So we do, and go off to one of the adjoining rooms. Drive up to the devices... and the little red beam things come out, but no Link. Is there some trick here? Maybe we need a probe or artefact?

Well, the extra artefact didn't work. So I go back to the main chamber, scan the main device, and jump/maneuver my SRV to pick up the probe. Go back to the side chamber... nope... no Link.

Drop the probe so as not to take too much corrosion damage.

Maybe I should relog? I'll go into solo and get these things to respawn?

Well, LUCKY ME! When I do so I respawn 2km outside the base, and have to traverse incredibly rough terrain to get back. Only (and here's the kicker :D) I can't get inside because I have no unkown artifact! Isn't that AMAZING!

So I relog into group, only to be respawned 2km away again, and have my wingmate meet me at the entrance with the an artifact! He gets called away, I go inside with the artifact, only there's no point because we're in the same instance that we were originally in! I'm corroding fast, and I've dropped the artefact. I think... well, I could try the solo thing... because I'm desperate now and not thinking straight. Keep in mind that a slight 3 hours of my Saturday has gone by already.

So, of course, I relog into solo, only to be 2km away with no artefact or probe, and I can't get inside the base!

So the cool thing is, me and my wingmate get to do the whole thing ALL OVER AGAIN, and hope that the link spawns when we do!

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a wild roller-coaster ride of fun and excitement.

Hell of a job, FD. You really know how to make a video game.

P.S. After going back and orbiting the ammonia world for another four hours, I finally got another UP. Wingmate has UAs and a UL. Unfortunately I'm in no mood to go do this thing after orbiting a planet for four hours. Hopefully when we check this thing out later it will be worth it, though I doubt anything they present me with at this point will have been.

And I highly encourage FD to read through this thread. Despite my frustrated whining, there are a lot of good, rational points made by both the hardcore scientists and the casually curious alike.

Some of what you say about out of game resources is of course true... but then if you are just looking for the walk through guide.

You could always pretend you haven't peeked at your presents and scan the Listening Post Maia, that will send you on a trail of bread crumbs, listening to audio logs and scanning data points, which will result in some quite tough combat engagements so it is good that you are in a wing... and ultimately you will find the location and cords of an Alien site through your own efforts.

It is gameplay and discovery all in game and at least doing that bit yourself will give you more satisfaction than just following the play through guide.

Oh, man, that sounds awesome! You mean I could have totally decided to check out some random listening post in the hopes that it gives me some breadcrumb of information that would then lead me to some other info that maybe I might have some clue of what it's all about and then go through all of this nonsense.

Man, you're right. That sounds whiz, yo.

Damn OP I just went and watched it on youtube solely to avoid all of that ing around. You know you could've just done that, right?

Hell, why not? I was already in the web browser looking for system names and coordinates.

Right. So you dont want to figure it out yourself, you missed it when the rumours floated around in-game on galnet, you dont want to hear it out of game from others who did figure it out. Okay, thanks for sharing I guess? :p

The best part is orbiting around this ammonia world looking for another UP.

I've almost peed a couple of times, it's so exciting.

Lol, fair point. But you do realize that the gameplay was the breadcrumb, deciphering and 'canonning about' of the thing? You are basically just doing a re-run of what happened, minus the interesting stuff.

Yeah, that's exactly what it is. It's not that a broken game mechanic has resulted in a waste of my time, it's just that I'm stubborn. Funny.

The funniest part is when 3.0 drops and I've decided to spend my money on some other game that delivers consistent entertainment value.

And, just out of curiosity, how would I have known to scan this "Listening Post Maia"?

But hey, it doesn't matter. Out of VR and back to dual screen, where I can watch youtube videos and drink coffee while I wait for this USS to spawn. I mean, it has only been 30 extra minutes of loitering around a planet so far with nothing to do, so what am I complaining about?

Yup, this basically sums it up.... XD

I wish I could ask David Braben if this is how he intended for his game to turn out. If he considers this good gameplay and a success then I highly question the proposition that he is a genius.

I'll ask him as soon as I'm done orbiting this ammonia world. It's only been about 90 minutes now, so should be anytime...

Seem to be an awful lot of people who think that leaving things around and logging off will keep them in game. Not many games do that, surprised everyone keeps doin' it... most POI don't survive a relog, never mind cargo ;) Bet you all lose your keys all the time in real life, as they disappear too!

Cool story Vin, I feel your pain. Landing on planetary POI is my least favourite thing in game. There is a thread here which needs some official commentary. Feel free to add your weight to it. (Not saying your fat or nothing, but you know the more mass we have, the more likely we can coax someone out of the shadows to say Ok or NO!!)

As for the Aliens stuff I figured a while back that it wasnt inclusive enough for my tastes. Seems I was correct.
