Wow... so my wingmate and I fly all the way out to Maia. Buy a couple corrosion racks, get all set up for our big Alien space adventure.
Fly to one of the wreckage sites, the information for which we had to go out of game to a web browser to find. Used the completely inconvenient coordinates display to find the wreckage site. Drove over stupid rough terrain to pick up a couple of artifacts.
Now, mind you, that was a 2-3 hours of gameplay in and of itself.
So I log in this morning, and use a web browser to figure out where I can get an unknown probe. Fly to a system, orbit an ammonia world for 15 minutes. Got a probe, great. Wingmate jumps online and we regroup in Merope.
Off to HIP 14909... which I was able to locate by going out of game to use a web browser. 9 jumps away. We drop in, use the inconvenient coordinate display to find the thargoid base.
"Wow this is so cool! Especially in VR!"
"Hey we have to get one of these link things in the adjoining rooms. Let's drop our artifact and probe first."
So we do, and go off to one of the adjoining rooms. Drive up to the devices... and the little red beam things come out, but no Link. Is there some trick here? Maybe we need a probe or artefact?
Well, the extra artefact didn't work. So I go back to the main chamber, scan the main device, and jump/maneuver my SRV to pick up the probe. Go back to the side chamber... nope... no Link.
Drop the probe so as not to take too much corrosion damage.
Maybe I should relog? I'll go into solo and get these things to respawn?
Well, LUCKY ME! When I do so I respawn 2km outside the base, and have to traverse incredibly rough terrain to get back. Only (and here's the kicker
) I can't get inside because I have no unkown artifact! Isn't that AMAZING!
So I relog into group, only to be respawned 2km away again, and have my wingmate meet me at the entrance with the an artifact! He gets called away, I go inside with the artifact, only there's no point because we're in the same instance that we were originally in! I'm corroding fast, and I've dropped the artefact. I think... well, I could try the solo thing... because I'm desperate now and not thinking straight. Keep in mind that a slight 3 hours of my Saturday has gone by already.
So, of course, I relog into solo, only to be 2km away with no artefact or probe, and I can't get inside the base!
So the cool thing is, me and my wingmate get to do the whole thing ALL OVER AGAIN, and hope that the link spawns when we do!
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a wild roller-coaster ride of fun and excitement.
Hell of a job, FD. You really know how to make a video game.
P.S. After going back and orbiting the ammonia world for another four hours, I finally got another UP. Wingmate has UAs and a UL. Unfortunately I'm in no mood to go do this thing after orbiting a planet for four hours. Hopefully when we check this thing out later it will be worth it, though I doubt anything they present me with at this point will have been.
And I highly encourage FD to read through this thread. Despite my frustrated whining, there are a lot of good, rational points made by both the hardcore scientists and the casually curious alike.
